I need 512m of PC 3200 ram for my Desktop PC. Do any of you smooth cats know of some nice deals around the net? What brand do you recommend?

So far I'm thinking of getting 512m of Kingston ram from New Egg. Price: $72.73 (shipping included).

Is that pretty much as good as it gets without getting generic crap?

That's a decent price. You may want to search around on pricewatch.com some, but all of the cheaper stuff is going to be semi-risky cheaper RAM. Stick with Mushkin, Crucial (Micron), Kingston, OCZ. Known, reliable brands.

Crucial is overpriced and overhyped, but certainly not the best.

Get some Geil from Newegg. Stay away from that Kingston crap.

The Value stuff is nice, and the Golden Dragons are awesome. I've had two Geil sticks running in dual-channel for close to a year now, good stuff.

When did Kingston turn to crap? They were among the best last time I checked (which admittedly was a long time ago lol).

Maybe I'm thinking of Kensington. Geil is better than both anyway. :D

Rancid: Pricewatch is OK, but you stand to get burned if you go with some of the smaller companies. Newegg is good, cheap enough, and hasn't burned me yet -- so I generally ignore Pricewatch if Newegg has what I want.

Yeah, I hate going to pricewatch. It's too hit or miss for my liking. Especially with something like Memory. Looks like New Egg wins so far. Plus with the sale going on today I can get excellent memory pretty damn cheap. Anyway, thanks for your help. Just wanted to see what you guys thought before jumping at the first offer I found.

I heard that RAM companies were investigated and fined for price fixing. I think Micron(Crucial) was one of them.

Dude, that's a great deal for Kingston. Remember, when asking for advice on the internet poeple will always naysay, and tell you that you can get a better deal elsewhere.
As a matter fo fact, i'm ordering that ram right now.

:lol

Sorry. I don't care much for low pricing on my RAM. I've found that the cheaper it is, the more likely it is to not work well. I know that the Geil stuff is a bit pricey, but it's not as bad as Corsair or some of the other top-tier brands. Perhaps not in this case, but generally, you get what you pay for.

I totally agree, but Kingston is not a bad brand.
The same ram at my local PC Club is $100+

Fry's has a similar stick of Kingston RAM for about $50 after a $25 rebate. It's 512MB PC3200 DDR.

You really can't go wrong with OCZ, Geil, Corsair, Kingston, etc if you're buying the right stuff. Most brands are okay.

You should take the time to check for compatibility with your motherboard though. While most PC3200 will work, there's some rare ocassions where certain sticks of RAM don't work when they should. For example, Abit's IC7 series have had frequent problems with Muskin.

No shit? I might just get that one too.

Sorry, it's actually $55 after rebate, but that's still a damn good deal.
