After hearing so much about this game over the years I'm really disappointed with it, the gameplay does seem like something I would like to sink my teeth into but the overall presentation is a complete put off. The cutscenes and acting are so cheesy and over the top,not to mention how pervy it is, I just felt awkward playing it.
Yeah, the overall presentation and story is a bit... something. If you keep playing, you will probably eventually embrace it, but I understand how off putting it can be. Remember, you can always skip cut-scenes by pressing RT + back.

I know exacty how you feel. I didn't want to give the game a chance when it was announced because of how dumb the hair-as-clothes concept was, but the GAF demo thread really sold me on the gameplay (dodge offset is probably my favorite mechanic of any game ever).
Over time, I learned to tolerate the cheesiness of the game, and it is still my favorite game nowadays. If you really can't stand the cutscenes, skip them all! I didn't find they added anything to my enjoyment of the game. The gameplay is just worth it.
I thought the QTEs were harder than I remembered, but I'm fairly certain that they're the same and I was just out of practice. If I mash normally, I can reach the max bonus, and if I turn my thumb sideways and start sliding it over my controller then I can get ~50% over the max bonus, which are around the same numbers I was getting on the 360.
For the Jeanne QTEs (which are the only hard QTEs where your mashing affects survival) you can always just dodge away when the counter prompt appears. Alternatively, you can parry her right after you fail it!
You've giving me flashbacks to when I first tried Hard Mode. I had just unlocked the BoT and figured I'd finally give Hard Mode a shot, but I didn't realize that the accessory disabled Witch Time. Needless to say, I got crushed by G&G.
Have you learned Dodge Offset yet? That's what will make or break you on Hard Mode. There's an in-game description in the Tome of Umbran Arts, but the basic way to do it is:
1. Equip Scarborough Faire on both your hands and your feet, go to the load screen, and hit Back to enter Practice Mode.
2. Hold Punch, then Hold Kick, then Hold Punch again. Each press of the button should cause Bayonetta to do a punch and shoot bullets for a bit. The third hit will produce a powerful Wicked Weave.
3. Now, Hold Punch, then hit Dodge while still holding Punch. As Bayonetta exits her Dodge, hit Kick, then hit Punch. Did she produce a Wicked Weave on the last punch? If so, you just did Dodge Offset. Congrats!
4. You can do Dodge Offset as many times as you want (up to the Dodge limit) and with any combo that you want. Practice with longer combos and with more Dodges in the middle! For instance:
Hold Punch[Dodge][Dodge] -> Punch -> Hold Kick[Dodge][Dodge][Dodge] -> Hold Kick, let the Wicked Weave go off[Dodge] -> Final Kick (and a second Wicked Weave)
You can do Dodge Offset with ANY weapon [except Angel weapons], but practicing is easiest with Scarborough Faire.
Other tip for G&G specifically: they're vulnerable to the tripping combo (PPPKKK) and are much less threatening in the air than they are on the ground. If you can launch them (say, with PPKP), follow them into the air for some easy hits!

On the note of the cutscenes, I don't blame anyone for being made uneasy by Bayonetta's sexiness. The worst naughty camera angles are probably in the opening cutscene and the angel fight in Chapter 6. If it was one of those two cutscenes that was bothering you, just know that it isn't normally that overt.
Bayonetta's cutscenes definitely made me a little uneasy when I first played, but I've since come to really appreciate them. The script and voice acting are far better than they have any right to be. The chemistry between the primary characters is consistently fantastic. Bayonetta delivers iconic and campy lines (though I understand that that type of humor is an acquired taste). I rewatched every single cutscene on my PC playthrough, lol.
Bayo1's plot pacing is definitely...unconventional. But I think that Kamiya et. al knew what they were doing. (Story structure spoilers)
For the first 3/4 of the game, the plot is almost non-existent. Bayonetta's objective is super generic (find the gemstone to cure your amnesia!) and the plot never really progresses beyond that since Bayonetta just kind of wanders all over the place and fucks up angels wherever she happens to find them. Jeanne constantly teases you with red herrings (seriously, every encounter with her suggests she has a different motive) and Bayonetta herself doesn't even seem to care about the plot (when the Cardinal Virtues try to explain things to her, she tends to get bored, adjust her glasses, and then shoot them in the face).
I think that this is very much intentional. Kamiya believed that this type of gratuitous, gameplay-focused action game would work better with cutscenes that emphasize action and character moments. He didn't want plot development and changing motives, because he didn't want to tie the game to a traditional story structure. Instead, it consists of a bunch of character-building vignettes without any strong story arc connecting them.
The plot only really starts in the last quarter of the game, but that portion is packed with awesome character moments that tie back in to random dialogue from earlier cutscenes. That's where the story really starts, and that portion of the game is jam-packed with really cool revelations. Everything before it is just character development foreplay.
If nothing else, I'd highly recommend watching the cutscenes from the start of Chapter 13 to the end. They're devoid of any sexy camera shots, and there are some really cool plot moments nestled in there.
I have to admit that I did feel akward too when I first played it, over time I not only started to don't mind anymore, I actually love it now, the way it presents itself. It is extremely unique in it's presentation and tone among videogames, it's more like a big music video with crazy people and a crazy storyline lot's of dancing and lot's of sexual innuendo and extreme violence and gore. And still, it is not without heart, there are some feels in the story too, despite it's over the top pervy crazyness.
I wish there were more games like this!
I've played Lollipop Chainsaw, nice humor in that one, but it doesn't even come close in everything else.
It is better with a mouse, but it also works on a controller when you stay in the middle/horizontal line of the screen and only go left and right (not up and down) and also always fire when the enemies head is a little above the crosshair and not directly on it then it becomes much easier.

