Bayonetta out on Steam (4K, dual audio), $19.99, PC launch trailer, dev diary

Ok I just ended up buying an iPad mostly for the Bayonetta guide (and nice to finally own an iOS device for some exclusive stuff). Holy hell is it meaty. Almost done with my Platinum run of Normal as well. Might do the speedrun before moving on to hard, not sure yet. What a game.

Weird question. To my knowledge my TV is 1080p. I've got my PC hooked up to the TV via HDMI and when Bayonetta booted up the overlay of the TV popped up saying it was 2160p.

What the hell happened?

Edit: My PS4 Pro doesn't recognise my TV as anything more than 1080p.

do you have DSR enabled? The game seems to run at the highest res you have available, and if you have DSR enabled it means 4k res and such

edit: beaten

Someone needs to make a turbo button mod for these parts, it's ridiculous. It's more annoying in the final
Jeanne
boss fight when you have to counter.

I was thinking the same...I thought maybe it was just that my PC gamepad has worse build quality than a normal 360 controller, so the buttons might not be as springy.

I always found the QTEs really demanding tbh, even on the 360. I used to do the thumb slide technique to do them, which would give me callouses but felt so satisfying (there's no cap on most of the QTEs, so you can potentially go way past the "max"). It does seem harder on the PC, but, again, maybe my controller just sucks.

I just used the Steam settings for the controller to add turbo. I was using a DualShock 4 but it works with the xbox controllers as well. That thing is a godsend for button mashing QTEs,

Breh, it's Steam. You can turn on Xbox or PS4 configuration in BPM so your 360/Xbone/PS4 controller can be rebound to whatever you want. I personally have the following changes:

- LT and RB swapped, so LT is lock on, just like Bayo 2
- Added a modifier button (labeled as "mode shifting") for the button pad, activated with Back, and changed all the face buttons to turbo in their individual settings (hit Back when in the button settings for "manage activators")

Whenever a mash QTE comes up, I just hold Back+X/Y/B and enjoy my max halo bonus.

This! Only I've used taunt instead of back as the modifier.

Bayonetta is now ~100,000 on SteamSpy as of yesterday

The actual numbers (94,145 +/- 8,657)
http://steamspy.com/app/460790

Not too shabby.. though I suspect it will level off fairly soon.

Those numbers are actually pretty darn good.

Following MGR, this strong debut week for Bayonetta clearly demonstrates that there is demand for their single player "character-action" games on the PC platform. Just think... if only they had announced the game at least a month in advance, instead of pulling the April Fools campaign (which was met with a degree of noteworthy skepticism). In the end, I am sure SEGA is going to be pleased, regardless.

Judging by the way Valkyria Chronicles did as a role-playing adventure, SEGA should also take a hard look at Resonance of Fate (End of Eternity) next. I already own the game, so there's no agenda here. I truly believe RoF has a very, very good chance at surprising them on PC, sales-wise.

Will they add in DLC to put in a story into the game?
hehehe

I LOOOOVED the gameplay and RoF and would probably buy it again at a good price for Steam.

That feeling when you actually learn the mechanics and use them properly, and suddenly bosses and bigger enemies that once gave you a hard time turn into punching bags -- it's so satisfying. :D

I finished the game once when I was at my friends. It was the PS3 version and I had two days to finish the game (the friend had the game installed, but never played it), so I rushed through it without trying different weapons (I don't remember even having the whip), artifacts or learning techniques and mechanics. And that was clearly a wrong way to play the game. I've just finished level XI which was a semi-boss rush -- I remember dying a lot when I played the game previously. Now? The only problem I had were those flying ships -- and it wasn't even fighting them, rather jumping from ship to ship (and getting shot mid-air and then falling down into space v_v).

DSR activated in Nvidia Control Panel?
Bayonetta defaults to the highest possible resolution.
If it was using DSR, the TV would be receiving a 1080p signal and the game would say 3840x2160.
If the TV says 2160p, it's receiving a native 4K signal.
Some 1080p panels can accept a 4K input. Maybe it's not officially supported, but working somehow.

Is there a trick to the counter QTEs against white Jeanne? She keeps hitting me first

Just have to go ham with the mashing. If I remember correctly, you have to get 450 on the first and 500 on the second to not get hit.

Alternatively, if you're feeling cool and have Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa, you can parry her back!

That verse is seriously the most rage-inducing in the game, lol. I ran away from it when I played it the first time.

Pro tip for the boats: Umbran Portal Kick has invincibility for its entire startup, so you can use it to negate the initial wave of missiles that they launch at you.

yeah i hate kinships, i actually don't have problem with them, i can take them out rather quickly but sometimes i just can't make those jumps and then i misdodge and there goes my hp...

one enemy i really hate is fairness

Bought my copy today for almost $10 bucks in Nuuvem website. Great deal for anyone in South America!

I just finished the first chapter and the game is really great so far! I only had a weird bug with no sound after use Alt+Tab. All sound options were messed up and strangely reset to zero, but the "reset to default" option fixed it easily.

