Video game makers often talk about creating immersive games where players can lose themselves in virtual worlds.

A company called eMagin believes the answer lies not so much in the games, but in how they are viewed.

It has come up with a 3D visor that uses two micro displays to create a stereo vision of a game.

The headset has a tracking system using gyroscopes that lets players look around a game by moving the head from side to side.

"It is a much more immersive experience than looking at a big screen," said eMagin's Bruce Ridley.

"Most PC games will work with it," he said, adding it would also work on the new Microsoft Xbox 360.

The company is talking to all the major console makers about the headset.

"Nintendo has even purchased some," said Mr Ridley.

The company has been selling the headset via its website since July.
WTF?

C-ya dood!

I think it's an optional type of controller...at least I'd hope so. If it was optional I'd be all for games supporting it.

(19:54:11) (Xren) You don't HAVE to wear it.
(19:54:14) (Xren) And the idea sucks.
(19:54:28) (Xren) But it's kinda weird if some of this ON shit appears to be true.

we are not ready for visors yet, the technology is not at the consumer friendly level yet for a truly virtually immersive experience coupled with an affordable price.

And as a small side note, they haven't found the FUTURE TECHNOLOGY to not make you look like a total fucking doofus while wearing them.

How do you know? Have you seen the Revolution's headset?

Seriously, one big time console maker will eventually try something like this but i doubt it will be anytime soon.

I just want to reply with a picture of a Virtual Boy.

Ok, no, we're not going to have magical fairy tales about this subject. Nintendo does not create magic. The technology is not there to support it at a commercially feasible level (to make it not look like shit and still cost 199 or 249). ONE day a big time console maker will try it, but it will be when it IS feasible.

Virtua Boy doesn't count!

Amirox, i forgot to put a smiley after that comment. I really don't think the rev will include a headset.

I'm wondering what resolution these Headsets support. The norm is usually 800x600 which is obviously....pretty low

I remember playing Dactyl Nightmare on VR equipment at a Technology expo like 15 years ago.

I was thoroughly unimpressed.

I did some VR thing a LOOOOOOONG time ago at this Science museum in New Jersey. I think it was for basketball. It was pretty lame, yeah.

Whats sucks is that now the technology is there to do something really cool, at least in arcades. Think about it, they were trying VR back in the early 90's. Imagine what they could do with todays hardware.

Sounds awesome. This kind of headset is pretty much what I was hoping this generation would bring. Head tracking allows for so many awesome possibilities. It would be great if Nintendo or Sony supported something like this for their machines.

I wonder how the stereoscopic image is generated considering that they say it works with Xbox 360.

It needs a 360 Chair or some kinda of enclosement to give you true 360 degree of movements. I can't see myself turning around on my Couch.
Why not? You turn your head to see if something is approaching from behind but you control your virtual body using the controller. Or what about a racer where your can look around in the cockpit and check out the side view mirrors through the windows. Or a football game where you can see the entire pitch by turning your head from side to side. Makes it easier to make long passes. The possibilities are endless!

If this is true, they will not be used in next-gen gaming. I really can't see a major player making such a mistake these days.

I've never liked the VR headsets with head-tracking technology because they seem to ignore the fact that you also move your eyes a lot when you move your head. They just made me sick and irritated

800x600....hmmm, if it did 1024x768 i'm there!

Yep, the resolution is to low still to be with games. You think 800x600 is bad on a PC? Imagine a screen thats about a few inches away from your eyes.

Yeah, I don't see how Nintendo (or anyone else) would do it this gen. I think maybe in two generations it might be time to visit this again, but, then again - maybe not. We still have a few real innovations to go before we HAVE to jump to virtual environments. Revmote proves this, imo.

Keep in mind that the screens are tiny. The resolution is just fine.

Yeah that doesn't seem pleasant

It'd probably make a cool experience, but it doesnt really fit into the home console market very well, it could be a future for arcades though.
