Battlefield 2 had me at hello.

My specs running the demo at lowest settings

2.0 GHZ
1 GB ram
Nvidia GeForce 5700 Ultra

I tested running the game at highest settings in single player, too choppy for me.
I guess I'll try to change around some low settings to medium and see whats up. Also buying this game.

Yep, I have similar specs (slightly faster cpu, less ram, same videocard), and it runs well on the lowest settings (doesn't look much better than the original but still :lol ), but if I push it onto high it starts getting very choppy. The gameplay's still there though but...I was hoping it would run better due to how great HL2/CS:S looks on my computer (yeah yeah, way smaller map and less on screen but still), but no dice...

Not sure how it compares but I've got a 2.0 GHz machine, with 768 MB of RAM (Yeah I know weird number), and a 9700 Pro and I run BF2 on medium settings with 80% distance and I get very nice framerates.

Fixed it finally.

EA put up a no time/all weapons server but a clan named HHx has taken it over and vote kicks non-clan members off.

Several servers have done it. Just look for the ones that say "12" or something other than 10 on the time limit. I went into some that said "12" but were actually unlimited time. It's so much more fun without a time limit. :D

what's glitchy about it?

good question.

the only problems ive had are problems locking up when im in tha damn server list and switching back and forth to xfire while loading sometimes seemed to have a wierd effect. (xfire set us up for IP search on friends finally!)

other then that, i dont see any problems.

having a blast, but i over did it yesterday on the demo. played for a few hrs too long.

im buying the game on release even if i have to sell some crap.

I find it odd that with 1GB of RAM, and the memory footprint of BF2.exe not taking up that much, the game hits the hard drive pretty hard in the first couple of minutes of loading the map and entering the game. This results in some pretty bad framerate dropouts. It's either paging out to the swap file, or it's still loading stuff into memory from the hard drive. Either way, it's pretty freaking annoying.

Command Mode is amazing. I played 6 matches tonight as the commander, only lost one. I just found a nice quiet place on the map and camped on the commander screen. I had some good people under me tho. Both squad leaders were extremely responsive and listened to my warnings and commands and sent requests and updates frequently.

Awesome experience.

Awesome thread for an awesome game which can easily be classified as an "Awesome experience."

This shit is white hot, count me in on the GAF clan/squad/tea party.

Good commanders are awesome, but once in a while you get some idiot doing nothing. I try to vote those guys off, but no one communicates beyond the in game commands. Played a few games today. Mostly great games with everyone carrying out orders to the T. When everyone is doing their part and playing their role, the game feels like a war movie. I can't fucking wait for full release.

I am not sure if it's a glitch or framerate issue, but I'd randomly end up suddenly facing the exact opposite direction I was trying to face or was facing.

I was against getting it, I wasn't going to touch another BF piece of shit after the crap they distrubted as BF vietnam.

Though I buckled and downloaded the demo. I have to say, pretty much all the shit that pissed me off about BF is now....gone. Looking like I might have to buy it.

You've got to be kidding me...

That is your connection. If it only happens for less than a second, you won't get the connection message. I haven't seen any real glitches.

You can be a suicide bomber in BF2 if you want.

Select the special ops class, plant C4s on a buggy/(whatever the Mec counterpart is named) plant your charges on the car, select the detonator so you have it in your hand when you enter the vehicle. Drive up to a enemy tank or a gathering of enemy soldiers, jump out in the last minute and detonate. :D

i was wondering wtf that guy was doing yesterday when i saw a teammate driving a buggy absolutely covered in C4. it didnt register at the time.

makes sense now. :lol

Sitting here at work thinking of stuff to do in BF2. I HAVE to try out the C4-Jeep attack. I was perfecting my heli landing skills, by landing on the MEC's gigantic Oil reservoir (next to the heli and planes. If I can angle the heli right, I can get the guns pointed in the right way to open up a barrage on said planes and heli's.

Seemed pointless to give it its own thread, so enjoy. To be on topic, can't wait to give the demo a bash when I get back to my gaming PC in about two weeks.

