That's right folks, Naoki Urasawa of Monster, 20th Century Boys and Pluto fame has started his new manga: "Billy Bat". At a glance, it appears to be completly different from Urasawa's usual work (you know, the psychologic thriller type). It starts off looking more like an American comic cross between Micky Mouse and Batman. However, it turns out to be about the author of Billy Bat, Kevin Yamagata, who gets involved in a murder mystery set in 1949. That's the Urasawa I know.

No scanlations so far, but you just know it's going to be something to keep your eyes on.

Oh wow awesome. 20th Century Boys is my favorite manga. I'm still not done with Monster yet but it's really good too.

When I first saw the art style, I had the same reaction as many of those bloggers in the OP; that it might be a change of style for him, and perhaps not my sort of manga.

I am curious to see whether the story itself will be more in line with Monster or 20th Century Boys. To me, Monster had a more focused plot, did a much better job explaining the motives of the villain(s) and convincingly developing their characterization, had a relatively smaller cast [compared to 20CB] and slower pace that let it do a better job developing the secondary characters, and an ending that made sense. On the other hand, 20th Century Boys was much more exciting; it moved quickly, jumped often between points in time, introduced characters often, and it was never slow; something was always happening. There was also significantly more action, and the science fiction elements let it do things that Monster couldn't do.

20th Century Boys is one of the best thing ever, I think Urasawa will never top it (it's too personal and passionate), but new works from him are always welcome.

Latest scanlated chapter is 55 I believe. It's not yet finished, but it does seem to be nearing the end.

Urasawa has really become the modern-day "Godfather of Manga"~

If it has Urasawa's name on it, it's mine~ No need to even consider whether the premise would interest me. I know it will. ^o^

His narratives always have a way of drawing you into his world