It's fun and over the top done right, and it doesn't take itself seriously at all, it's great in that sense.
Just roll with it or skip it altogether, but you don't play Bayonetta for the story.
Breh, it's Steam. You can turn on Xbox or PS4 configuration in BPM so your 360/Xbone/PS4 controller can be rebound to whatever you want. I personally have the following changes:
- LT and RB swapped, so LT is lock on, just like Bayo 2
- Added a modifier button (labeled as "mode shifting") for the button pad, activated with Back, and changed all the face buttons to turbo in their individual settings (hit Back when in the button settings for "manage activators")
Whenever a mash QTE comes up, I just hold Back+X/Y/B and enjoy my max halo bonus.
Can you export this please? I have been playing around with it but can't seem to get it to work like you do.
So I think I got it working, but the turbo doesn't seem to turbo that fast or it get stuck. I tried it on the default setting and cranked it all the way up but neither one seemed to make a difference. It pressed the buttons during the climaxes and tortures but the button pressing was so slow I could have done it manually and gotten a higher score.
One very important tip: most of the time, as soon as the cut-scene ends (or you skip it) - especially if it's a cut-scene that introduces a new enemy/boss - press the dodge button; just to be safe. The game just loves to attack you the second the gameplay starts without giving you any time to perceive what's going on. The first Kinship battle is the quintessence of this approach - as soon as the cut-scene ends, you are mere miliseconds from getting hit by a couple of rockets (which is really painful, especially on your first playthrough) :/
I got stuck on a level for hours so i turned the difficulty down from Normal to Easy, AND IT'S SO MUCH FUN. I'm not sure what automatic exactly does, but everything is just dying super quick and it's amazing.

Don't forget insta-death QTE out of nowhere (even during boss fights), or situations where you can miss QTE and the boss replenish part of its health (two last bosses). That's bullshit.
When the game works, it's 10/10, but there are so many baffling design decisions.

playing this for the first time. was always curious about it. its pretty rad! feels very much like an SNES action game i would rent one afternoon. Final Fight X Act Raiser?
i like the stylization, how it sort of plays out like a Michael Bay blockbuster. Platinum really has the heart of 80s-era Konami videogame craziness. i like the intro where Bayonetta is shooting the angels and just going "Gun... Gun... Gun..." while someone throws her guns from this giant pile. hilarious stuff.
I have to be honest, re-playing Bayonetta after 50 hours of Nier'ing it up... Having to hold a button to lock-on (and needing to do so to pull off some moves) feels kinda archaic. I think this sort of setup is better left in the dust. In general I'm annoyed that I can't customize my controls however I want in this port.

