Best lesser-known games for Xbox?

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I've got a $100 gift certificate from EB Games burning a hole in my pocket and I don't really have much to get... so I'm thinking of finally forking over the cash for an Xbox... I don't like FPS or sports or most games with American-influenced game design very much so there goes most of the Xbox library... but there are some games that look interesting to me.

I'm gonna definitely pick up:
Ninja Gaiden
Jet Set Radio Future
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Guilty Gear X2#
Outrun 2
Fable

I hear Otogi 2 is pretty good too.

Are there any other lesser known games that I might like?

I just found Buffy used for $20 Canadian and I'm really liking it. If you're a buffy fan you MUST own it, if not, you'll enjoy it too but not as much. It's a suprisngly good game, especially considering it's bumpy development.

They need to make an Angel videogame. I don't want it to be "a bonus episode!" like the other two buffy games, but actually be in fights we've seen in the series. Play as Gunn, sneaking into the senator's office and trying to take on 5 vampires at once. Play as Wesley dual-pistoling like mad against Skip. Play as Ilyria and BLOW SHIT UP!

Or take control of Angel and take on the Beast. Really, the potential is limitless.

That's it?

The XBOX is not the place for exclusive titles.

You guys forgot:

hotd3front.jpg

Magic: Battlegrounds.

It's probably cheap as hell by now, so there's no reason not to give it a whirl. It's very underrated.

Fatal Frame 1 & 2. Both better than the PS2 versions.
Metal Slug 3
Genma Onimusha is also updated for the Xbox.
Silent Hill 2 also has some stuff added.

The Xbox version of SH2 is the version to stay away from. We've gone through it all before, I'll just sum it up.
Reasons:

Lower quality video
30fps cutscenes instead of 60fps
voices in cutscenes not synched
lighter, thinner fog implementation
Washed out colors unless played in 480p (Xbox issue across the board)

Get the PS2 Greatest Hits version. Everything added to Restless Dreams, none of the Xbox problems.

GunValkyrie rocks very hard. But don't attempt if you can't handle something like Ninja Gaiden on normal or Otogi.

Battle Engine Aquila is a good game (it's available on PS2 as well)
and I really enjoyed Robotech: Battlecry, which is multiplatform.

And I must say that Phantom Crash is an excellent title. If a sequel is released for Xenon or even Xbox with online play it'll be amazing.

It's not about it being exclusive, it's about finding a "good" lesser known title of which there are few, since if they were "good" they wouldn't be lesser known. :lol

Of the top of my head I can't really think of any that fit the criteria. Especially without "American-influenced design"...

But if you're willing to bend a little... hmm... other than what's been stated (especially Buffy 1 and GunValkyrie).

Batman Rise of Sin Tzu (for multiplayer, if not skip altogether)
I-Ninja
kill.switch(pushing it for "good" level heh)
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Kung Fu Chaos (*see Batman)
Psi Ops
Second Sight
Then of course there's the Capcom fighters etc.

Just picked up Gladius Xbox in the Wal-Mart bargain bin for $15. Great game, while it's not exclusive, it's by far the best version.

Ah, the preils of shoddy porting. On that note, how does the PC versions of the Silent Hill games play?

He's looking for Xbox games.

Besides, I like the Xbox version better, as it's 480p, and I don't care about the cutscenes as much as the gameplay. But yes, this was all done in the other thread.

Breakdown - by Namco, gameplay is bit flawed, but good story and immersive first-person experience, 10$?.
Murakumo - like totally flawed, but interesting idea (mechas chasing each other in urban skyscraper filled area) and probably cheap, early game from Otogi/MetalWolfChaos makers

I don't know how well-known it'll be when it hits the US, but Phantom Dust is an amazing game. It takes some time to get used to the whole third-person action game + card game thing, but it's fun as hell in multiplayer. Surprisingly fast-paced, too.

Oh, totally forgot about Breakdown. I've wrote about this game before but I definitely think everyone should at least try it. If you can withstand the infuriatingly bad design decisions then you can treat yourself to a very unique experience that can be quite memorable.

As for Murakumo, stay FAR FAR FAR away. As you can see from my recommendations I'm a pretty big fan of Mech games and have played most of the ones available on the Xbox. Furthermore, I have a very high tolerance for bad games and can find a lot of things to like, but Murakumo has almost NO redeeming qualities whatsoever. A truly horrible game.

You're thinking Phantom Dust, though Phantom Crash is also a nice underappreciated title. The controls go quite fast and loose, which takes a lot of getting used to (and which they unfortunately haven't corrected for the upcoming PS2 sequel), but it's got a wacky sense of humor, and a nice soundtrack from Japanese indie artists (with in-game links to their real-world websites). Both the original and the sequel have unusually incredible opening cinemas, where I might not normally find an opening cinema noteworthy (other special exception: Space Raiders).

Other than that, I've been playing Armed & Dangerous every free moment I've had lately, gearing myself up to their forthcoming PSP title, and it's vindaloo-rocketed its way to one of my top 3 XB titles.

Cockles is dead on with the Haunted Mansion recommendation -- it's multiplatform, but since I've got the XB version I'll plug it here as well.

I dunno if its a *good* game but I just picked up Yager for 10 bucks at Best Buy. Give it a try maybe?

This next game isn't unknown by any means, but I feel compelled to maybe list it for you anyways since its 20 bucks at EB. Full Spectum Warrior.

