And I can't believe I forgot HK-47 and Alyx. Sam Fisher is good, too, and a lot of the supporting characters in Shenmue, Kotor, and Nintendo's games this gen have been excellent.

Seriously, I nearly put MC in my list as well, just because, yes, he does look cool. But this is about character, and I just don't see where people get character or personality out of MC. His entire 'virtual' exsistence is literally the anti-thesis of character or personality, he was forced to have none. If you've read the books, even, while you may appreciate his 'history' and backstory more, he was still never developed as a unique character or personality. I mean, even silent characters you can gleen personality from, ie Samus, a Pikmin, Gordon Freeman, The Prince, but in those cases it comes from their uniqueness, irony, emotion, etc, and MC purposely has none of those traits. And yes, I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but I have to be honest, so I'll just let the thread take it course.

And Master Chief one of the best new characters? Sorry again, but what are you taking, and by how much have you exceeded the permitted dosage? Are people getting good games confused with good characters? Hell, yes. The only reason Master Chief doesn't rank as the biggest non-entity in this entire thread is because looking-for-sailors boy beats him to it by a head.
 
I agree neither Ryo nor Master Chief is one of the best new characters this gen. They are still lightyears better than Sam Fisher though, whom many seem to think highly of.
For future reference, a good character should not ruin the game he's in.

Ryo isn't all that bad, especially in Shenmue 2 when he isn't so uptight. But Ren overall is a better character than Ryo. If there ever is another Shenmue, Ren has to be in there.

Nathan Zachery (Crimson Skies), Bella Goth (Sims), the Katamari Damacy crew, and another vote for Viewtiful Joe.
 
Who the hell would say Kratos.

He's 2 sided, flat and your typical generic pissed off character.

Plus, not too mention he's a Quan Chi look-a-like.

With the exception of the Arbiter, I just can't understand how anyone can actually list the generic crap from Halo 1/2.

My picks:

- Raz and all of the Psychonauts crew
- King of All Cosmos and the Prince

Write a paper? I'm sorry if writing a legible response that some may be able to take and write an interesting reply to is a flaw of mine on this, a videogame forum, but hey, by all means enjoy your chuckle, and keep on trucking with those miraculous statements that you are so skilled at chiming in with, my friend. Believe me, the chuckle is reciprocated.

charachter is more than just what the charachters say and do... their design is just as important an aspect as anything else.. people are saying that Master Chief is a boring charachter and they are right.. he's just a guy in a suit that kills alot of stuff... Im just saying, Western designers arent the only creatively bankrupt ones... for instance, Dante is just as boring a charachter as Master Chief or Sam Fisher..

but most people on this forum seem to equate bad ass with good charachter. When I think of good charachters from the past I think of intresting ones.. Manny Calabera, most of the badguys from MGS, the cast from MDK2, Prof. K from the Jet Set games.. charachters that stood out.. often in both their design and their actions.. most of what is listed in this thread are emotionless drones that happen to be bad asses that spout cool one liners while blowing the fuck out of everything, or generic whiney bitches that occupy about 90% of JRPG's (the other 10% being made up of the strong silent type that allways seem to have a scar on them and some sort of big ass weapn)...

this generation has only had a handfull of good new charachters.. Pikmin are awesome, the Seaman were great, Steef from Oddworld is nice, Psychonauts are an intresting group of charachters, the Arbeter (SP?) from Halo 2 is a very intresting charachter.. there are more, but these stand out as intresting charachters, that are original and memorable, but these are ones that stand out to me.

And yet you can never come up with anything to challenge what I say, other than to say 'Oh, nobody cares! lol!,' or for that matter even give a reason to support your own opinion. I mean hey, I don't care if I'm the person everyone disagrees with, but at least I can explain why.

(Kinda a weird pick. He's great, in that he's basically you. You just grow to like him depending on how personally involved in the game you are. And all the Shenmue guys have awesome designs. Especially Ren and Lan Di.)

Oh, and if Sam Fisher and Master Chief aren't some of the most genericly designed characters ever. "We talk in low gravelly voices because we're tough. We shoot guns, toss bombs, and kill like bad asses. But it's no big deal, cause we do it for a living". The games are good, but jeez. Oh, and I'm also a fan of the art of Jak & Daxter, Oddworld games, and Psychonauts. Though I'm not sure on my favorites, if any. But in general I love a lot of their stuff.
 
Aoi? Cate Archer? Vic Fucking Viper? These are NOT new characters.

Has there been a character in a game, new or not, that hasn't been listed in this thread?
 
more votes for the girls.. seriously.. the game was decent but the main credit goes to the CG artists, not the game designers, because these chicks are hot (in a completely finctional and animated sort of way)

Well Andy,I don't know if you haven't noticed,but we're talking about fuckin videogame characters here :lol I'm not gonna write a page on why I like these characters, it's a collection of their looks,their actions, and their personality.
 
Every time I see that Psychonauts character, he freaks me out... Just plain creepy char design, IMO.

I always liked the design of I-Ninja. His character is kind of funny, too. I think he could have been something in the day when mascot-y characters meant something, and if the game wasn't so underwhelming. Basically, if everything was completely different.

If we're gonna list generic tough guys, we need Cortez from Timesplitters. But he's almost a joke character, so he's not as generic. I still hate him, though, 'cause he reminds me of Vin Diesel.

Anyway, my favorite new character this gen goes to, oh, let's say... Blinx. Having never played his games, I just want to commend the creators for this wonderful, satirical character.

I disagree. Aoi first appeared in 96 in VF3. That is not this generation. Even 98 when the DC was out in Japan is stretching it.
