Dorner knew how the LAPD operated and had military training. Those two things combined is the reason he survived for that long.

Many police/fire/etc. comms are open to listen to, for various safety reasons, but they do have bands they can use that are either only local or not broadcast across the wider spectrum.

"Less Lethal" is a "bean bag"/"rubber bullet"/"pepperball", which can still cause death, but lesser odds of it happening. Thus "less lethal".

I'll be beaten, but near as I can tell:

- Two Marathon Bombers are fucking around at MIT
- Kill MIT Officer
- Rob 7-11
- Try to rob two gas stations? Missed where the gas station robberies fit in here
- Carjack a Mercedes, keep the hostage for thirty minutes, let him go
- Shootout with the police, throwing grenades, pressure cooker bomb
- MBTA Officer is killed
- Suspect 1 is killed in massive hail of bullets, may have detonated an explosive device that was on his person
- Suspect 2 is on the loose
- Reports of a number of undetonated explosive devices laid out in the streets, bombers receiving foreign military training

All told, this has been going on for like seven and a half hours.

And somewhere in there, some poor guy was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, eventually made to strip, then released...and CNN stayed with THIS part of the story for a really long time.
