Beer sucks.

There is good beer, but if you don't enjoy stuff like French Onion soup or a cup of coffee then you may never enjoy the taste of beer.

To just say "Ugh, all beer tastes like piss." is one of the most pointless comments I've ever heard in my life. It'd be like someone saying "Ugh, all women are ugly." ... well, true, if you're a gay man, it's a good bet that you aren't attracted to women.

those quotes pretty much sum it all up. its all about what your tastes are. beer will never agree with some people, same thing with pot or any other intoxicating substance.

only sucky beer sucks. americans know all about sucky beer, we mass produce and consume some truly awful brews here. but many of us who really like the taste of beer have many alternatives. (we refer to all types of brews as "beer" here in the US, but know the difference between different types.)

we brew a lot of great beer in the states too. but imports usually come out a bit ahead.

I'm not sure if anyone can get it outside of Alberta, but I'll always have a bottle of Big Rock Honey Brown in my fridge.

When I'm out having beers, I'll usually hit Brewsters for their River City Raspberry pale ale.

Heh, after moving to Japan recently from Calgary the only thing I can say I miss from there is the beer. The River City Raspberry was good, but I still think the best beers in Calgary were at Wild Wood. They also have specials on pints or pitchers and some kind of food four days of the week, and the food is so much better than the usual pub/restaurant drinking hangouts.

And ya, Big Rock is great for keeping around in the fridge. Although I think my favourite Canadian beers are made by Unibroue out of Quebec. La Fin du Monde!

Gawd, i love that taddy porter. Found it at a local supermarket when visiting my mom. Has a nice malted barley taste and a clean finish. Wish i could find it here.

The only beer I really enjoy is a guiness (and mostly for irish car bombs).
It just seems to me, if I want to get pissed drunk, liquor gets me there faster, and if I want something to sip with the buzz, a screwdriver or rum and coke tastes far better than a beer I can pick up at the store. Plus, I can use the liquor and its mixers separately if needed. Its all about versatility to me.

Our liquor stores are state run, and... suck. i found a great gin (Hendrick's Gin) at the liquor store a few months back, and it turns out they're discontuining it, because 1)gin's not popular, and 2)gin that's not Beefeater's or Tanqueray isn't popular.

i've really got to drive out of town a half hour or so to a place that sells good imports. Don't usually have the time, especially just for beer.

Newbs. I was like you once. Would only drink those little fruity drinks that tasted like Hi-C with a splash of alcohol for fun. It's the child inside having a hard time letting go. Your tastes will change. Even if you still don't like beer in the future, you'll definately like drinks you never thought you would.

FYI- Bud, Coors etc etc.. are not beer.

:lol Quoted for truth.

A variation on this type of thread pops up every six months or so at GA... But I'm glad to see the beer drinkers starting to outnumber the wine cooler crowd now.

I think in order to acquire a taste for beer you've got to be willing to try a wide variety. The first beer I ever got drunk on was Bud, which I thought tasted like utter shit. Luckily, I live in Michigan so there are a lot of micro brews and Canadian beers to choose from.

I used to drink crap beer just to get a buzz while watching movies or playing videogames with my friends. Now I actually buy more expensive beer for the taste. I'll have one or two a few times a week. If I actually do drink enough to feel it, surprise, the buzz is much better than any buzz you would get from those watered-down factory beers.

I drink beer. I drink Budweiser, Miller Lite, Foster's, Shiner, and Belgium beers my friends bring over. I drink liquor as well, mostly Vodka and Rum. But if I am watching some sports with the homies or playing some games or just hanging out, beer is the drink of choice. I can drink alot more of it than liquor and the night doesn't end as fast. I mean, if I drank Vodka for 3-4 hours, I would be passed out.

Now when my girl is over...it is Grey Goose time.

As far as the import, high dollar beers I think some are good, some are bad. they definitely pack more of a punch and have a more appealing taste. But I actually like the taste of Budweiser. It is weird, Bud Light gives me the shits the next day.

Beer doth suck. Rum, does not.

I agree wholeheartedly, but then I am Puerto Rican, so no family gathering is complete without the presence of some Don Q (we only use Bacardi when we are forced to).

Actually, I don't really like rum by itself that much, but it mixes wonderfully with 7up or as a Cuba Libre (with Coke) and proper Piña Colada is my favorite drink of all.

I actually liked beer when my dad first let me try some (I was about 5), but now it just has no flavor or tastes like slightly bitter water. That goes for microbrews and Guinness also. The only beer that I have ever tried that I might bother finishing a glass of was Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, because it actually had a little flavor.

Wine, however, may be the single greatest achievment of humanity.

So far in my life Moosehead is the greatest beer i've ever had. Last year I went to a beer festival and was just blown away by how many different types of beer there was. I think I had almost every beer that was offered there. Some were god awful and some were stupendous. All I can say is go out there and try many different beers, you may find one that you love.

You know how you can tell if a guy likes Moosehead?

He's got antler marks on his chest.

Badum-pum! I'll be here all week! Try the veal!

I find beer hard to stomach, and most alcoholic beverages for that matter. Corona's the easiest, I usually don't have any trouble downing a bottle, slowly. I even appreciate its purity... for a little while. A second bottle is stretching it. Wine is a lot better, because it has the fruitiness to it, but it has to be with a meal, otherwise it makes me shudder.

On the other hand, if I have a bunch of Mike's Hard Lemonade at my disposal, I could go through a six-pack without flinching and still see straight, although I wouldn't want to drive...

I do not understand those who hate "most beers", yet enjoy Corona. I think Corona tastes like urine.

So Don Q is better? Is it more expensive than Bacardi? Is it smoother?

But they have cool commercials.

