Blow me away graphically, GAF!

As in an expression, a metaphore for current visual next-generation consoles, graphical gaming goodness. ;)

I have since long ago fought a tumor that has made my senses ultra-sensitive (search it up, I duscussed it a couple times). Now it is melted, and I am very slowly getting back on my feet, too slowly in fact. Something however made me change my mind today I was like, tired of not playing games! Because since my retinas' state degraded, I had not played a single videogame, and barely witnessed voluntarily any video, since september 2003, since I played Soul Calibur 2 for the Xbox.

Today, I was looking at the HDTV with my consoles, at the set with the cables and the game collection I was building up, I was looking at the eternally blank Samsung boob tube, and that was one time too many, I guess. So I looked over at my bookshelve and said, I want to witness graphical marvels now. So I took Ninja Gaiden, put it in my Xbox, hooked up in progressive scan with the component cables and all, with the TV closed. I remembered how to go through the menus and load a save that someone else had done (the kind of thing I had to do for way too long), with the screen still shut down. And then, I was there, with the huge Xbox controller in my hand and I accidentaly opened my HDTV. It's a CRT and the flicker they make previously totally killed my eyes. But, it was somehow bearable, how amazing!

And wow, I could witness, and play a videogame for a few minutes, for the first time since one and a half years ago! I'd wondered for so long, what are the best looking console titles available today? Ninja Gaiden definitely was one, one of the best looking Xbox titles still today. So I decided to turn off the HDTV and to barely play a graphically top of the line game for GameCube and PlayStation 2. Of course, it was easy to choose Resident Evil 4 as for the GameCube. With the TV shut, I remembered how to enable progressive scan, I remembered on how to go through menus blindly, and I loaded up a gamesave that somebody else had made. I was into the game. I was anxious, because RE4 the first time I saw it in motion, I was sure (and I always remained that way), from the start that Capcom would make a gaming masterpiece. I could not believe it when I saw the reviews, I was right! And then I was looking for a very short time, at the game in motion, that I controlled. Holy crap, what a beautiful fucking game. I spoiledmyself the storyline because I wanted to witness as much as I could about the game without being able to play any of it. It's incredibly stylish and detailed, and well-animated. I was frowned to have to turn the GameCube and the TV off, man I wish I could play that game in a single row. I then promptly hooked up properly my PSTwo in Component and wanted to play Gran Turismo 4, but then I remembered I had loaned it to someone. So there, I could finally witness, and even play a little, real console games, on a CRT :)

But, as I can for now only take it in slight doses and I need not to abuse it, these doses better be the best they can. So what I mean is, I want you to suggest me the most beautiful games that next-gen consoles (PS2, GameCube, Xbox) have to offer.

To me, it's important for the game to be beautiful from a technical AND artistical point of view. Because I dunno, I looked at Ninja Gaiden, I tought I would be fucking amazed, but even if I admired the high-poly count, the stunning animation, details, I was like "isn't there more to it?", but there is no. And I saw all that was released before september, and read the reviews, I know Ninja Gaiden is technically more impressive than RE4. RE4 however, I liked the style much more. So I don't know, maybe I have been spoiled by PC Games screenshots. PC Games as much as I'd want to, I cannot play, they require me to be too close to the screen, and I still have inherent presbitism. Same thing for video clips, I only archive them, I can't bear them (I then cannot watch DVD clips), they make me feel dizzy, only fluid console games can do. I want to see the best that Xbox, GameCube, and especially PS2 has got to offer. I mainly reviewed PS2 games before and they definitively improved, I am anxious to see them in motion. I have many games, original games, that I buy to make a gigantic backlog when I can game without any pain at all, so I prepare for that day I hope will come soon. I have many games you may suggest me, I prefer artistical over technical, I think I want to see Paper Mario 2 next. For PS2 well, as for recent games I have Xenosaga Episode 2, and Tekken 5. I guess a fighting game never is as complex to render beautifully as say a 3D action game. Xbox, I need to see Halo 2, but I feel I will be really disappointed, as I usually loathe console FPS games. Golgeneye I loved tough, but the original Halo, I did not loved as much as virtually everyone else did.

The funniest thing is all this time I tought I'd become a terrible gamer, and then I realised the difficulty of the first game I played (Ninja Gaiden). I don't remember where I was at all, but amazingly I was barely touched and I seemed to make it through the level with ease. Most of all, it makes my hands (filled with dyskinesia) prompt again, it sharpens my reflexes, in a sense, it helps curing me! :)

That is a challenge I deem quite appropriate for GAF. Are you ready to take it? Suggest me the games that will make me amazed at the power of the consoles! :)

And to AtomicShroom if he posts in this thread:

1-Your Splinter Cell Chaos Theory game is not even released yet, and I loathed the graphics since I first saw the game in motion at Ubisoft Montreal, too much lightning and shadows for my tastes

2-Yes you think Conker Reloaded is the best looking game evar, but furs don't necessarily make for a pretty game

The answer is Pikmin 2, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil, Viewtiful Joe, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and Otogi 2. You don't seem to like technically impressive graphics, so I'll leave others out.

