Seriously, how people seemingly put the spin on how piracy is actually a good thing just shows how transparent they are...

The world is not black and white but grey with many many shades.

Pirates don't warez all their games and people with lots of legit games can have one or two pirated games. Piracy doesn't make a winner but it help a lot.

You are correct....BRD ROM players will not require an internet connection to work....


BRD-R/REs on the other hand....who knows???

If the ps3 is as expensive as they're hinting it to be, I think it is a pretty safe assumption that anyone who can drop that kind of cash on a console can afford broadband and will probably even have or be willing to buy a HDTV. Granted, broadband isn't available in all areas, but I would imagine that those people are not their target market for the ps3.

Certainly not as dumb as that comment. There is absolutely NO hardware manufacturer, publisher, or developer that believes that Piracy has any positive effects. It's a crutch used by many for either explaining why the PSOne and PS2 and Xbox have sold well, or to make pirates themselves feel better about theft.

Am I reading this right? Blu-Ray players require an internet connection to function properly? I don't care how bad you want to spin that in favour of the format or in favour of copy protection, that's an awful idea for something that is intended for mainstream acceptance.

Well no biggie for me, firstly because I don't usually watch pirated movies on my dvd player and I don't pirate games. And I don't plan on taking the next step to Blu Ray anyways, I'll stick with DVD until HVD comes out.

I'll say though, that the thought did occur to me after reading up on how well the PSP is doing in Europe. I did wonder, "did the whole emulation of 8/16-bit titles and hacking of the hardware factor into it's sales?". Because I think we can all agree, the software line up is quite bland. Plus, I don't know if PSP movies are multi-region...if they are it could be a reason. If not, this means a limited selection of movies, and they probably aren't getting it for the movies.

Only 1.0 and 1.5 firmware currently can homebrew, Europe gets the latest updates models. Games are multi-region, movies are not. And for the comment of a bland software line up, are you mad? That launch list is packed.

Look at the Dreamcast - if it was true that the easier a console is to pirate, the more popular and therefore more units will be sold, then the DC should be at 200 Million units world wide today! It was the easiest console to pirate since games were invented.


While it is true that the more popular a console is, the more likely it is to be pirated, you can't work the forumla back the other way.

Europeans don't need a game to be sold on. The hardware is very impressive and they associate the Playstation brand with the games they enjoy.

It was already made clear that Blu-ray rom (aka what's in PS3) doesn't need a connection BR-R/RW on the otherhand...

Also, if you only plan to watch/play "legit" software then it is a non-issue. That is unless you are part of the 0.0000000000001% of the population that would only modify to import and if that's the case then buy systems from both regions.
