Blu-ray vs DVD sales

Anyone interested in this topic? I'd like to use this thread to track blu-ray and dvd sales because I think some may be interested in seeing how much marketshare the blu-ray format has reached in physical media.

Following an impressive surge during Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, Blu-ray sales have set a new record. For the week ending 12/14/13, consumers generated $127.10 million in Blu-ray disc revenue, up 15.7% from the same week last year.

The previous record for Blu-ray disc revenue set during Black Friday was $119.15 million. During the same week, DVD revenue was $203.04 million, down 15.2% from the same period last year.

Total spending for the week ending 12/14/13 was down 5.48% from the same week the previous year.

Bluray slowly creeping toward 50% marketshare!

I imagine Blu Ray could do better if it was actually sold everywhere.

I just saw a cartoon that was only being made for DVD even though it's clearly HD.

Jeez, Blu rays have been out since 2006, how are they still lagging behind DVDs?

i still probably buy more dvds than blu-rays. for many movies the improved picture quality is just not worth the extra cost to me. of course i also buy a lot of older movies used dirt cheap that might not even be on blu-ray.

Have you seen new blu-ray prices? I went to Best Buy and they are damn near $30...dvds are cheaper. Speaking of bad experiences. Man the amount of commercials and previews on blu-rays are fucking insulting. If you spend that much on a disc you shouldn't need to see that much shit before getting to a movie.

for some reason it's a similar story for any of Fox's shows outside of The Simpsons. Hell, the only piece of Family Guy media that has been sold on BD is the Star Wars trilogy. I really don't get why they don't do more BD sets. Are they too cheap, or something?

I guess the cost of them producing HD sets is too much for them.
Sucks.

It's one of those things where DVD was a HUGE leap over VHS tapes - anybody can see the difference. No rewinding, instant access, they don't wear out, better picture, etc. Even on "standard" TVs of the day, it was obvious.

Most of us here are aware of the "statistical" upgrades for BD (1080p, Uncompressed Sound, extra space, BD-Live, etc), but the general functionality is the same. If you hook a BD player up in a "standard" home, the difference is nowhere near as obvious. It will eventually be the standard just due to old tech wearing out, but it's a much harder sell - you won't see grandmothers going out to get a BD player.

It's frustrating as we see adoption holding back releases (same thing with 3D BDs, some movies don't even come out like Shark Night 3D), but there's not much you can do. Most people don't care at this point, 4K will be even harder. I don't see that one taking off at all, if it sticks around it will be by sheer force of will from the manufacturers and content producers.

I wonder whether 4K Blu-Ray will ever come to fruition.

I've got a funny feeling the current Blu-Ray will the be the last physical format and going forward new standards (e.g. 4K) will be digital only.

You mention 1080p but DVD is only 480p. Bluray is 720p, 1080i and 1080p. I think the difference is pretty obvious when we talk about better picture. Agree about the rest though.

What good would that do? People obviously aren't too interested in them compared to DVDs and supporting DVDs doesn't require any extra hardware.

Yes, but it would force people to upgrade if they want a physical movie. It's silly to keep pouring money into an old format. They dropped VHS over time, they should do the same with Blu Ray.

DVD is good enough for most people. It's no Blu obviously, but it's not awful like VHS.

I mean the quality of free to air digital tv is awful where I live but no one really gives a shit.

Considering many people have crappy $250 32" LED's, it's not a huge surprise that people don't see a huge difference between 480p and even 720p/1080p, even with Blu-Ray's.

it'll make a difference when they zoom in their tv to get rid of those pesky black bars
