Ben Carson states that low income housing is too posh.

because the poors don't deserve dignity

At yet another, he nodded, plainly happy, as officials explained how they had stacked dozens of bunk beds inside a homeless shelter and purposefully did not provide televisions.

Will anyone be surprised when they announce that their new strategy of ending poverty is by just throwing all the poors in a furnace?

It's disgusting that the right thinks like this

Compassion, Mr. Carson explained in an interview, means not giving people “a comfortable setting that would make somebody want to say: ‘I’ll just stay here. They will take care of me.’”

Until there's a viable means for forward progress that isn't entire dependent on luck/prior station in life, this will always be complete horseshit.

It's amazing to me how this bootstraps nonsense is engrained in America.

"You don't deserve anything until you contribute some sweat equity".

Ben is a moron.

I am not totally against the idea of encouraging people to rise above government provided housing and assistance rather than encouraging them to stay in it forever. I just don't agree with what he says or does to support that notion.

What we should do is create massive compounds for low income people. Kind of like that Ja Rule festival, but less amenities; a blow up pool filled with balls? Forget about it.

Don't even let these scum have toilets, they made their choices, let them shit in their hands. And we should all direct our sewage run off straight into the compound, which they can use for their drinking water. (Sigh too liberal, probably safer than Flint water)

God didn't want these people to succeed, otherwise they would have, so let them stew in their own filth. There's much bigger issues at stake right now anyway, like tax cuts for those that deserve it.

I think people who receive public assistance should be forced to wear burlap sacks with each form of assistance they receive stitched into the sack in large red letters. SNAP, NSLP, MEDICAID, PUBLIC HOUSING? Also, with their snap benefits, they shouldn't be allowed to buy healthy, more expensive food because that's not fair to the tax payers, but they also shouldn't be allowed to buy cheaper, more processed foods because tax payers are just paying for them to eat junk food! They should get one piece of bread and some gruel until they can afford bootstraps, which they could choose to boil and eat instead or perhaps construct a tent out of if they would prefer some sort of protection from the elements.

Maybe if you dig around in that HUD budget you will find some military costs hidden in there that you can get rid of to free up some money.

Bootstraps, but don't you dare try to tax inheritance.

I grew up in a conservative household. The right hates the poor. The belief is that if you're poor it's because you're lazy, and if you get any sort of hand out then you'll never want to work. They believe that the poor need to live like POWs, otherwise they'll be complacent. Hell, the only reason I escaped that kind of toxic thinking was when I experienced it myself. I was fresh out of college and couldn't get a well paying job. I was working nights as a janitor so I could attend interviews during the day. My mom decided she needed to have a talk with me about being too comfortable where I was. Obviously i only didn't have a job because I wasn't looking hard enough, because I must have been making enough as a night janitor to be comfortable. Because in their eyes, anyone who is comfortable will never seek to better their station.

It's an evil, ignorant way of thinking that has been reinforced by years of bootstraps and anti union conversations.

It's sad to me when people who are from lower income backgrounds don't want to help those in need because they have the attitude of "I made it out, why can't they?" when they probably are a one in a million in terms of talent or maybe even just got the right breaks that other people didn't.

Like, Ben Carson is from freaking Detroit, he should be helping people in need and not just telling them they need to pull themselves out

What happen after that? Did you eventually get the job you were looking for?

Too posh? Didn't this idiot just get stuck in an elevator in a public housing building? The Administration of Evil just won't stop fucking us over.

Yeah the "why can't people just be more like me?" mentality of some people is very annoying.

Will anyone be surprised when they announce that their new strategy of ending poverty is by just throwing all the poors in a furnace?

Oh come on - there's no way they'd do that.

They'd just toss them off a cliff instead in order to save the cost of running the furnaces...

What happen after that? Did you eventually get the job you were looking for?

Eventually. But like most people that find their way out, it was a combination of knowing the right people and dumb luck.

My grandmother knew someone that was hiring for a call center job. My degree from University of Michigan that my parents helped pay for helped get me in the door. And my dumb luck of joining a company right before they hit the jackpot of massive success and explosive growth helped me be in the right place at the right time for a series of promotions.

I worked hard, sure. But bootstraps and relative comfort had nothing to do with it.

"We must remind the poor why they are poor, they cannot be allowed to have luxuries". Screw off just because you make millions of dollars it does not give you the right to tell what people can and cannot have. Some people man.

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.

"Both very busy, sir."

"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to hear it."

"Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude," returned the gentleman, "a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?"

"Nothing!" Scrooge replied.

"You wish to be anonymous?"

"I wish to be left alone," said Scrooge. "Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned: they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there."

"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."

"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population." Seeing clearly that it would be useless to pursue their point, the gentlemen withdrew. Scrooge resumed his labours with an improved opinion of himself, and in a more facetious temper than was usual with him.

Efficiency and progress is ours once more
Now that we have the Neutron bomb
It's nice and quick and clean and gets things done
Away with excess enemy
But no less value to property
No sense in war but perfect sense at home

The sun beams down on a brand new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
Jobless millions whisked away
At last we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight

In the reality of these kinds of conservatives, the only reason society exists is to enable the few worthy people to acquire lots of money and prove they're valuable human beings. Society for them is the opposite of a collective effort to uplift all people and improve the human condition. In the richest country on Earth, not a dime nor a drop of water can be given to anyone just because they're a human being. They must past a battery of rigorous tests before they deserve it.

Just shows the ignorance. They think poor people have access to good jobs but simply choose not to work them out of laziness.

If they truly want to solve the problem then they should focus on making employers pay better, hire more, offer better benefits, and treat their workers better.

I really do not understand how we've accrued such wealth, but greed took over to the extent that helping others achieve even a fraction of the cumulative luxury has been branded as immoral. Absolutely ridiculous and shameful.

Christ, recently I remember reading something from an economist back in the 20's or 30's estimating that we may not even need to work in the future due to the luxuries we'll have created, and yet the upper class and the politicians of America have dictated that they're the only ones whose time is deserving of wealth.

Antoine Williams, 45, who lives in a supportive housing complex for the chronically homeless, shook his head after Mr. Carson finished greeting officials in the lobby of his building and headed out in a four-car motorcade.

“If he got something to do with Trump, that means he’s not really for us,” Mr. Williams said. “It’s not surprising. That’s what the rich do, they make it hard for the poor.”

Choice quote right here.

If I was as good at separating conjoined twins as Carson is, I'd probably just stick to that instead of ruining my image through politics.
