Best gaming AGP graphics card

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
Guys, what is the best AGP graphics card available at the moment?

I have a strong feeling my first gen Sparkle 6800 is nerfing my entire system when i try and play anything new (Athlon 3.4 , 1 gig ram, Sparkle 6800 = 1 frame per second at bare minimum Dx9.0c settings - unless this is normal?)

Any suggestions for a PC spaz?

cheers,
dc.

I hope you know PCI cards are far better, from what i heard anyway. I have ATI Radeon 700064MB PCI, works like a charm. If i was you tho, if you dont have any PCI slots, just make sure whatever you buy is cheap , but a good one, say a ATI 9800 OR ATI 9000 or something with 128MB Or 256MB.

Not quite, PCI is slow as hell (and pretty ancient these days, nobody uses PCI for video anymore). PCI Express is the good one.

This is one of the strangest posts I've read in a long time...

I could understand not realizing that PCI and PCI-Express are two different standards, but recommending cards several generations below what he is currently using?

Look for a 6800GT. The prices should have come down somewhat and it is a great card. The performance problems that you described are certainly not normal, so I'd imagine your other card is fried or there is simply some other problem with your machines configuration...

Is that current card a standard 6800?

The way PCI-E cards work is like this:

The card comes with extra connectors on the bottom. You cut off the ones you don't need with a razorblade so it fits inside your machine. The manufacturer puts them there so you can cut them off if you don't need them.

edit:
Here's a picture of what I mean, but done to a 7800.

The even weirder thing is , it runs WoW and HL2 and Doom 3 absolutely no problems (but no SM3.0/DX9.0c?) but FEAR, CoD2 demo, Battlefield 2 = 1 fps in DX9 mode, but totally fine in DX8/7 mode.

"Is that current card a standard 6800?"

it is - it's close to 2 years old.

6800? That sounds strange - you card really shouldn't perform that way (1fps), I have a SLI GT6800 set-up and it works fine in aforementioned games. (FEAR, COTD2...)

You're sure you've got your display drivers installed correctly? Could be somethnig goofy like that.

Also, maybe you don't have DX9 installed. You're sure you've got 9.0c installed?

edit: Although, to run FEAR, it automatically installs 9.0c, so who the fuck knows.

Feel the powah! Its lacking the HDR and 3.0 shader tech of nvidia's cards. However, you will (debatably) on average get better performance from this card than any other single AGP card solution at the moment. This is of course until Nvidia makes 7800 AGP cards.

yeah, i'm totally confused myself - i've installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and it is giving me the same results.

I also want a good AGP card for F.E.A.R. and price isn't a problem for me. :D

And what's PCI Express? What are its strengths/weaknesses?

I know I seem like a person under a rock on the PCI express.

If price isn't a problem, you might as well get a PCI-E mobo to go with a video card.

Hey Ecroifirt, I have the same card. Very nice.

DCharlie, maybe it´s not a problem of your card, but your motherboard or any other piece. You live in Japan damnit, go to Akiba and mount other PC with a 7800 GTX ;) Now seriously. I´m agree it´s not normal, I keep saying it could be a problem of other component, have you tried to update the drivers of your motherboard?

PCI Express it´s a slot of the motherboard where you connect the GPU, like it is the AGP. It was a time all cards came with AGP, but now there is a mixed bag. I think PCI Express has a better performance now for what I have read and know (not much).

Gaijin, a massive thank you - it was the motherboard.

Now i'm in 1280x1024 DX9.0c SM3.0 heaven. Thanks! :)

You are welcome :) Next time I am in Japan I let you to invite me a drink in gratitude ;)