Cheers to the folks who listed Buffy. It really is a nice game for its genre. I picked up the game instantly when I learned it was a beat-em-up. I enjoyed it so damn much I gave the tv series a chance and ever since I've been a fan of the series. +1000 to the Collective. Their Indy game is also a great one. The fisticuff action is actually abit betters than Buffys to me as well. And yes-its really too bad we never got an Angel video game. What could have been...

Just remembered a few others.

Though its been universaly panned, pick up Malice anyways. Its a basic platformer that is simple but fun. The controls and camera are good, there is alot of platforming, and the visuals are pretty solid as well, good textures and lighting to go with some nice bum mapping. The game is around a 5-8 hour playthrough.

Battle Star Galactica. Lots of cylone dog fights. Great voice overs with the cylons in radio chatter. Visuals are strong, controls hold up well, music and sound effects have a flare for the dramatics. The missions are typical defend the fleet and attack cylons but its not that tough actually. It maybe took me no more than 2-3 tries on someof the harder missions.

Good luck finding this one new though. I hunted down a brand new one for quite some time. Since my area had nothing but used ones without manuals. You don't wanna pick those up,since you do need to read the manual for some of the flight manuevers. Though there is a manual built within the game though,so I guess you could still get by without the booklet. If youre a fan of colored manuals then its worth hunting a new one down though, theres lots of good illustrations within it.

Dark Angel, another beat-em-up. This one actually plays like Buffy. In that your character has a meter that she can build to where eventualy you'll go to a more enhanced fighting mode and hand out even more damage to enemies.

Theres also a good sense of diverse combos in the game. Good combinations with Punches, grapple moves, air throws, round house kicks,Matrix like Neo air kicks, you can realy mix it up. They also added stealth elements that do get tough later on though. If youre spotted you have to sometimes take out an area with alot of guards. The game then becomes a timed battle. You have to use your rage meter, and weapons to further enhance your fighting. Once the base has been alerted to your presence you have like for example 30 seconds to take out 4 guards,60 seconds to take out 5-6. It depends really,if you sneak around and take as many as you can you'll have less to deal with if spotted. The stealth plays like Metal Gear Solid btw. You snap necks the same way,you have a radar that shows your danger meter when guards are near and how well they are alerted to your presence.

Theres also an electric shock gun that comes in short supplies of amo, where you can take a few guards out here and there in hairy situations when there are areas with alot of guards. The visuals are nothing to write home about,by that I mean you can tell its runningon an engine that looks like its been made with renderware. Sortta like a mid range PS2 game so to speak. Though it does look abit better if youre playing the game on concomponent though, everything looks more clear, textures have abit morecolor. Musicaly- its got a good use of techno within its fighting action so it really gets you into the mood of fighting. Overall its a good game, worth 20 dollars. Its a very underated game that can easily be assumed its just another licensed trash game. When in reality its acually a fun little beat-em-up.

Jesus, what a typo. With all the Phantom Crash mentions in this thread, can you blame me?

Yeah, major bummer. I guess I'm sort of lucky though. I started watching both Buffy and Angel last year. So I've got plenty of seasons to watch ahead of me. Its a joy to buy these DVDs.

It would be great if Faith had her own series though. That girl is just wicked.

Galleon
Azurik Rise of Perathia

Two very good and entertaining games snobbed by press and players. The first one because of its graphics, the second one because most people gave up before the game could show how great it is. You should be able to get both very cheap, so maybe you should give them a try.

Other games you might want to consider:

Gladius - great SRPG from LucasArts with a very entertaining combat system. Lucasarts please make a Star Wars Gladius!
Beyond Good & Evil - a great adventure game from ubisoft
Shenmue 2 - one of the best games of all times
and if you don't have them yet get both KOTOR games!

can somebody list all the 2d shooters for xbox? i wish more shooters were ported to the xbox, with the 64MB ram...this machine is perfect.

KOTOR, not Fable. KOTOR is cheaper and better than Fable. Fable is good, but not worth $50. Wait for a price drop on that one.

How can Fable be 'lesser known' - it got tons of hype + sold over 1 mil :lol

I loved it BTW. Not as good as the hype...but the production values were first rate.

I Ninja without doubt. Most underrated game ever. Sure the camera angles are annoying (once in a great while). The game is so much damn fun though. Definitley should pick up the i ninja!

I didn't play that on Xbox, but it's fantastic. Will there be a sequel?!?

Get Kingdom Under Fire and Metal Slug 3 (as far as "lesser known" titles go).

Yup, totally agreed. I'm not particularly fond of platformers, but my brother-in-law absolutely LOVES this game.

Sucks that no one played this game. It was awesome. So funny. :)

I woulld also suggest Munch's Odysee. Another great platformer/character game that no one played.

No, I had to resort to google to make 100% sure I was getting it remembering correctly too.

I'd like to second Galleon and Munch, as well.

Werd, I got caught up on the show watching TNT. Loved the final episode. Faith has her own show it's called tru calling :lol

Forgot one.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS. Get it and you'll enjoy the shooting and great humor. These guys are I think working on that crazy shooter for the PSP,right? The one where everyone turns into zombies on Christrmas Eve?

You should get Metal Slug 3. Ya know though.. the smart people would google it. *cough emulation neo geo cough*

I got strep throat or something.. I would never even think of emulation.. ;)
