Hey all. As some of you are aware, I've been training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for about a year and a half now, and I figured it was about time for me to try my luck at a competition. So today, I competed in my first jiu-jitsu tournament.

I competed in the 170 lbs intermediate division, that is, between 1-3 years experience.

My first match was against a four-stripe blue belt, Victor, who really should have been in the advanced divison. He dominated everyone to easily win first place.

A note on the pictures: although I'm wearing a red belt, there's no such belt in BJJ, I just had to wear that so that the ref could quickly keep track of who to award points to during the match.

I was most worried about my takedowns, since Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is somewhat notorious for not working on them, and in fact I have barely ever spent any time on them. It turned out not to be that big of a deal, fortunately.

In my first match, Victor tried doing some judo-style throws and leg trips on me, but I was able to defend all of his attempts:

On one of his trip attempts, I was able to counter and take him down and land on top:

Unfortunately, that didn't last long, as he quickly reversed me

got past my guard

and was able to secure an arm bar to force me to tap out.

for my second match, things fared far better. My opponent quickly shot in for a double-leg takedown, but I did a textbook sprawl, and then spun around to take his back:

I tried to sink in the choke, and got close, but he was able to squeeze out, but I moved to mount:

Eventually, he managed to reverse me, and get me into quite a bit of trouble with an attempt at a triangle choke from the bottom:

Fortunately, I was able to escape, and again move into mount position:

As time counted down, I once again was able to take his back and make another attempt at a rear choke:

Unfortunately, I didn't quite have the strength remaining to finish the choke before time expired, but I won the match on points 16-4.

Last match to follow:

Oops, forgot the victory shot of my hand being raised for the second fight:

For my third and final match of the day, I was quite drained of strength and energy, and it had a definite effect on my performance.

We struggle against each other for the first three minutes, unable to take each other down. He had a fiercely strong grip on my uniform, which I was unable to break.

I made several rather weak takedown attempts:

I was even able to secure a single leg a couple times:

But I just didn't have the strength left to take him down, though I got close:

Eventually, though I don't quite remember how, he took me down, and from there, I just didn't have enough gas left in the tank to resist. He quickly passed my guard:

and was able to secure an americana lock, forcing me to tap out.

Mounts, rear chokes and grappling/rolling around with men + material for photoshops = good thread.

I'm calling it now!

Seriously though, I need a good active hobby like this myself. And you need a real eye-level bandana.

All in all, it was a great experience for my first jiu-jitsu tournament. I came in third place, so I even got a medal:

It was quite different from training. The intensity level is incomparable, and it's a lot different having a hundred people watching you compete. It really drains you, especially because I was rather nervous.

It's also amazing how I tune everything out. I had no idea that my matches had gone on so long, especially to learn that in my first match there was less than a minute on the clock when I got caught in the armbar. Also, despite everyone yelling, I was able to clearly focus on my coach's instructions that he was yelling from ringside. It was basically the only thing I noticed outside of the match.

what is that old guy doing in the ring with all those young guys? He might break a hip!

j/k boogie, looks cool.

heh, I don't care. People who make fun of jiu-jitsu for looking "gay" are losers. Period.

Congrats on getting out there that in itself is cool as hell. Other than that you have a reall Scott Evil look to you did you know that.

Yeah, sure...whatever you say. <whistles innocently> ;)

Fact: you got punked by some random homeless dude who was probably inebriated and likely smelled of burnt feces. Yet you think you're gonna take on JUDOKA BOOGIE (now with new and improved hair)!? Think again, sir... :D

what did you want me to do? Beat up on a homeless man? Plus what if he had weapons, like dirty syringes or something. Not worth the risk. Homeless people fight dirty.

That's really cool, Boogie. Congratulations!

Also, if anyone is interested, the finals of The Ultimate Fighter plus a Ken Shamrock vs. Rich Franklin matchup are starting on Spike TV right now...

I agree of course. That bit in Breakfast Club where the wrestler completely pwns Jud Nelson tells us this is so.

I still like Jud tho.

Cool pics, and congrats on securing 3rd place! Jiu Jitsu sounds really cool, I'm inspired to take up martial arts myself, sometime. :)

BTW, you look a lot like Rivers Cuomo in the last of your photos. This is a good thing, I think (better than Bob Saget at least =P).

Looks like you were going for the Mandible Claw in the wrong oriface.

Good job. The shorter hair does look better btw. :)

Congratulations man, you did awesome. To be able to go for 3 matches and do as well as you did shows real skill and perserverance. My hats off to you.

I liked the breakdown of the fights you did with the pictures. I could understand the flow of your matches. Some of those pictures are quite good. In the 3rd match it still looks like you had some strength lifting your opponent up. Nice.

I agree with Dream, nice technique in taking the back off a sprawl. Lots of people just hold the position there, and unless you know what your doing you can get reversed when you go for the back. In competition, that's a bold move to do. Again, congratulations.

You should get someone to tape it next time; I'd like to see things in motion. Nice work either way, and from the sound of it you'll be calmer and better prepared next time around.

Actually, I think someone from my club did tape at least one of my matches. If I ever get my hands on the tape, I'll see about finding a way to get it online

Awesome job, Boogie. I wish you showed yourself getting submitted though :lol.

In my experience, the two best ways to take down jiu jitsu guys are by either securing double underhooks then going for a leg, or by going for a lateral drop.

How do you take someone's back from a sprawl? I've never been able to do that. Congrats again.

Heh, well, my dad took the pictures, I guess he was just a little too slow on the trigger when I got caught. Or maybe he didn't want to take the pictures of me losing :lol

As for taking the back, I guess I don't know how I did it, my coach yelled for me to, and I just did.

You have to be pretty quick or else you'll get reversed and put on your back but it helps if you can get an underhook and push the head down.