Is very pleasant to see the great job that platinum games did with this port

Ah. That means unless Platinum Games buys the IP back from Nintendo - which they won't - the game will never see the light of day on the PC, and we can all forget about a 4K version of the game.

They can't really "buy it back". It was Nintendo's IP to begin with that they collaborated with Platinum Games to produce. Or more like Platinum Games wanted to develop a game for Wii U and Nintendo helped them out with that.

It's like how Sin & Punishment belongs to Nintendo, but they need to have Treasure involved to make a new game.

Your only hope is Nintendo/Platinum porting the game to Switch and somehow playing it back in 4k via backwards compatibility on a future add-on/console. Other than that, there's CEMU...

*Ahem* Speaking of witch, did they fix the AA yet? And what about AMD cards who have no NVidia inspector? Why does everyone on GAF assume everybody has an Nvidia card?

OH MY GOD THANK YOU. The lock on button being on top of the dodge trigger is pretty stupid, and I really don´t want to learn how to use my middle finger on the trigger, but I just like the stinger/launcher move with the katana way too much.

Bayonetta also had 8 years to build a reputation for being a masterpiece in the genre, which probably helps as well. I really like this concept of a Steam release giving a game a second chance in the market.

done! gonna keep it installed tho for when I'm bored

I wish the game didn't take away control to put the camera inside the asshole of the main char every sixty seconds. Thought these constant interruptions would be specific to MGR but they are almost as bad here. With the interactive load screens made instant you barely get a chance to play the game during the first hours. :<

That verse and the one where you are on the freeway are the cheesiest parts of the game, IMO. That's where Bayo 2 really improved. It didn't have the frustrating encounter design.

Right trigger + select button instantly skips cutscenes. I know it might feel wrong to do it on a first playthrough, but trust me, it's oh so right.

Well yes that's good and how it should be played but it's still bad design. DMC does it as well of course. Just baffling that these games haven't moved past their RE roots for menus, cut-scenes and interactions. It's as infuriating as it'd be if Quake interrupted you mid jump to show a door opening after pushing a button. I know that once I've gone through the game a couple times it'll be less of an issue, but it's still a pretty huge issue. It feels much worse when you've been away from the genre a while.

Anyway the game itself is of course super fun when it lets you play and I can already see the huge potential after getting just two additional weapons.

Bad design? Not so sure about that one. Most cutscenes have a purpose - to introduce an enemy, to advance the story, to be entertaining (I'm not really a fan of the interactive cutscenes except when they're the enemy finishers). It is a bit annoying as someone whose played through the game multiple times but honestly its not that bad, especially since you seem to be in the early chapters where the game is establishing everything through cutscenes and it takes a while.

I'm guessing that you've never tried to Pure Platinum the Lumen Sage without the Bracelet of Time.

I went back to DMC4 (which I went through more times than I can count) to see how that game actually was and indeed Bayonetta seems to get going a lot quicker. However I don't feel that the purpose of the cut scenes is important enough to warrant their existence, especially since all these games have always been about replayability. When the essence of gameplay is fast and fluid combat made for multiple playthroughs these constant interruptions clash very harshly, even in DMC4 I just skipped everything after a certain point.

If someone would remake Bayonetta (or DMC4, so my experience counts for something) and have a mode with instant cuts rather than a slight pause with manual input I feel that even the first playthrough could be improved. It'd be no question that repeated playthroughs would be improved. Now if someone would design a game in this style that just flows from start to finish that would be ideal, a story should be secondary if that, they've never been worthwhile IMO.

I'm not the only one who thinks the
motorcycle
segment is abysmal, right?

I fell through the floor just driving around multiple times.

Man I am so glad we've moved away from arena style stylish action level design. Feels a bit rough here even though the combat itself is great.

I can't agree. I don't think there are any pure action games of this quality that don't use that style of design.

Sorry, any tips on actually completing it?

I primarily fought him with Shuraba on my hands and fire Durga on my feet, with my main method of attack being the PKP combo (holding K almost every time to get the fire bomb out). Pulley's Butterfly and the Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa are the safest accessories to use, probably.

The safest ways to beat him probably involve some combination of Pillow Talk and the Climax Brace (which you're allowed to take into the fight for some reason), but I kind of prefer not to use those.

The first (and I believe only) time I beat it, I put Shuraba on my hands and just went fucking ham with a Panther Offset and PKP. It was what finally made me get good at Panther Offset, and now I use it all the time. I also used Pulley's Butterfly, since there's not much else to spend your magic on.

yeah only tips are using moon of mahaa-kalaa and pulley's butterfly and just fight like you normally do, he gets more and more aggressive so probably you're going to be forced to wicked weave the dude from a distance towards the end (it's kind of cheap but hey...), the back+forward kick is a quick way to spam if you have magic to spare

Thanks. I hope I can finally beat it on this platform, lol.

No AA fix yet, I assume Sega Europe knows about it, apparently there's been some Steam database movement so a patch should be happening at some point. I wish they'd communicate on that. They have social media so people can talk to them there I guess.

I hope things are fixed soon for AMD users out there.