Bayo has the best soft-lock in the business, so it's fine. It's far, far less reliant on it than DMC, so it's not really a big deal in general. Really, you're only using it for stinger and for launchers.
As for controls, uh, you're playing on the PC version, or at least you're in the thread for it. Steam lets you do absurdly complicated things with pretty much any controller for any game. Check my post history or the last few pages for one of my posts for how to switch lock on around and make a turbo button for the QTEs.
One of the things I really love in this game is all of the small details. There is so much that you will miss in regular gameplay but add a nice bit of personality to the game. Like, if you press the shoot/action button, Bayonetta shoots in the shape of a B followed by a heart. It's nothing major but it just fits the character so much:
Haven't sunk as much time as I'd like into the PC version yet, but I played a few levels and I really missed playing this game. It's so damn fun. I just dread having to unlock everything again... Playing without Panther Within is driving me nuts since I used it for a few shortcuts you can't access without.

Out of curiosity i tried prologue on Hard mode and died immediately on two monsters with claws 😀 Then i tried to replay this level on Normal and can't get past level when you need to execute 3 torture attacks.. Fuck this, i'm done with this game (and i thought that Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma was easy 😀
PS - that's my pitiful stats after playthrough

You can execute a torture attack when your magical bar (or however it's called) is full. You can fill it by either executing Witch Time, Witch Weaver (although I'm not sure on this), parry/block an attack or taunt enemies.

If Capcom ever releases DMC5, I would really love for them to follow DmC route and let you access already discovered Secret Mission from the main menu. It's really frustrating that in order to play a Secret Mission (DMC series) or Alfheim (Bayonetta), you have to reach it during a normal mission.
Probably one of the biggest things I'm hoping for in the future is someone to figure out how to do a fov hack for that reason. All you'd need is an extra 10 degrees or so and most of the problem areas with the camera would go away.
Other than Jeane 1. There's no fixing that shit. Great fight, but I always bait her to the center of the room because otherwise the camera shits the bed completely once you start going up walls and shit.

I really do feel like the button mashing sections are more difficult for some reason. Or maybe it's because I'm using my PS4 controller when I usually played with my X360 controller... but either way, I almost never hit the last tick anymore, when I used to always get it on the X360 and the Wii U.
Enjoying the heck out of this game, even years after its release. I'm so glad they put it on the PC. Gotta get back into the groove is so much fun too, I'm getting silver and gold medals on normal when I used to have it all Pure Plat/Plat. Looks like I'll have to climb my way back up.

I haven't played the full version of NieR, but its demo had a really wide window for witch time (2B time?). Wider than any other Platinum game, and actually wide enough to throw my off my timing overall.
It's true. Playing Nier A so much messed with me a bit. Went back to it for a bit and feels so slow compared to Bayonetta I can't believe it. Then there's other stuff like enemies making it beyond obvious when you have to dodge, whereas in Bayo it might be a bit too difficult to tell sometimes.
Man Bayonetta is still so awesome, I really missed it. Had been some time since I last played it, and the only version I've previously owned was on PS3, so it had its own set of issues. I'll never really fully grasp the game's mechanics but I have enough fun as it is.
I do wish there was a code to unlock everything or at least give me a bunch of money.
I'm trying to get the Wii U exclusive costumes over and no matter what I do it's just not showing up. I've found Link, from the Wii U files, and I've tried replacing the Bayonetta model in the original files but no matter what I do she just looks normal in game.
Guess I'll have to wait for someone with more knowledge than me to release a mod tool.

Very possible. It's a Mikami game. Lots of his games were locked to 30 and tied to game logic (classic Resident Evil on PC) (some of them were fixed via INI etc.).

The prologue dress and Rosa would be amazing as well. But I think they might be using the Bayonetta 1 Wii U version of the costumes, so if there's any prohibitive difference in layout, that'd be an additional issue to deal with.

I guess you haven't been able to do any model swaps purely with Bayonetta 1 files either? That sounds frustrating.

It was really frustrating -_- I stayed up really late trying to do it too. I just need to do a little more experimenting and find out exactly which file is responsible for the gameplay model.
In the Wii U version, the pl (player) folder is extracted from data0.cpk, and in there it has all of the normal costumes you'd expect and then the Nintendo exclusive ones at the end, starting with pl0301. In the PC version meanwhile the pl folder comes from data03.cpk, but when you extract it there are significantly less files compared to the Wii U version, so I'm not sure if there are some other costumes missing.
The issue is that there are a lot of models which look like normal Bayonetta, all just named pl0XXX, but the tool used to view those models doesn't show the textures so it's hard to tell. I basically just have to look for distinguishing features in the mesh and go from there.
On the plus side, I DID find a bunch of UI stuff which would easily be extracted into .DDS, so therefore can be edited. Still no button prompts however.