On the PS2 there's ICO, ZOE2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Katamari Damacy.

Heck, just buy those. You should be busy for a while.

Otogi 2 (XB)
Resident Evil 4 (GC)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Zone of the Enders 2 (PS2)
Oddworld Stranger (XB)
Chronicles of Riddick (XB)
Panzer Dragoon 0 (XB)
Wrekless (XB) (game sucks but looks great)
Jak or Ratchet series (PS2)
Gran Turismo 4 (PS2)
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (PS2) (screw you, I think the scope of the world makes up for the rest)
The Factor 5 Star Wars games (GC) (can't remember the names...hated those games)
Ace Combat 4/5 (PS2)

You're not gonna get better than THESE awesome graphics:

Oh, I do, it's just that most of the time, artistically impressive graphics prevail, but I like tech demos too in the end.

I have had ICO for a while (good choice), Beyond Good and Evil, I have Metal Gear Solid 3. I knew someone was going to mention Katamari, I guess I should consider it. ZOE2 I played, it was amazing, but I am more interested in games I have never played. Pikmin I always hated, so I don't think I would really like. Prince of Persia, well that's good too. Paper Mario 2 was in my thread, Otogi 2, maybe if it's bargain-bin priced (it should be). Viewtiful Joe, I barely missed to play it when i got it, I have the game and will have a look at it.

Oh yeah, Jet Set Radio Future and Panzer Dragoon Orta. Must plays.

Played them two. Thanks, but better luck next time. You reminded me good titles tough. :)

Have you seen/played The Wind Waker? You can't get more artistic than that.

Of course I did, but I want to experiment console games released after I could not play them at all (september 2003 and beyond).

Mercenaries has a similar scope, more NPCs per block, and looks a lot better than GTA:SA, imo. As for which version looks better, I didn't see much of a difference between the PS2 and Xbox iterations.

Multiplatform:
Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Fight Night Round 2
Fight Night

Xbox:
Ninja Gaiden
Panzer Dragoon
Halo 2
Halo: Combat Evolved
Oddworld Stranger
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
ESPN NFL 2k5

PS2:
Gran Turismo 4
Ico
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Solid 3

Gamecube:
Resident Evil 4

RE4 in my thread so I beheld it, GT4 too, I will eventually. Wreckless, I played it, it's amazing indeed. Oddworld, since I don't like EA, I will wait for a price drop or a cheap used version. Riddick. I heard about it, but I think it would be much more impressive on PC. GTA:SA, I played it all, great game I know the world is huge but that is not really what I'm looking for, thanks anyway. Ace Combat 4 I have played, beautiful game, AC5 well I never liked simulators such as these, I will pass these out. The Star Wars Factor 5 games, I played the first it looks great, maybe the second one if it is inexpensive.

I played the first games of Jak and Ratchet series, I know it has changed, Jak is indeed at least a great tech demo I should look forward to. Ratchet, I dunno if the step is that much apparent, but that should be great nonetheless.

Yes, but is it really a beautiful game to look at? It seems more like a good action game with great gameplay to me. Still if it's solid and well-polished it could fit my bill. Maybe I will think about the Xbox version when the price drops.

And come to think of it, I pretty much know of all the major console titles released, I'd prefer comments on fewer games, and why they are good to play and look at, that would be more useful to me than just names

It's a shame you don't like Pikmin. Pikmin 2 is a very artistically diverse and lush, beautiful game.

I dunno, RTSes and consoles for me it's like a big no-no. Maybe when the price drops significantly.

Mercenaries has some beautiful landscapes.

Jesus. It's comments like that that sum up everything thats wrong with *gamer's* these days. Man, does anyone think that EA, M$, Sony, hell even my beloved Commodore :lol
gives a fuck about us other than as consumers to splash our cash?

So I ask you now:- How many folks out there has missed a great game just because of backward-ass shit like the above? How many Xbots have not played Metroid Prime? How many PSDoozers haven't played Ninja Gaiden? How many Nintedrones haven't played MGS3? Shit... it's all about the games regradless of *everything* else, EA included

By the way Stranger is as good a looking game you will see this gen :)

Oh I know, see i own the three consoles, I'm a platform agnostic! But you saw all EA did? That prevailed upon supporting innovative projects and Oddworld Inhabitants, which I really did want to do. The game does well on it's own, so I guess that's not a decision that is that bad. Geez, I'm going to have the same problem when I will want to play Battlefield 2. :(

When I saw that discovery channel special, I just knew this game was gonna rock on that specific scale, just like with RE4, I like, felt it. :)

Gosh, your post makes me think of Metroid Prime 2, I have it, what's GAF's verdict on it?

My verdict is kinda like Halo2 to Halo - in some ways better, in some ways not so good - it doesn't have anything as impressive as Phendrana Drifts from a level point of view, but I felt on the whole it was 'tighter' gameplay wise, with better boss battles.

Otogi and Otogi 2. Both games have beautiful art and incredible special effects, with the second being a little more over the top in the latter respect. Nothing I have played on any of the three current consoles really compares to either in terms of pure eye candy.

