Biomutant Releasing May 25th PC, Xbox, PS4

Despite not launching next gen pretty good darn looking game but the story, characters are unknown to me so just gotta see a trailer or two.

Whoa this is actually coming out! That's incredible I hope it's worth the wait.

Also really hoping they include a next Gen update.. Not encouraged by the Xbox one and PS4 only listing in 2021

I have thought this game has looked fun from the first time I saw it. Can't wait to play it on GamePass.

Wow, took them long enought. It have being a time since I last heard of this game. But I'm happy for them.

Lets see how it fairs.

I liked the premise for this game from it's first announcement, not sure what to expect now after such a long dev time, hope it turns out good.Wonder if I'll have a PS5 by then, lol.

Yeah, this is worse than last gen when everything was cross-gen. Now they are just making PS4 and Xbox One games knowing they're backwards compatible

But until there's engine technology that really harnesses next-gen (and it will take new things coming up still like huge arrays of virtualized geometry in UE5 that will mark the divide,) that's kind of a good thing IMO.

Unless there's something that the game can do with a next-gen build that can't be done elsewhere, it makes sense to optimize for framerate and provide the best texture flexibility system. (They're not even needing to do a "texture pack" like you used to on the old consoles because the textures are already highly detailed, you just need better hardware to make more passes and apply cleaner filters and smoothly manage a wide range of LOD.) It's the same engine running on everything from phones to next-gen hardware, it's the same development suite that kicks out homemade 2D platformers or AAA blockbusters, it's a lot of the same general architecture of hardware (a few more "cores" here and there) with APIs to make what was once complicated/specialized now essentially standardized. Having separate builds for different machines and totally custom development efforts is not as needed as it once was; you can still get a benefit of a small team optimizing for hardware, but the base effort of making a game now is making the game, not making a version of the game.

So better that a game is made so that the best possible version is on the improved hardware, the past-gen version is what it is, the store shelves aren't clogged with two copies of the same game (although I guess we don't have to worry about "store shelves" anymore...), and there's no confusion or lying that a game is a "next-gen title" when it's really just a past-gen title with a quick new coat of paint. Don't need to spend an extra $10 on "hi-rez" textures that are already on the disc.

(How we used to argue...)

I get what you're saying, that if developers don't embrace next-gen, we may not see the fruits of next-gen because we're so hamstrung by past-gen. For one thing, though, that was never happening with BioMutant anyway; it was always a past-gen game (they wanted it out a year or two ago), it apparently has a small team, it's made for this spec on this engine and "going next-gen" wasn't a real option. B, the framerate and texturing/filtering improvements have been great in this gen's games (though I'm with you in enjoying new consoles much, much, much more when there were launch products that redefined what videogames looked and played like ... it's sad that we're feeling right now like we just bought PS4 Pro-Pro and Xbox One X-X instead of "true" next-gen boxes..) But C, this cross-gen won't last forever. I know there are X million number of PS4s and XBox Ones out there, but old consoles always fade faster than people know; already game publishers are seeing indicators that titles like Hitman 3 will do a majority of sales on next-gen hardware, despite the hardware shortages and the smaller install base. That's the active audience. Developers will delve into next-gen harder and harder, in time. In the meantime, though, there isn't a lot to the job of "next-gen game developer" versus "multiplatform game developer".

Biomutant is being released the right way for this generation, IMO, and I'll be fun to play this PS4 game on a PS5.

People complaining about no PS5/XBX: the game was always PS4/XB1. On top of that, the team isn't big. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least enhancements if not next gen versions.

Can't wait! Recently I've had the most fun & enjoyment out of AA games more than anything, so I'm looking forward to this a lot.
