It's been a staple of British childhoods since 1938, with the antics of characters like Dennis the Menace and Roger the Dodger loved by children everywhere.

But now The Beano has decided to stop using the nickname 'Fatty' for one of its characters to prevent young readers using the name 'in a mean way'.

From this week Frederick Brown, one of the Bash Street Kids, will be referred to as Freddy - or Frederick if he is being told off by his mother.

We absolutely should not celebrate that actually. I don’t think bullying people, especially kids, for being fat is right. But neither is celebrating fat kids. Childhood obesity is a blight and a failure of society. One we will pay for in devastating and sad ways in the future. Fat adults is bad enough. Fat kids? Way worse. That is not something to celebrate.

Shitty parents let their kids get fat in most cases and I don't think we should make fun of fat kids. Just their fat parents. Throw a dixie flag on this dude's shirt and he closely resembles your average anti-SJW warrior.

This comic looks like trash anyway so less people looking at it is probably for the better.

Yeah celebrating a coping mechanism that's very very destructive on multiple levels isn't right. What a weird world...

Also there's a difference between having some extra pounds on you while still being healthy and fit and obesity. I feel that what's in the OP is more about our general way of treating people on behalf of their physical appearance rather than the health aspect. Something this article failed to do.

Kids shouldn’t be a few extra pounds overweight though. Being relatively fit in terms of weight is never easier than when you’re a kid in terms of metabolism. Kids who have a few extra pounds are way more likely to have a rough time managing their weight as adults.

I think we do need to create some kind of stigma around being overweight. I don’t want to bully people, but we were able to decrease the amount of kids smoking by talking about what it does to people. The health consequences but also the hygiene issues related to smoking. Being fat is just as bad. Especially for kids. An anti obesity campaign similar to the anti smoking one a grew up with wouldn’t be a bad idea.

That's exactly where I as a kid got calling my fat brother Fatty from. Chcking the ABCs is seems the Beano is at 40k average sales, I can't see it being that influential "Wit da kidz" these days.

The real issues though is being born in a world where lack of real education surrounding these matters (smoking, obesity, etc etc) just isn't there and/or inadequate. (Not that weird seeing there are huge profits in those respective industries to be had) Not only for children but also parents/adults that are also in the dark regarding the fundamental seeds that spawn said problematic issues. Addressing the core root of these issues is needed instead. People (children and adults alike) naturally shouldn't feel the need to use coping mechanisms such as (over) eating, smoking, drinking, etc. They do it mostly because of underlying psychological issues were as they're aware of it or not. I personally feel those deep rooted issues stem from how fucked up this world is. When your life is shitty, life finds a way to cope. So yeah let's put a stigma on children who are just trying to cope. Most if not all aren't even aware their coping.

Sorry for my bad english...

Setting aside knowing there are also a lot of people that just dont care, or wnat to care. In these instances the blame goes to said people ofcourse.

Was anyone actually complaining about this?

They are now. Does it matter though? For evil to prevail good people have to stay silent or something like that. Intentions are good but the reasonings behind it... jfc.

And so the woke cancer digs deeper.
You need fatties getting insulted, so the other kids have real-life motivation to not be fat.

This parenting style of never wanting children to experience any form of hardship will bite us all in the ass. It creates total pansies.

When I see a fat child I want to murder the parents for being lazy good for fuck all child abusers, there is no excuse outside of a medical condition for a child to be fat, you're setting your kid up for all sorts of issues in later life and you should be embarrassed and ashamed, if you loved them you'd say no occasionally

I’m kind of amazed it’s at 40k to be honest. I dunno what I would have guessed but I would have said a lot lower. I wonder how many of those are adults who grew up with it and still buy it.

Is there no end to this shit? Kids will call other kids names no matter what. Lets wrap everything & everyone in cotton wool, and then we'll offend those who are allergic to cotton wool.

I thought it was bad when they added this to the movie description ....

Had no idea this was even still around, haven't seen it on shelves anywhere I visit for at least 2 decades. even then it was sparse.

Looked up 'Dandy' then and it seems that closed it's doors ages ago.

What kids would seriously want to read the Beano now anyway. Total nonsense.

Seems the going rate for a #1 issue from the late 1930's can fetch between 17-20k. That's even weirder to me considering how few must be still doing to rounds at this stage.

Preffered it over Dandy as a kid but even as a kid we all knew if was cheap crap that you'd read while eating whatever junk sweets you'd bought as it was cheap. 2.75 an issue now retail? Seem to tout subs monthly/yearly more than anything.

Oink! now that was a comic. (looked that up, only lasted 2 years? bloody hell, loved that comic).

Nice! Past time we made the fats a protected class. That jiggle isn't disgusting, it's freedom. I don't find freedom disgusting.

Can confirm. I was the fat kid growing up with a fat dad.

Got older, came to my senses, and lost the weight

Monkey see, monkey do
