Did a search for a thread that discussed books, but only found the Book Club and I did not want to hijack it ^_^;
My 7 and 9 year old cousins (boys) are having their birthday soon and I'm thinking of getting them 2-3 books along with another gift.

What are good books for children of their age? Note that English would be their 2nd language and they are not too good in it, so I'd like to get them a book that easy for them to understand but one they can be emmersed (sp) in.

Right now I'm considering getting them Geronimo Stilton books which I managed to find at a bookshop, but they don't have the first 2 books.

EDIT: Oh and I'd prefer no comic books please, even though I'm a big fan of them and know which comics that'd appeal to them.

It may be a bit too difficult for them (especially the 7 year old) but the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett is a fantastic set of children's books.

It really depends on their reading level. Also, if you're okay with getting them Comic Books (you should be) Super Dinosaur is the PERFECT kids Comic Book.

Harry Potter would be a good choice. The first few novels are very easy for children to read through. However, I cannot say if it would be good reading material for someone whose primary language isn't English.

I have 7 year old's that are into 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' and 'George Brown, Class Clown'.

They are a mixture of easy to read paragraphs and crude cartoons.

One thousand times yes. These books are amazing. I will also always suggest Nation as well. IMO Pratchett's best novel.

If it were not for English being a second language I would put very little stock in "difficulty" of books for kids. If they want to read something, they will make it through the book.

I'll make an anti-recommendation for girls. Never let a five year old read one of the "rainbow magic" series of books until you realise there are like hundreds of them.

If not ready for Harry Potter try "The Dark is Rising" set of books by Susan Cooper. Pretty easy read but lots of memorable parts.