It's comments like that that sum up everything thats wrong with *gamer's* these days

Waiting to get a game used or at a lower price is bad? If I was that patient I wouldn't have so many games purchased at full price that are still in plastic.

Mooreberg:-
Waiting to get a game used or at a lower price is bad?

Nope, but doing that puposefully because it's an EA|MS|Sony|Whatever game IS...

Missing out on a game because you can't afford it is fine; missing out on a good game because of some daft prejudice, EA boycott's included is folly

But that was a heartbreak between Inhabitants and them! Plus the game sold well in the end. :(

Oddworld Stranger is the best looking platformer on any console imo.
Half Life 2 is a must on PC. Those Striders are amazing
God of War is beautiful and is coming out shortly
Both Prince of Persia games are purty but the first is better than the second.
GT4 and RE4 are musts, but you know that already. :)
Otogi 1 and 2 are gorgeous.

And finally its good to hear you are feeling better.

2D next-gen games ???? there is no such thing.

But...... you can still go back to the ol' Neo Geo to bring out the best 2D (this side of Third Strike)

Ok, another dose I was able to take. These won't last long, it'ts not as much me getting better, as much as something inherent I discovered that made me somewhat tolerate CRTs. Maybe one more and I will give it a rest. I'd need LCD, but I am all out of money and I want to wait until the standards settle, SED also. Anyway.

I played (again for very short periods, and without sound) Halo 2, Sly 2 Band of Thieves, and Metroid Prime 2, one game for each console. I also quickly looked at the cinematics of Metal Gear Solid 3. Well, these are all sequels, I wanted to somehow look on how they looked when compared to their original. All very good game. I am extremely surprise, you don't ever lose the ability to play games, or you gain it back very quickly. Sharpening my reflexes, learning as much as I could about games, and practicing on the controlers made of me a good player. I kick ass, I can't believe it! I want to play until I die! :)

There pretty much looked all the same. Halo 2, well, a beautiful game, but it appears more of the same and overrated to me, of course. Metroid Prime 2, same thing, however I liked the environments much more. Sly 2 was however much improved, tough I'd have really liked to hear the voice actors, it's an incredible kiddy games, a genre I kinda like. And MGS3... what can I say? I love incredible stories, and it looks simply mesmerizing! And just for fun I said to myself, I will try again the game I never got tired of, Virtua Fighter series, specifically, Virtua Fighter 4. Hooked up with my newly acquired Tekken arcade stick (the controls are godly!). I also tried VF2 on my old Saturn with the gamepad, and they don't make controllers like these anymore, best pad for fighting games ever. I tried some of my old favorite characters, still had has much of a blast as ever, I used Wulf, I remembered all his wrestling moves I used all the time, it was so much fun. I appeared to even have bettered, I was able to specualte on every move amazing.

Well, my eyes started to kill me, So I was about to shut off the Saturn, then I saw Wulf winning, as he uttered his crazy scream of victory "Ahou!" I had heard so many times befores. I felt really awkward, I wanted to play this for hours on end but I had to listen to my reason and not abuse it. Seeing Wulf, and me being forced to shut off the saturn, my HDTV, looking at the blank screen, I am fucking tired of seeing it. Ah well. Maybe someday I will look it up for hours without pain at all, gaming nirvana day. I want it to come soon, I am tired of pain and theory. :(

In the end, I think I'm not impressed with hot graphics anymore. I think this endless fetichism on graphical perfection has got to stop. I think games should be made in order to grow up well; Ocarina of Time's graphics has aged horrendously (as opposed to A link to the past in 2D), but the game is still maybe the best ever. What a piece of art, I want to play it again. But most of all, even beyond gameplay, I think what games need now is a greater sense of storytelling. Because in the end, what I want to play are not even the games with the mechanics I adore, it's the kickass stories, characters, the unique storytelling way games have to provide to tell a good story. What I wanted the most was playing MGS3 and even more, I wanted to experiment RE4 for the kickass story! I never liked Resident Evil for the mechanics, but for the characters, story, and the way it was integrated into the game that changed our industry. MGS3, well, it's a bit too much movie-centric for my tastes, but it still looks jaw-dropping. I'd like to see more new strong heroes, lovable losers, lovable villains. I think games miss that and heroes are way too much unidimensional. We need to identify to these: I wanted to be Tex Murphy, Manny Calavera, and Jim Raynor again, not a superhero! That might well be my personal tastes, but I think games right now need to sharpen their way to tell a tale in the unique way they can provide with interactivity. I still want to learn as much as possible. I read that Kojima was influenced by the Famicom murder case game by Dragon Quest's creator (which I also absolutely love), I think that might be the first game I'd want to play when cured, it seemed revolutionary for it's time.

I want to create stories. In fact, while relaxing, I totally feel like creating a text-based adventure game, so it's all story (and text), and I think I'd have some incredible ways to revolutionize this dead genre and experiment, and enjoy what I have. Plus with the means I have I could! I have a great imagination, I'm thinking of concepts, but I want to finetune it until absolute perfection. If you ever play it, I hope you'll enjoy it and I will have achieved my goals.

May this neurophatical pain go away, I want to play day and night and rise from my grave! :lol
