Id wager they intended to bomb MIT and maybe other targets today. Having robbed 7-11 likely got the funds to get out of town but by setting up explosives to go off today they could trick people into thinking still in town as they flee.

Would be an effective strategy to escape and throw people off but Cop ruined their plan
