Some years back, i talked about The Citadel here, a rare FPS made in Japan, which puts out practically none in the genre. This is the sequel that released at the start of this year.
The game follows the same premise of the original, but it also expands on some of its elements and fixes pretty much all of the issues the first had.
Enviroments now have some more variety to them, although they still follow a similar style.
I also didn't experience the crash fest i had with the first (it did crash once for unknown reasons but that is about it). Performance is also generally better, except for a few of the final levels that are quite big and have a lot going on with them.
As for the game itself, as expected from a sequel it features even more and bigger levels - around 30-ish proper levels, 50+ if you count "improper" ones like boss rooms and special maps - more guns, simple character upgrades, different armor and outfit types to wear, more characters to interact with during "down-time", a more well-developed (but still minimalistic) narrative and so on.
And of course, the gun-otaku part of the developer is even more evident now as the game features more gun fiddling than the first, with even a dedicated cocking button. And of course, the semi-realism of the guns also remains here, with simulated bullet-spread, fall and even decreasing speed with distance causing less damage to further away enemies.
The developer also ramped up the gore. If the previous one's intestine giblet fest wasn't enough, now you can even kick heads around and execute semi-dead enemies in whatever way you see fit;
Conclusion
The first game was an FPS with an interesting semi-realistic approach to the boomer-shooter genre. However, no matter how fun it was, there were clear unpolished and elements to it like the crashes, levels that sometimes felt too short and a last act that felt somewhat rushed. It was a game i'd recommend, but would put caveats.
With this new entry, all the potential of the first bloomed into it's utmost, presenting a great game that can not only stand besides others in the genre, but do so proudly, and honestly could get into many fans top lists (it's definitely in mine). If you're a FPS or boomer-shooter fan, do check it out.