Looks like it's planted on this air to me. Or he's in the middle of a really stiff, crappy running animation.

Either way, it just reminded me of the days when Morphix used to carpetbomb BF1942 threads with pictures of the game's many glitches and bugs.

One foot is on the ground...the other is up in the air. Its a walking animation. What exactly...is the problem?

Unless you are a cartoon character that is trying to sneak up on someone, you don't raise your leg that high and bend your knee to a 90 degree angle when walking. The shot just looked kind of funny like he was planeted in position (like an plastic army man or something).

I might just pass on BF2. I can just imagine myself yelling too loud and my son sleeps right above where the computers are.

I have to be quiet or play console games in the basement where I can be as loud as I want.

DAMN STRAIGHT

http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_1.html

That should help some of you struggling with the demo. The first page is pretty basic so for those of you well versed with game tinkering skip straight to the second.

Increasing Singleplayer Bots

To increase the number of bots used in singleplayer mode, go to your \Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\AI directory and open the file aidefault.ai with Notepad or Wordpad. Read the instructions in the file, and remove the words 'rem' from in front of the relevant lines. To alter the number of actual bots, edit the number at the end of the aiSettings.setMaxNBots 32 line (e.g. aiSettings.setMaxNBots 64 for 64 bots). Note that more bots can really stress your system and hence destabilize it.

Heh, saw this and got all hopeful, then barely into the first page...

Using Old Hardware: Unfortunately there are no ways I know of to make BF2 run on older hardware if it does not meet the game's minimum requirements.

Bah.

What is the Left Alt key hardcoded to anyways? I just disabled it so I can use it as my microphone key.

Anyways, here's how to change the singleplayer map settings to allow a 32 player map:

Hack to get bots working in 32-player map instead of 16

First off, I'm not responsible for anything that happens as a result of you trying this hack out. If it doesn't work and it buggers up your install, you're **** out of luck.

So, I got it working... but...

The bots are a bit messed up because the 16-player map control points are different to those in the 32-player map, so I had to 'improvise' with regards to bot spawn locations. Basically it doesn't work very well, but for the most part, it DOES work.

Here's what you gotta do:

1) Go to your /mods/bf2/levels/gulf_of_oman folder inside your demo folder
2) Unzip the server.zip file in that directory into that location, retaining directory structure
3) rename the server.zip to something like serverbackup.zip
4) Go to the new /gamemodes/sp1/ directory that will have been created and rename the '16' directory to '32'
5) Go back out and then through to /gamemodes/gpm_cq/32 and copy the GamePlayObjects.con file from that dir into that new /gamemodes/sp1/32 directory. If done correctly it should ask to overwrite, click yes.
6) Replace the strategicareas.ai file in /gamemodes/sp1/32/ai with the one in the zip that is attached to this message

This could be working a lot better, and I can only hope that someone smarter than me gets the idea behind what I've done and improves on it. That's why I've posted this, even though it doesn't work well, it's a start :D

By the way, if you have any probs, remove everything that should have been created when you unzipped that server.zip, rename that file back to server.zip, and it should be working as it was originally. If all else fails, simply uninstall, then reinstall... but hopefully it won't come to that :D

I've only played BF1942 on one occasion before, so I'm relatively new to the Battlefield experience.

First impressions? The teamplay in BF2 is incredible, but only if you're paired with teamplayers. I had some bad experiences where people would race to a plane, and then the person who didn't reach it in time would throw mines onto the plane as the guy took off. Fucking sore losers.

On the other hand, I had an awesome experience with a fantastic pilot, he took us on a bombing run, we took out a few establishments, went over to the enemy spawn, got shot at by missiles, bailed, landed in the rough behind enemy spawn and took out a few baddies before we got mowed down by a patrolling tank. Fun fun fun!

I hate it when I tell my Squad members to get in and they just run around like morons. Theres only been a few times when Im Squad leader and my MEC team wins. (harder to win with MEC thant USMC in demo)
Let me know what room you guys play in so I can join up and maybe create a GAF Squad.
Im always a Medic or on Assault. Just love reviving team members.

