beatmania iidx 7th style

Just about to order this game and the offical controller... I've watched the video's all night and GOD DAMN this game looks fun! I'm a huge fan of Frequency and the like and just never gave beatmania a chance. So what do you guys think 7th style ok to jump into as a newbie, I was decent at Freq unlocked all but the last four songs..?

Well checking my save file I reached stage 5 on expert just couldn't finish those last four.. Bleh, but still will give beatmania a try :)

The only Style that's not good for beginners is 4th, because the song selection is the lowest, there's no Beginners Mode or other extras (I like to think Drill Mode helps pound some fundamentals down), and unless you live in Japan it's pretty costly to pick up.

Everything else is pretty good. 3rd has a long song list and easy tunes, 5th and up have either Beginner or Drill modes to help get used to the game. 7th is certainly a fine place to start.

e: The US version will have no specific equivalent to a Japanese style; it currently has 9th Style's interface, but it definitely will not have all of PS2 9th Style's songs. As of now, nobody has any idea when it specifically will come out (Spring 06, but when...), what songs will be on it, what the US controller will look like, or how much it'll all cost.

e2:
I'm not huge into Beatmania, but if you enjoy Beatmania why not try Pop'n Music afterwards?
If I want to play Popn I'll play IIDX on Double with Auto Scratch :)

Yeah I can't wait for the US version hahaha, I'm just hope I'm capable of playing it when it arrives!

"If I want to play Popn I'll play IIDX on Double with Auto Scratch "

Who plays pop'n with their fingers? (Besides those with mini-controllers) And auto-scratch is for pansies! Real men have pinky muscles that could crush an infant's head.

m3w: Yeah :-p, playing pop'n with double IIDX turntables sounds like you're wussing out of how real men play pop'n.

I'd buy an IIDX controller now, but with it coming to america soon, I think I'll just hold out and *hope* we get a good selection of songs.

People who find IIDX "too hard" or get their panties in a twist about music preferences, from what I've noticed ;)

But that's what my crack was getting at; I personally see no reason to play Popn at all when I've got IIDX. IIDX on Double with no turntables and a few less keys is all Popn is to me, and yes I know there's a gigantic chasm of difference between pressing small keys with fingers versus slapping large round buttons, but, whatever. I don't have the interest, spare money, or spare time.

Hey, you're the one who posted it in public ~ send PMs if you don't want your opinion commented on :)

And uh... um. For lack of anything better to do, here's some result pics of 7th Style's chicas:

Oh, you can comment on it all you want, I'm just saying it was a recommendation to the original poster, not to you. (*coughelitistcough*) :-p

Hot girls and a music game, NICE! Yeah PNM looks fun just love the style/music/controller of iidx :)

IIDX really is the king of music games.

Pop'n is fun, no doubt, but I can't say I think its as good. Much of the music in it is terrible (with some gems strewn about), and its a bit easier (scoring and song difficulty) than IIDX.

The transition between mini controller and ASC isn't that big, really. I can adjust between them pretty quickly. Thus, the mini controller is fine. :)

9th has the slickest interface, and that might be more important than you think. The songlist isn't the easiest, though, nor is the Beginner's Mode.

Most say 5th has the easiest Beginners'. I started with 6th and was fine, largely due to Drill Mode (which is only in 5th and 6th). 8th is good, too, and 7th isn't a bad style... They tend to get harder each release.

Hell, you can buy pretty much any style to get into, I suppose, but I suggest starting with 6th or above. Quick random notes:

3rd - Ancient (yet cool-looking) interface; doesn't save doubles scores seperately (overwriting standard scores, gets confusing), doesn't notify you when you get a high score, doesn't show you song letter grade after playing. Has the easiest songlist, overall, though it lacks a Beginners mode (which scales every song down to three stars or less). Hi-Speed 3 is hell, and largely unusable to new players. You'll care about that sooner or later.

4th - Interface-wise, a slight step up from 3rd. Includes a display when you get a new score, saves doubles scores, has a useful new display option for doubles players. Has a small songlist. Supposedly the rarest game. I'd suggest it as the last style you buy, to be honest, though it does have its own awesome songs. Hi-Speed 3 still ass.

5th - Still no individual song letter grades. Hi-Speed 3 slowed down to largely usable, though some songs make you want a faster alternative. Beginners' Mode added (1-3 star variants of every song), Drill Mode added (quick sections of songs, more of a tutorial than anything else, I found it very useful in 6th). Songlist I'm a bit undecided on, though its one of the smaller styles.

6th - Pretty as hell. Great Beginners' and Drill. Cool unlockable videos of good players. The series starts to get pretty trance-y from here on out. Nice high-difficulty songs. I started with this style, unless you count emulated Wonderswan Beatmania and BM98 on the PC. :p Hi-4 added, wonderful.

7th - The one that wasn't supposed to come out. Arguably the style with the best soundtrack. Drill mode removed. Don't expect to unlock the last song in the style, Abyss Heavens. Its a preview track from 9th, though.

8th - No real interface changes from 7th. The stupid: Expert Mode plays of songs don't save scores.

9th - Hi-res. Biggest collection of difficult songs. Not many old songs are included in this release. Some people feel this game is sorta the beginning of a decline in music quality, but I don't really agree with that. Not sure if I can suggest this style's beginner mode.

IIDX is definitely the most challenging of them all, no doubt and I'm glad it's coming to the US soon.

As far as music, while Pop'n has lots of really goofy, poppy toothache inducing crap, sometimes IIDX goes a litttttle to out there and some songs are bordering on arhythmic (And that's coming from a huge fan of the genres Beatmania likes to pick from).

Woah, great post Tain! I think my purchase still stands with 7th style maybe after that I'll pick up 9th style!
