Alec Turner was born on August 10, 1845 into slavery at the Gouldin plantation in Port Royal, Virginia.
Alec Turner's story starts around 1800 with his grandmother, an Englishwoman, sailing off the coast of Africa when her ship is wrecked and her husband dies. The woman was saved by a chieftain's son and later the two fell in love had a son of their own, named Alexander.

Alexander was captured and sold as a slave in the 1820s to a Virginia farmer. He married a Cherokee Indian and, in 1845, they had a son named Alec Turner.
Alec had learned how to read at the age of 8 from the grand daughter of the Plantation owner. As was the terrible custom, Alec was severely beaten when it was discovered. But Alec did not let this stop him. Nothing would stop him from reaching his goals of freedom. At the plantation, one man made his life a living hell. But it wasnt the plantation owner that had been so cruel.

It was a fellow slave that had been appointed as overseer of the more than 2000 slaves at the plantation, due to his devotion to his master.

Still, Alec worked hard, waiting for his chance at freedom. As the Civil War ignited, Alec's chance had come. He escaped his plantation and joined the First New Jersey Volunteer Calvary as an assistant cook. He went on to fight in the battle of Bull Run, one of the first major conflicts of the war. He was wounded, but kept fighting with his fellow soldiers afterwards. All the while, he plotted his revenge. in the spring of 1863, Alec guided his fellow union soldiers to the Gouldin Plantation. The overseer heard the troops approaching and leaning his head out of the window, called "Who's there?"
Alec replied "This is me! This is Alec! I'm going to shoot you!"

After achieving his revenge, Alec continued to fight with his fellow soldiers until the end of the war. He then settled in Grafton, Maine where he made enough money to purchase 150 acres of land and settled down with his wife Sally.

Damn he was fucking. Anyway that's an incredible story. Can't imagine the environment that led to the overseer being such a tyrant to his own people but of course you see the effects still today.

Wow, I'd never heard of this guy before! Thanks for sharing, OP. This guy lived the life of a hero and managed to get a happy ending. Hell yeah.

Not included in the OP, but he also apparently hauled a 150 pound barrel of flour 3 miles uphill on a bet. The winner got the flour for free.
