My picks:

1. Halo 2

The perfect sequel soundtrack. Halo 2 combines themes established in the original and amplifies them with new music, some of which evokes Horner's Abyss score only to suddenly switch to a combat theme. Easily the best video game soundtrack this year and one of the best of all time.

2. EverQuest II
B00028YSD0.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Hands down, the EQ II orchestral score is the best music ever done for a MMORPG. The score is like a combination of the Braveheart, Conan, and Lord of the Rings scores. Most of the time I just turn down the music on a MMO, but EQII's score is amazing. The music out in Thundering Steppes is would fit in well in the LOTR score, and the sound quality of a whole orchestra doing the score is amazing.

Not really applicable to the music, but Christopher Lee as Lucan D'Lere is one of the coolest villains in any video game. When you complete the Freeport quest to leave his city, Christopher Lee gives you a verbal beat down that is CLASSIC.

3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
B0002RQ3ES.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

The MGS3 score makes it the best movie I've seen in 2004. And that Bond theme song is awesome.

Where the fuck is Katamari Damacy in there?

Totally Batshit Insane

Oh.

katamari wins, of course.

halo 2 soundtrack is amazing. but does vai compensate for the presence of suckubus and that nu-metal band? HARD TO SAY.

my favorite mgs3 song is that remix of snake eater. "abstracted camouflage," i think. but it isn't even in the game. :(

Please don't attack me. I knew everyone would say Katamari before I came in this thread, but I found the music unique, but largely annoying, with the exception of the theme song (Katamari on the Rocks?), which I listened to about 100 times.

I concur with Halo 2. I wasn't expecting the quality going in, since I hadn't played Halo 1 and bought H2 on a whim, but the music really is phenomenal.

Baten Kaitos (though it's technically 2003), Katamari Damacy, Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes... ah hell, there are too many to choose just one.

:lol at everquest 2. The first thing i said when i heard this back in beta was that the music is way too overproduced. All they did was overdo and remix all the crappy old eQ music that was only memorable because you were forced to listen to it while enduring the retardedly long load-to-charselect screen (Well PC hardware sucked back then...) Then along comes the gamespot review with

" The game also delivers a sweeping symphonic soundtrack that captures the fantasy feel just right, but is maybe a little too overblown or repetitive for its own sake--when you're just walking around town trying to find a mender, it still sounds like you're weaving the greatest story ever told. "

Couldnt have been put any better. In my humble opinion, WoW's soundtrack is leagues better than EQ 2's. As is the gameplay. Oh snap? I can say that because i've played both games to max level. eq 2 sucks, their publisher can burn in hell.

I really don't get where the love for the Halo 2 soundtrack comes from. I was really dissapointed by it. I absolutely loved Halo 1's soundtrack, but with Halo 2, just about all of the music is the exact same or slightly remixed tracks from Halo 1, with one of the only new songs being the one we've already heard in the first trailer so long ago, so many times. And for christ' sake, they turned the fantastic Halo 1 theme into a fucking 80's butt rock anthem. And let's not even mention the friggin nu metal. Oh, the nu metal.

It kinda doesn't count considering it originally came out in 2002, but don't forget Technic Beat. Its soundtrack is HUGE and AWESOME, every last song.

Outrun 2 rocks really hard, also. You can't really go wrong with one of the best classic game soundtracks ever, re-made and remixed twice per song, with the classic original versions included as well.

Katamari is basically the best soundtrack ever. It transcends these measly "best of 2004" threads!

And Halo 2's music is a disgrace.

Samples would be wonderful (especially of MGS3... considering I've modeled my system sounds after the MGS series)

If someone could perhaps send me some non-torrent links for MGS3 songs (no spoilers, please, I don't play it until Dec. 25) that would be wonderful.

Metal Gear Solid 3. There is not one track that sounds crappy in the entire game. Awesome music...very awesome.

Another viral marketer reveals itself.

2nd the MZM nod.

1. Baten Kaitos
Tied for 2nd: Katamari Damacy, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
tied for 4th: Star Ocean, Tales of Symphonia

This really is not a debatable question. Anyone who hasn't played FABLE has absolutely no business posting in this thread.

Baten Kaitos (if you're counting it as 2004)
Katamari Damacy
err, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas... hullo, is anybody out there!?

Halo 2 is great, Katamari is funky, but the best game soundtrack of the year is this:

Keeping with Phantom Dust's theme of memories, the soundtrack remixes classical tunes with Aphex Twin-like beats. Some songs like Moonlight Sonata and Sakura Sakura don't go through much of a modern filter but are just rearranged tastefully.

Even Hollywood ego-manic Vincent Gallo provides a nice closing track. This soundtrack is simply fantastic.

Say what you want about Fable, but its soundtrack is excellent. It's my favorite of 2004 so far, but I have yet to play through MP2 and MGS3.

Halo 2's theme is very good, but the rest of the soundtrack isn't nearly as good. Katamari Damacy's soundtrack is like the game... pure joy and wackiness, just in musical form. Pikmin 2 probably has the best soundtrack that you didn't notice this year; it's low-key and doesn't intrude, but it complements the game perfectly.

Katamari Damacy rules purely because it starts with the catchiest song ever, and ends with the best mock-up of a Bruce Springsteen movie theme ever. The soundtrack compliments gameplay and changes accordingly with it.

Nr1 for me is Zelda: The Minish Cap. Very solid remixes with outstanding new ones.

I know you guys haven't played this yet... but I got to agree. Really nice to hear some songs mixed in from the last few Zelda games (OoT, WW) as well as... yes... remixed versions of the old songs.

I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of songs found in Minish Cap.
