Black Friday 2015 Retail Musings

People should keep in mind that PS4 boxes are smaller than Xbox One boxes so they're probably more stocked to begin with.

I'm more of the assumption that the PS4's will be $299 through Cyber Monday. So Sony definitely needed to have shipped the stock for that.

I think the thing is that PS4 is just Uncharted, which probably isn't a huge system seller, while XB1 had Fallout and TR.

Sony did the same thing last year. They bundled it with something forgettable while MS had Unity.

Not sure why Sony does this.

I should also say... Best Buy and Target were very calm affairs with very few people buying electronics...

Bath & Body Works? Fuck that store... It's crazy in here! People fighting over buy 3, get 3 free soap... WTF...

We've had our retail buddies tell us that both consoles are selling well at the $299 price point.

Don't let GAF fool you into thinking the general public cares about anything more than just the price.

Went to Target/Walmart here in Chicagoland, Target was wiped clean of WiiUs and X1s. Walmart was wiped out of Splatoon, but everything else was in.

I picked up a N3DSXL for my cousin as a college present (she just started), plenty of those available.

I felt like it was rather quiet, though, but the weather here is shitty today. Maybe its that.

Our district's stock of the cheap xb1 bundles is largely depleted, but we've got plenty of the uncharted bundles left, because Sony sent us a ton right before the weekend. Then we've got all these fucking tomb raider bundles people keep looking at like they're plague ridden or something. It's stupid.

Basically, last night and today have seen both systems sell really well. Definitely good. But why didn't ms send us more inventory of the cheap bundles? I don't get it. Sony stocked us up for their entire weekend.

(Sigh) is it closing yet?

How was it compared to last year? You feel like this BF will be bigger or smaller for the consoles.

I went to Best Buy last night as I did last year, and what I saw was the polar opposite of what I saw last BF. Last year Best Buy was swamped. This year it wasn't at all. Last year the Xbox One bundles were flying out of the store, but this year it was the Uncharted bundles flying out, meanwhile the sad pile off Wii Us and Halo 5 XB1 bundles sat virtually untouched. The 299 Gears pile appeared to have been hit hard though.

Yeah, just giving out a theory. Who knows what they are selling like.

I don't think Sony had GTA V bundle on Black Friday. I think it was just TLOU. And tlou came out something like 6 months prior, and was a remaster. While XB1 had essentially a brand new AAA game. So yeah....

Well I ordered from Best Buy last night. Kicking myself for not getting GCU when I could have for the cheaper price. :x Using it for Nintendo games would be a godsend.

Got Interstellar and Mad Max for $8 since Amazon has failed me so bad this year on movies and new games.

Then got those Dragon Quest and Tomb Raider deals from amazon for the cheaper prices. Would have gotten Batman but I already own it and wasn't interested in the season pass content.

After 3rd dinner and hitting the sack, I woke up today to go to Gamestop and see what they had. Lots of Pre-Owned games ripe for the taking with their buy 2 and get 1 free but the prices were bad as always. Killzone and Knack were tempting but possible future PSN+ games I tell you!

I was actually interested in DW Gundam #1 just for some mindless fun but the other 2 games I didn't really want and would probably never play. Ended up not buying anything but it was pretty busy in there. Should have possibly grabbed the Move Controllers or something since those are buy 2 and get 1 free for accessories too. Lots of old PS3 games that are decent are under $10 so stop by if you wanna pad your collection. All the good RPGs and JRPGs are over $25 usually though. :x Watch Dog at $13 was tempting but I resisted since it will hit $10 next year most likely along with AC: Black Flag.

After leaving GS, I went to my local Walmart, it wasn't too busy but the games and blu-ray section they had at the front was stripped bare of the good stuff lol. Went to the back where the electronics section was and looked around. Got the 3 month PSN+ for $10 x2 for half a year of sub. Hopefully next month December has a good deal for the year if not the 3 month again. Looked around and besides some blu-rays being under $10, nothing really grabbed at me. I already got all the Blu-rays I wanted besides Aladdin (Which I'm salty at Amazon for selling out so fast). So I went to the Ice Cream section and got my favorite Blue Bunny Ice Cream and headed out. Didn't really notice 1 console selling better than the other. Just some N3DSs and a PS4 or XBone here or there.

