Beating the Modern Gaming Blues part 2.....

The only reason to stick with software solutions is if you truly don’t have any extra room for a CRT. And I get that that’s the case for some people, but I have to assume at least most folks have room for a 20” CRT somewhere.
less so the space, anybody has the room for a CRT. it's just that making CRTs work on modern computing hardware is a pain. Buying these FPGA solutions can alleviate that, but if you have a decent computer it's a bit of a shame to have to use another piece of hardware just for better retro TV compat. Not to mention that doesn't cover dreamcast and 6/7th gen systems unfortunately

If you just want to play older games from the past there's not much wrong with using a CRT filter or even just playing without one/like normal.

MiniPC + Bazzite and a couple controllers make 70% of other gaming systems obsolete. ETA prime made a whole channel off covering these little wonders of tech
I do have a ser5 but found those mini pc's have limitations especially when up scaling.

There are still great games coming out but they sure are getting rare. Well, at least I don’t have the feeling of missing out that marked childhood.

I agree OP, its been tough lately. The only regular current year releases I get are from music, books and manga/artbooks. But the bulk of my purchases have gone to restored and rescanned older films spanning decades, then older games. Most of the gaming content I watch is from channels covering classic retro stuff that has either been unreleased in the west or is fairly obscure and little known. Same thing with films, most of what I've purchased has been completely new to me and my girlfriend and we've had a blast watching nearly all of them.

There is an absolute sea of media out there ripe for discovery that is, depending on one's own tastes, experience and expectations very rewarding and enjoyable. I'd love to get into modern emulation on a powerful PC but haven't gone that route yet. Sadly the game industry loves to either neglect their past or nickel and dime the consumer any chance they get, meanwhile I have old movies getting an actual quality "remaster" from the camera negatives with incredible chunky boxes filled with booklets, posters, stickers, promo materials etc for far cheaper than any game(physical that is).

Its a funny situation, the tech now is impressive, but the content is severely lacking though granted quality is in the eye of the beholder. Its just funny to see people so easy to fork over their cash or digital dosh for the same trite year after year. I used to bemoan older folks growing up who'd compare then new things to prior works but I wish people would be more scrutinizing and guard their wallets more.

Some might say that I have a problem. Others would say that I have a solution.
7,39TB of purchased and self dumped ROMS. Amazing matte.

Great OP. Emulation and retro gaming has been a literal oasis for me for almost 6 years now. It's free of the garbage that made me side-eye anything made in current day. Except for the occasional AAA title, only Indies excite me now.
No lobbies and social hubs and shit, no online multiplayer....anything! No day one updates. Game isn't selling me anything after I press start. Usually feature complete (a feature these days exclusive to only indies.) No using DLC to finish a development of a game, then have the balls to charge me for it. When I step out of my 50 TB Hyperspin/Big Box/Emulation Station build PC and onto something modern, it feels like the air has gotten toxic.

My Switch ROMs are self-dumped. It's hard to make an argument for piracy for the other ROMs when their are TBs of ROMs available from the Internet Archive. You cannot actually purchase those physical game cartridges/discs anymore from the actual publishers/developers, meaning that any way you acquire the game (physically) results in no money going to them.
