As in an expression, a metaphore for current visual next-generation consoles, graphical gaming goodness.
I have since long ago fought a tumor that has made my senses ultra-sensitive (search it up, I duscussed it a couple times). Now it is melted, and I am very slowly getting back on my feet, too slowly in fact. Something however made me change my mind today I was like, tired of not playing games! Because since my retinas' state degraded, I had not played a single videogame, and barely witnessed voluntarily any video, since september 2003, since I played Soul Calibur 2 for the Xbox.
Today, I was looking at the HDTV with my consoles, at the set with the cables and the game collection I was building up, I was looking at the eternally blank Samsung boob tube, and that was one time too many, I guess. So I looked over at my bookshelve and said, I want to witness graphical marvels now. So I took Ninja Gaiden, put it in my Xbox, hooked up in progressive scan with the component cables and all, with the TV closed. I remembered how to go through the menus and load a save that someone else had done (the kind of thing I had to do for way too long), with the screen still shut down. And then, I was there, with the huge Xbox controller in my hand and I accidentaly opened my HDTV. It's a CRT and the flicker they make previously totally killed my eyes. But, it was somehow bearable, how amazing!
And wow, I could witness, and play a videogame for a few minutes, for the first time since one and a half years ago! I'd wondered for so long, what are the best looking console titles available today? Ninja Gaiden definitely was one, one of the best looking Xbox titles still today. So I decided to turn off the HDTV and to barely play a graphically top of the line game for GameCube and PlayStation 2. Of course, it was easy to choose Resident Evil 4 as for the GameCube. With the TV shut, I remembered how to enable progressive scan, I remembered on how to go through menus blindly, and I loaded up a gamesave that somebody else had made. I was into the game. I was anxious, because RE4 the first time I saw it in motion, I was sure (and I always remained that way), from the start that Capcom would make a gaming masterpiece. I could not believe it when I saw the reviews, I was right! And then I was looking for a very short time, at the game in motion, that I controlled. Holy crap, what a beautiful fucking game. I spoiledmyself the storyline because I wanted to witness as much as I could about the game without being able to play any of it. It's incredibly stylish and detailed, and well-animated. I was frowned to have to turn the GameCube and the TV off, man I wish I could play that game in a single row. I then promptly hooked up properly my PSTwo in Component and wanted to play Gran Turismo 4, but then I remembered I had loaned it to someone. So there, I could finally witness, and even play a little, real console games, on a CRT
But, as I can for now only take it in slight doses and I need not to abuse it, these doses better be the best they can. So what I mean is, I want you to suggest me the most beautiful games that next-gen consoles (PS2, GameCube, Xbox) have to offer.
To me, it's important for the game to be beautiful from a technical AND artistical point of view. Because I dunno, I looked at Ninja Gaiden, I tought I would be fucking amazed, but even if I admired the high-poly count, the stunning animation, details, I was like "isn't there more to it?", but there is no. And I saw all that was released before september, and read the reviews, I know Ninja Gaiden is technically more impressive than RE4. RE4 however, I liked the style much more. So I don't know, maybe I have been spoiled by PC Games screenshots. PC Games as much as I'd want to, I cannot play, they require me to be too close to the screen, and I still have inherent presbitism. Same thing for video clips, I only archive them, I can't bear them (I then cannot watch DVD clips), they make me feel dizzy, only fluid console games can do. I want to see the best that Xbox, GameCube, and especially PS2 has got to offer. I mainly reviewed PS2 games before and they definitively improved, I am anxious to see them in motion. I have many games, original games, that I buy to make a gigantic backlog when I can game without any pain at all, so I prepare for that day I hope will come soon. I have many games you may suggest me, I prefer artistical over technical, I think I want to see Paper Mario 2 next. For PS2 well, as for recent games I have Xenosaga Episode 2, and Tekken 5. I guess a fighting game never is as complex to render beautifully as say a 3D action game. Xbox, I need to see Halo 2, but I feel I will be really disappointed, as I usually loathe console FPS games. Golgeneye I loved tough, but the original Halo, I did not loved as much as virtually everyone else did.
The funniest thing is all this time I tought I'd become a terrible gamer, and then I realised the difficulty of the first game I played (Ninja Gaiden). I don't remember where I was at all, but amazingly I was barely touched and I seemed to make it through the level with ease. Most of all, it makes my hands (filled with dyskinesia) prompt again, it sharpens my reflexes, in a sense, it helps curing me!
That is a challenge I deem quite appropriate for GAF. Are you ready to take it? Suggest me the games that will make me amazed at the power of the consoles!
And to AtomicShroom if he posts in this thread:
1-Your Splinter Cell Chaos Theory game is not even released yet, and I loathed the graphics since I first saw the game in motion at Ubisoft Montreal, too much lightning and shadows for my tastes
2-Yes you think Conker Reloaded is the best looking game evar, but furs don't necessarily make for a pretty game