Biggest steal was the $2.50 popcorn chicken they had going on at the front near the register. Good snack/lunch for me! :D Overall its been a disappointing Black Friday this year. Would have been better if I got GCU from Best Buy and bought from them.

I still want Mad Max and DBZ Budoten. But I don't wanna pay over $24 for Mad Max. Might end up pulling the trigger tonight on Mad Max from Best Buy for $25 unless the BST thread has someone selling Mad Max (PS4) for $20. I'm thinking of buying DBZ using BB's Eshop card deals so I could save about $6 lol.

Oh I also bought SAO: Hollow Fragment from PSN, might grab Transformers too with the discount code.

I went to Target last night while our turkey was in the oven. It was busy, but not crazy. People were being pretty friendly with each other. I ended up getting a 55" Samsung tv that was $250 off, but this morning when I went to go set it up I pulled it out of the box and saw that the screen is smashed. I think it might have been hit by a cart or something before I picked it up. Hopefully getting an exchange won't be a total pain in the ass. With my luck I'll be stuck with a bunch of store credit or something.

In the hour I was at my local Best Buy, I saw a pile of 20 Uncharted bundles disappear, while an equally sized XB1 pile went untouched.

Poor Tomb Raider.

What was located in the vacant area? Were they more Tomb Raider bundles or something else?

I was at WM, Target, and BB last night. Mostly people getting the Uncharted bundle and some people getting One's as well. I seriously didn't see a single person with a Wii U at any of them.

My local Wal-Mart was pretty much picked to the bone in terms of... well, everything by the game I got there early this morning. There was probably one PS4 and Xbox bundle sitting out, but even the games were picked apart pretty hard.

Target was pretty calm for the most part. No PS4 or XBox bundles left, but they did have a few Wii U bundles in the back room and I picked one up. I also picked up a Zero Suit Samus amiibo because I'm insane.

Gamestop was also pretty calm. Only picked up Bayonetta 2, Shadow of Mordor, and Infamous SS as part of the buy two get one free sale. A hell of a lot of people were trading in last gen games and systems, however.

I went to Best Buy, Walmart, and target (in that order) starting at around 7:30pm last night. PS4 seemed to be the far and away winner with the most people holding one or asking about one. I saw a few people with the Wii U bundle and no one with the Xbox One Gears bundle. The Uncharted PS4 and Gears Xbox One bundles were in plenty supply - Wii U seemed in limited stock.

I got Until Dawn from Best Buy. Very strange layout this year - their sale signage didn't "pop" from their regular signage, so it wasn't good for browsing. Until Dawn just had a normal price tag in the PS4 section that said 19.99.

Walmart had a handful of modern Mario amiibo left, so I picked one up. Also got two Disney compilation books for my new daughter. Walmart's parking lot was only half full and outside of electronics, the store was totally manageable.

Target was insane. Too many kids running around in between moving carts. It was a zoo. Picked up 2 Disney princess dresses and a "touch sensitive" play station for the daughter. No gaming items purchased here.

I stand corrected.

Hmm, but still, I think a new Assassins game probably had more pull than those 2 games.

This year seems worse though. Like, Uncharted collection bundle? Seems pretty weak. But maybe the pull of $299 might offset that.

I think Sony will still win Nov NPD purely from those Star Wars and COD bundles.

Went out looking for Bloodborne last night, no luck at Best Buy, went to the other location which was fairly close and they had some copies of the game. Went to a mall this morning and bought more goodies. Overall, there were the usual crowds but nothing too uncivilized or chaotic.

Saw a lot of people buying Wii U/PS4/XB1 bundles, those seemed like pretty popular deals. Surprisingly, my faith was restored and there were actually quite a bit of those Splatoon and Smash bundles being bought. NBA and Assassins Creed seemed like popular buys out of what was being bought

Price is what matters on Black Friday. Your average/casual consumer is not going to care about what comes with it.

My sources are telling me the Wii U won black Friday today, outselling all other Nintendo consoles. The N64 didn't even sell 1/10th as much.

Both $299 bundles (PS4 and XB1) are arguably bundled with weak games. But people buy them with Battlefront or COD for $349.

