I moved to the States from England, and my current pair of glasses are about done. I have no idea on good deals or anything because I have no knowledge of the system here. I have no eye insurance, so I'm paying full price so I'm looking for the best deals. I've been quoted $60 at two local vision shops for an eye test, so I'm looking for a cheaper one and then hopefully taking my prescription to a place with good prices on frames. Any tips?

If you don't have insurance, your best bet may be to go to Wal-Mart. Some people would feel more comfortable not getting their exam done there, but having it done at a private place and then bring the prescription there to be filled. Wife and I went to Lenscrafters, the nice thing about their place is that the glasses were ready in an hour instead of days. Ours would have been $380 without insurance, but we didn't get the cheapest ones. With insurance, $40.

fashionable plastic frames with ridiculously cheap pricing on the lenses. you can request 5 frames to 'test' at home and mail back for free. alternatively, you can upload a picture and test the frames using their flash program.

Get a cheap eye test. You can possibly get a cheaper price than 60 at some of those optic offices inside a Sears or Walmart. If not 60 isn't bad. After that buy glasses off coastalcontacts.com. 35 bucks for a nice solid frame. 10 or 15 more for 60 pack of contacts.

The prices on Zennioptical.com are insane, especially as I was quoted $350 for a pair at PearleVision but it seems like such a crap shoot to buy them without seeing them on your face. As nice as a little graphic is of you virtually wearing them, it's not the same as actually seeing them on in real life...

I don't know where you're at but America's Best gives you two pair for $70 and includes the eye exam.

TBH, despite the namesake, they are not the best as far as frames, not even close actually, but if you want something cheap and hassle-free they might be an option. Honestly most of the chains like Lenscrafters, Pearle, etc will try and rake you over the coals. Local places are usually your best bet.

I got mine from Walmart for about $50. it was $25 for the frames, and $17.50 per lens with no special shit on it.

I have like a -7.00 though, so you'rs will probably be cheaper than that if you have better eyes than me.

If you're really strapped for cash on this matter, I wouldn't complain. I know plenty of people who have gotten glasses there and have been happy. You could buy 5 pairs if you weren't happy with how the first 4 looked and still save money.
