That box art is always amazing to me. Looks ballar as hell. But I know I'll never get my friends to play it

2 -Samurai Swords / Shogun

My favorite video game, Shogun Total War, took beats from this game. I'd love to give it a try. It's out of print though.

The board games based on From Software games look interesting, but I don't have anybody around my place to play them with.

Most board games I DO have people to play with have to be accessible for the ~5 year old crowd, too.

Oh lawd do I feel you. I bought Gloomhaven, its expansion and Jaws of the Lion. I also have Founders of Gloomhaven.

I haven't played a single one. Every time I open the box, I feel sad and scared.

So we've been trying to get into JOTL, and have taken a few abortive stabs at it over the years. Generally so long has passed between each attempt that we can't remember anything and start from the beginning:

I realize what I don't like about the game is that as far as I can tell like the entire thing is a tutorial - they keep adding a new mechanic in every match which means as the appointed Reading The Rules Guy, I find it kind of exhausting since _every_ game is like a first-time game. I'm not sure if/when they're like "Now just play the rest of the scenarios using the rules you already know" but we've never gotten that far.

It was the number one rated game on BoardGameGeek for half a decade and was only recently relegated to the third spot. Why will I never play it? Maybe because it's team-based and most people I know don't have the time and patience for the endless depth and strategy of this game, or any board game in general for that matter. But the worst offender is that the damn thing costs 100+ brand new!!!

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is something I will never be able to fully appreciate, because I wasn't around at the time when it was most meaningful. I'm sure many on NeoGAF can share tales of late night D&D sessions at friend's houses, cramped around a small table with Mountain Dew and Cheetos for sustenance as you went about your adventures. It was the primary entertainment for many children in the 70s as videogames weren't as widespread and common as they were now. In fact, many RPG developers who worked on series like Ultima, Wizardry, Might & Magic and even Doom were influenced by Gary Gygax's excellent creation back in the day.

Catan

I'm not going to say that I'll never play this as I'm going to make a conscious effort to do so, even if I have to play by myself lol. I think the artwork is absolutely beautiful and the theme of the game equally so. It's farming, agriculture and trading. The core skills that allowed us to survive as a species, but in board game form.

First off you fuckers, all these games have digital versions, so saddle the fuck up and get playing!

Twilight Imperium is as glorious as you think it is, go to a game con just to play. It WILL take ALL DAY.

Shogun is still in print, look for "Samurai Swords" or "Ikusa" (I think).

My grail game is the MASSIVE two game version of Axis and Allies. Probably take all weekend and most of a house.

Like a lot of people I got into D&D a few years back and it’s been so much fun. I’d highly recommend it and would say you haven’t missed your chance to appreciate it. I got curious to give it a try and found a great group to play with. Then after mentioning it to friends a bunch of them said they’d be interested in trying it so I’ve been running a game for them and that’s been going great too. I actually had to stop mentioning to friends that I was thinking of running a game because I was getting so many people saying they wanted to take part.

The principle still stands though, we cannot appreciate it within it's prime of the 1970s because that time is gone now and things are much more different. Back then there weren't LAN sessions or multiplayer, there wasn't even internet. Those matches that lasted for hours or sometimes days on end were no doubt more precious, it's something only a person who lived it can truly understand.

I really want to get into 40k but damn it seems expensive. Also I don't have the patience or talent to paint the miniatures. But really all I want is a giant bad ass Titan to put on my desk. Guess I'll stick to the books and lore videos

Back in the 80s, my siblings and I went on a mini binge buying board games (more like them as they had the cash!). Shogun was one of them. We refunded it since we didn't realize it was a long epic kind of game. We were used to typical card games or family games that last an hour kind of thing. We dicked around for a few hours and gave up.

Other games we bought dirt cheap were: Free Parking, Big Bucks (good Monopoly rip off), Boardwalk, Trump the Board Game, Win Place Show horse racing game.

But getting back on topic, I always wanted to try Gloomhaven. I will one day. My laptop is too weak to play in on PC. LOL! But the next time I upgrade my laptop, Im buying it.

As for Axis & Allies, I played Europe a ton after it came out (I won almost every time!), played Guadalcanal and the original a few times. But there's so many versions of A&A Ive wanted to try others. Great games which arent too detailed. For those of you who havent played, it looks daunting at first and setting up the board takes a bit, but the core gameplay is actually simple after a bunch of games..... (assuming you got decent memory and arent one of those gamers who has to ask what the rules are every time you play).

Yeah, that's the tough thing. My friends claim to like board games, but they have a hard time learning rules.
Can be a blessing in disguise. Playing with someone who doesn't know the rules can be a pain in the ass.

My sis in law joins in for board games. Some of these games she's probably played 30 times. More than I've played as they own the game and play amongst themselves. I only join in occasionally when there's a family dinner and we do games after dinner.

I swear to god, she has no clue what the rules are each time. It can be the year 2030 after 300 times playing. After the board is set up and its her turn, she'd ask "Ok, now what do I do? Roll the dice?"

It's actually a faster better playing game if one of their teenagers subs in.

I played it once. It was one if the finest gaming moments of my life.

It was my 16th birthday. It was me, my dad and my best friend. I was they axis, they were the allies. We started playing at like 1 pm and end at 3 am.

It was a battle of attrition from the start. My strategy was to basically play defense until I could out-develop them.

Towards the the end though my strategy didn't work. They slowly whittled away my territories. And then the condescension started coming. They started giving me advice. I hated that. Oh boy did I hate that. So I rejected their advice and made some foolish mistake. To this day "I know what I'm doing" is still used against me.

Warhammer 40k. It just seems too intimidating for noobs with all the miniatures, huge maps, etc. I have no idea how to even dip my toes in.

Any of them at this point. You kinda need to have friends to play board games. A few years ago, I received a gift from a family member for the Metal Gear Solid 4 version of Risk, cuz he knew I liked Metal Gear. Guess it was nice to be thought of, but kinda depressing knowing that I wouldn't and still haven't had anyone to play it with.

Looked up Ikusa (the rebrand of Shogun). Looks like it's out of print too. There are some copies onsale second hand, but they're going for like 250.00. I should have bought a copy from a game story I saw like 5 years ago for 79.00 :(

I own it and I'm probably never going to play it. Can't find anyone interested in learning to play the game. I would have considered selling it but I'm still waiting on the rest of what I backed on the Kickstarter.

I'm never going to have a proper game of scythe. I have "played' a few games where I try to teach friends but nobody wants to stick. We always end up going back to root.

I took the plunge and bought Twilight Imperium. I'm thinking that I'll request to play it for my birthday coming next month.

I recently brought out my old original 2nd edition A&A I've been hauling around since like '89 to play with my son. I hadn't played in like 25 years or more and he has beat me both games we've played so far, guess I forgot all my old strategies. Thinking about upgrading to the new 1942 version at some point, but the classic has that nostalgia value.

I've heard rumors that Renegade Studios is going to do a reprint of classic Axis and Allies this year. Hopefully that's the case. I'd love it.

Axis and Allies is probably my favorite gaming experience. I only played it once, for my 16th birthday. It's a highlight of my sad life.