Sorry, but Unity ws a fucking mess at launch...and to compare that to the bundles offered by Sony. Nah.... the Xbox bundles were weak as fuck.

I think the price point is/was much more important than the game bundled with the system.

I bet that a 269/279 ps4 with knack would sell better than a 299 Halo 5 XB1.

People just buy the cheaper one and add the hot games they want (this year being blops 3, battlefront and fallout 4)

My takeaway from looking at the sales charts at Amazon and the number of Uncharted consoles being sold at Target and Best Buy is that my goal of buying an Uncharted Collection code for under 20 dollars is going to be realized soon.

PS4's and XB1's were on sale everywhere. Out of all the high street places I went into, they had the same games reduced pretty much, Uncharted collection, Batman AK, far cry 4, Halo MCC, Gears UE, until dawn. I didn't see a single reduced Wii U all day, and the Nintendo selection of reduced stuff was pretty poor in general.

Thursday - 9pm-10pm -

Walmart - Went for $15 DriveClub and $10 PS+. Everything was cleaned up the fuck up. Got lucky and found a lone, out of place $25 copy of Splatoon. Saw Smash/Splatoon Wii U bundles all over the place, but people were definitely buying them.

Fry's Electronics - I got a $39 PS+ card

Target Website - Saw Wonderful 101 for $29.99. Opted to wait for Cyber monday %15 off.

Friday - 9am, 11am

Gamestop - Got a New copy of Freedom Wars for $5.39

Walmart - All the movies and games were mixed the fuck up in baskets. Some other dude and his little brother/kid found the last goddamn copy of Driveclub at the bottom of some basket. Pissed for like an hour and a half.

Target - Oh fuck W101 is sold out online...and in all the stores in my area...

Ebay - Made offer on a used copy of W101... EDIT: Offer accepted

Verdict: Not Bad.

PS4 vs Xb1 Console Warz verdict?: IDGAF, I wish I could find a $35 copy of bayonetta that isn't an opened Gamestop Copy with a fucking sticker on it. I wish all this shit would be PC digital so I can get everything in a fucking 1-2-3 click steam sale.

fuck

At Walmart last night I saw an equal share of Xbox and PS4 in carts, not any WiiU. I could not actually find the displays though. I walked through the game section and the cabinets were empty for consoles. I assume they were on a pallet somewhere that I did not see. Picked up 4 3-month PS+ cards . . . oh and The Last Star fighter on bluray for $4.

All these anecdotes are making me feel sorry for Tomb Raider. Does no one care? :(
It released at a really bad time. Even if it was completely multiplat at launch I doubt it would have done well when thrown against Fallout, Battlefront and CoD. I definitely plan to buy it but at this point I just bought Halo and Fallout and might as well wait until I have time and RoTR is on sale.

At Fry's, I saw a few guys buying Uncharted bundle PS4s. It was pretty quiet this year overall, the line to get in the store wasn't very long at all. I found the router I wanted, grabbed a few other things, and got out of there in less than an hour.

You don't need sales when you have Microsoft's passion.

Here in Orange County in Southern California...

Target: Last night (around 10PM PST), we went just to look around at the mayhem. Wii U was completely sold out, and I've noticed several people asking for one. The associate claimed that they brought in an unusually large shipment of them and they all sold out. Some people had some XB1's and some peope had the Uncharted PS4 bundles. There were like 2 PS4's left, and about a dozen XB1's. X360's were sold out, and there were plenty of PS3's.

Walmart: A complete sell-out of the Mario Maker Wii U bundles, and there were no Wii U's or XB1's left (I went in the mid-morning, not overnight). A few PS4's laying around. Some people in the store had some PS4's though. One guy had an XB1. I'd bet it was chaos last night.

Best Buy: PS4's almost sold out, just a few left. XB1's left were a few Tomb Raider bundles, but I'd bet it sold okay. Wii U had a few Mario Kart bundles, no Smash Bros. / Squid bundles left.

Another Target: No Wii U's available, no PS4's available, a few XB1's available.

Wii U seems to be selling well, though I can't imagine a huge increase in sales compared to last year, since I'd bet Nintendo is playing it safe regarding shipments. Even if they are selling out in some places, their shipments are likely not that large. Hopefully the Tomb Raider bundles do well though.