I personally like Don Q better. Don Q Cristal is still a pretty cheap rum, but I prefer the taste to Bacardi. I hadn't even seen it stateside until fairly recently, but in Puerto Rico you can buy it at any supermarket for something like $5-6 a bottle.

Now Bacardi is NOT like Fosters. They do have a substantial presence on the island and we do use it in the absence of Don Q (which is my family's rum of choice, but there are many, many other excellent Puerto Rican rums).

The Serralles family, which distills Don Q, has a cool mansion that's now a museum in Ponce.

anyone who says they don't like beer has no taste for real alcohol... same thing with wine, gin, burboun, vodka, scotch, etc.

Now I'm not saying you can't like beer and thus have to not like gay ass fruity drinks with like umbrellas in them, or screwdrivers, long island iced teas, redbull/vodka, zinfandels (no it isn't really wine), etc. or any other drink that doesn't taste a god damn thing like any alcohol ever brewed or distilled... but that isn't alcohol.. that is koolaid/soda that gets you drunk....

anyway, back to the original. beer doesn't taste any shittier than cheese, most vegetables, semi-sweet dark chocolate or any other taste that doesn't instantly trigger our salt or sugar taste buds to fire. It is an acquired taste, just like all REAL alcohols (minus the fruity shit). However, if you think beer tastes completely awful and say that you like gin, borboun, tequila, etc.... well, then you are just an idiot and a liar.. one can certainly not prefer beer and like the others but it is impossible to say it tastes like shit and still like the others.

Bullshit. Chocolate and cheese (weee) are NOT acquired tastes. There's a reason most people hate beer when they first try it. Alcohol is a poison and it takes a while for your body to get used to it.

I have to call bullshit here. Guinness is like a beer milkshake. It's a beer that eats like a meal. I know of no one--no one--who would compare Guinness with "slightly bitter water." Even among people who hate Guinness.

Hey Scrow, you're from Australia, right? How did you meet our mutual friend Hoegaarden? Is it buyable in Australia? If so, one reason less for me not to migrate to your country :D. However, if Hoegaarden is near-perfection (regarding white beer), this is perfection:

Funny, you know the second beer i really tried was Guinness Stout. The first sip kinda knocked me on my ass, but i loved the stuff. It's the equivalent of a shot of espresso, a decent espresso at that. i've been drinking bitter drinks all my life (teas mainly), so it was like coming home. i still enjoy a Stout every now and then, especially with a good vanilla ice cream like Haagen Dazs.

i'd say the comparison to cheese is most accurate, because there's some sharp cheeses out there that most people won't touch. Unless you live in an area with a lot of foreigners or an upper-class area with imported items, your exposure to foods outside the American norm is quite limited.

ummmm.. yes they are and no it isn't.

semi-sweet dark chocolate (notice the qualification) and cheese, along with most vegetables are bitter as far as our taste buds are concerned. they are an acquired taste. you are given it as a child and told it is good for you so you like it. but it is not like something salty or sweet that actually sends your brain a signal that it is good. we eat it because we are told it is good and then we adapt to the taste to a point that it becomes enjoyable.

Beer and all alcohol is the same way. It is a very bitter taste that DOESN'T taste good initially. But you keep drinking it (usually to become intoxicated) and after a while you acquire a taste for it and like it more.

I never said that you can't like beer. I said you can't say beer tastes like shit and then say other types of straight alcohol taste good. the people who do that are usually talking about mixed drinks.. in which case that isn't alcohol but a way for women to still get drunk.

as for alcohol being a poison, this isn't true at all... alcohol is a blood thinner which in many cases is a good thing. Even more so it is really the only natural blood thinner out there.. though you can also use aspirin (or is it ibuprofen)... too much alcohol can certainly be hard on your liver, or can thin your blood to dangerous levels, but too much sugar or fats can be bad for you, too much protein can be bad for you, etc... anything in excess can be bad for you. but in moderation alcohols actually have positive effects on our bodies.

one beer that I used to like but have grown to not like is Heineken... back in the day I used to love it (maybe like 12 years ago)... but then I didn't have it for a while and going back to it it is almost ridiculously sweet now... almost like corona sweet (which I like more due to the lime than just the beer which kind of tastes like ass).

I've been drinking Tsing Tao a bunch recently (after grabbing some at a chinese restaurant) and some local brewery's triple bock which is delicious (and potent)... and for some reason I just have no problems with miller or bud... talk about acquiring a taste.. like the mcdonald's of beer.. :p

The reason I ask is because I have been looking for a new rum as I am getting burned out on Bacardi. The alternative could be just to stop drinking, but NAAAAAAHHHHHH

I love Meyers Jamaican Rum. I get it at safeway, more expensive than bacardi, but worth it. its a dark rum, but I love it!

With so many people recommending Hoegaarden, I'm tempted to try it again. I've tried it once and it tasted disgusting to me. It had a cough syrup like flavor that I couldn't stand. Does it normally taste like that or did I have a bad bottle or something?

And to contribute to the thread, I used to hate beer too, despite liking some of the Carlsberg my dad let me sip when I was a kid. However, the first time I tried Guinness, I loved it. After that I went through a period where my friends and I would drink 40s of Olde English, back when they were still cheap here, to get drunk. This is probably what got me used to the whole beer thing. I guess once you can stomach the bad stuff, you'll start liking the good.

I have a bad gag reflex whenever I drink beer and no matter how many times people say 'you gotta get used to it' .. I've drank long enough and whenever I take a drink of it, my body literally shivers. The stuff ain't good at all. I have an easier time drinking any kind of hard liquor straight over beer.

I never quite understood why you should get used to beer in the first place, aside from fitting in with the crowd. If it tastes like piss, why would I want to drink more?

For the record, I can't stand wine either.
