Battalion Wars IGN review

Wow, I thought this was contending for at best 'sleeper hit' status, it might be even better than that and rack up a few sales.. :)

This will prolly be like MP where it gets good reviews and I hate it anyway.

Why do you think that? Because it was taken from its original developer and thrust unto an untested and probably crappy development team? OH WAIT A MINUTE.

At least they renamed it to something else. But still NINTENDO LEAVE INTSYS/R&D1 FRANCHISES ALONE, KTHXBYE.

Now I think calling Retro a crappy development team is going a bit far. I do however wish that Nintendo would hurry up and give us a real Metroid game on a home console already.

Anyway, I have my copy reserved. No multiplayer mode is somewhat dissapointing but that's no problem. The game looks fun as hell. Only one week left.

Interesting to see what other sites give it. Anomolous review, or indicative of a surprisingly quality game?

Wow, what the hell? A LOT better than I expected. I'm still going to rent it first, but wow, must've come a long way.

I was muttering 7.5 under my breath as I clicked the link for my prediction so I was pretty surprised. I thought the game was pretty fun when I tried it but I only played for like 5 minutes at PAX.

8.0 Graphics
A point of debate for us. However, despite the game's low-resolution textures, it delivers big worlds with lots of units on-screen, huge explosions and little extras like grass, all at 30 frames.

uh-oh.

That was aimed at us!

It sounds like fun, but I think I'll hold off and get it later. I've already got a backlog of GC and GBA games that I should play first. But since there's not much on the horizon for the GC, I'll probably pick this up down the road. The only thing that bummed me out was
There's no way to lock an individual unit into a order so that further commands ignore the unit, so far as we can tell. As a result, if players individually direct their flamethrowers to attack some enemy bazooka veterans and then use the star command to direct the rest of the squad, the flamethrowers will abandon their previous order and join the rest of the party. The only way around this is to continue micromanaging units, which can be tedious and difficult during frantic battle situations.
and
The other issue, slightly related, is that there are certainly points when time is not on our side -- where we really could use an extra second or two to command units without worrying about advancing forces. It would have been very useful if Kuju had implemented a feature so that time either slowed or paused when gamers accessed the command icon bar.
That's why I prefer turn based strategy games since you have more time to figure out your next move (I haven't really tried any real-time strategy games). But all-in-all Battalion Wars sounds like fun. Congrats to Kuju :)

If this is good, there had better be an online sequel.

That's my hope. It's looked great from the beginning--a nice, natural spinoff, but it really does need online support.

So basically Nintendo pulled a Retro with the Kuju team and then there is Geist. I think its obvious that eventually Geist was considered nothing more than a IP to fill in some gaps in the release schedule by Nintendo. They need to start givin a damn about the quality of these outsourced IP's and published games like they did with BW. I decided that I'll buy this at launch after reading that review despite not having even a fucking 2 player co-op mode. I can see this as a long standing series on Nintendo systems so maybe for the sequel.

WHICH ONE OF YOU REVIEWED IT IN GAME INFORMER?

Below the title, "Nintendo Am Cry"

Score: 5.5
Second opinion: 6.25

Other scores:

We Love Katamari: 8.5
Radiata Stories: 9.25
Shadow of the Colossus: 8.75

Very disappointing, only 3 pages long. I love me a nice 8-page IGN review that resembles an answer from "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"

I'll post this is every Battalion Wars thread, because it's a bullshit omission:

No multiplayer=no buy.

I'm surprised it did that well. I wonder if the 16x9 mode helped the score out much. Matt always comes across as caring more about framerate, display modes and sound options/quality than whether or not the game is any good.

I'll buy it, this game was awesome at E3 ---- really fun stuff, i can't even put my finger on why it was so fun.... it just was.