I've been playing with SA Goons mostly, and people have been making use of naming teams. Like HOTEL (team focuses on capturing/defending the hotel), Snipers, Air Support, and everyone's favorite TEAMWORK.

The spec ops gun in single-shot mode is awesome.

I've had a couple good experiences playing bf2, but otherwise they've been okay to bad. It suffers from PC gaming's most annoying problems, bitchy engines, dumb players and uninitutive interface. I try to go along with commands, but the map in the game is a total clusterfuck. I'll hear a call for ammunition, and I normally play support, but I don't know where it's coming from because the map is madness. Plus, two crappily lagging servers. =/

And I've never played the first Battlefield and I'm still doing better than people. I don't know if it's dumb lack or what. My commander asked for a gunner on a helicopter run, so I jumped in and tried that out for the first time. Then we got missiled down and bailed out of the helicopter and parachuted into the sea. I swam all the way back to the US controlled beach, took a base and used the anti-aicraft missiles to take out two helicopters. Now that was fun. As was defending an outpost versus constant air raids with a tank for like half an hour. I kept dancing around their bomb runs in my tank and gunning for the helicopters and taking out their ground vehicles. Then today I play and everything is a mess.

Hehe, yup. Just the nature of the beast playing on public servers. Like a public pool, chances are someones gonna take a piss sooner or later. I had to play with a jackass who got his jollies off taking the jet and flying into whatever friendly heli was hovering in his vicinity. Im sure he was having a blast.

Then again the round after that was awesome. Our 6 man squad was opposing their 6 man squad on the beach by the artillery. Just a total back and forth shootout. They'd have their Special Ops guys blow the arty to bits, we'd fight back for position and have our mechanics repair it, rinse repeat for the whole round back and forth until our last arty blast sealed the deal. This game is incredible when there's even just a little cohesion going on.

One thing they do gotta fix is the distance when you can tell if you're looking at a friendly or not, especially vehicles. Makes you a little too hesitent for my liking, and I get TK'd all the time.

I have never had a problem with idiots in games or whatever. Maybe TKers, but I usually just fuck around and my goal is FUN instead of winning so I don't fret about losing a round.

God, this game, when Teamwork exists, is beyond awesome. Through in 2 squads semi "concious" against probably an entire Clan running at full precision....I swear, I think I was just in actual combat.

Fuck, BF2 is awesome. HOWEVER, infantry combat is a little weird, it's like, when you shoot someone it doesn't really feel like you're hitting then. It's better than 'Nam's and '42's, but 'Nam's definitely feels better. And I hate how they gave most of the support classes those shitty automatic guns, give me an m14 or a Garand any day of the week please.

I like how the helicopters were handled, should be owning it up with them in no time, but won't be invincible like I am in one of 'Nam's Hueys or Cobras. :lol Turning with the arrow keys feels really stiff and awkward though.

Jets are a little rude, do they even have a radar? I've never really been big on non-helicopter flight outside of '42 anyway though, so I don't really know or care. That map feels a bit too small for the jets, too.

Ground vehicles are AWESOME. They just feel right, and are better balanced than they have ever been before, totally awesome.

Only got to play for a while though, I'll give it another go after my exam on friday..

EDIT: I realised I didn't say awesome enough. Totally awesome.

This game is stunning, I've been playing it every evening since the demo came out. And thats the amazing thing - this is just a one map demo. The full game is going to be spectacular. Well done DICE, this game wasn't even on my radar 5 days ago... now I'm gonna get it and any 'milking it' expansions EA can conceive of. Bye bye Counterstrike: Source, your reign is over.

Squads rock. I ussualy join one. I'll learn commanding once i get the game right now i just follow orders or do my own thing if there's chaos.

Quite true. I just joined a CS:S clan 2 weeks ago now CS feels more like work than fun. Some people take it too seriously that the fun goes.
