CNN: DEVELOPING STORY

Birmingham, England, police evacuating the city after intelligence suggested some type of threat, the switchboard operator said.

Sky News have uncomfirmed reports of controlled explosions,
no cars allowed past city's ring road.

Worrying. I'm just about to go into Liverpool..

Press conference in 15 minutes? They said this quite a while ago.. nothing yet.

My taxi isn't coming :( assholes. Gonna be midnight by the time I get into town. Thats two hours at the bar, 1 hour after that then home.

Yeah, the city centre is blocked off. It's 20 mins from my house (I'm a B'ham hometowner), so things are a little freaky. Being the second city things are a little skittish since Thursday obviously, so this sort of thing was sadly inevitable :(
Hopefully its just a scare... my sister's just outside of town right now... :-s

Well Birmingham is Britain's second city, so a likely target. What's next? Manchester? Edinburgh? The former's a little too close for comfort for me.

That article on the BBC says that the controlled explosions were of items that ended up being non lethal. So I guess they found a bookbag or something, contained it, blew it up, and all that was in there was books, for example. Is this evacuation still going on then? Meaning there might be more "threats" that they are looking for?

Hopefully this is just an idiotic hoax.

And if that turns out to be the case i hope they find the git who did it and phone his house saying "GET OUT OF THE HOUSE, THERES A BOMB" then club him in the face as he tries to leave, drag him back into the house, and repeat until he can no longer count to 10 without the aid of flipcards.

It's all still blocked off -- but I'd imagine they're still searching the place high and low, even if it's a hoax they'll be very very slow in pulling out the police and unblocking the area. Things were bad after Thursday, now it's going to be a lot worse because of tonight.

I thought this was in regards to Birmingham, Alabama in which case I was about to celebrate.

I thought the same thing because of hurricane Dennis (or whatever it's called). I have to head back to Huntsville in a couple of days.

yah, misleading thread title. I thought it related to Birmingham, AL due to the hurricane. The reality (Birmingham England) is a much more severe scenario.
