Box Office: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Aims for Weak $15 Million in Opening Weekend (Lower than Madam Web)

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The comic book spinoff, set in Sony’s universe of Marvel characters, is targeting a paltry $13 million to $15 million from 3,200 theaters its opening weekend. Based on projections, “Kraven the Hunter” could contend with February’s misfire “Madame Web” ($15.3 million debut) for the ignominious distinction of the lowest start among Sony-produced Marvel adventures. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the eponymous antihero in the R-rated film, which faced a litany of pandemic and strike-related release date delays on its long and winding journey to theaters. “Kraven” cost an upward of $110 million to produce (it was greenlit for $90 but ballooned after last year’s writers and actors strikes), which ended up being considerably more than the $80 million price tag for “Madame Web” but far less than rival studios like Disney or Warner Bros. typically pump into superhero tentpoles. “Kraven,” the first in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with an R rating, was co-financed by TSG.

wants to fuck an Asian grill.
Plenty of other good options at the theatre like Moana 2, Wicked, and that badly animated Lord of the Rings cartoon….

I can’t believe that fucking Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is gonna be one of the better blockbusters this year lmao

The general audience, pretty much like the casuals, don't even know who the fuck this guy is. Excellent move from Sony. Whats next? A movie about Peter nerd friend? Or maybe a movie about aunt May.

Kraven going to be a massive success. That assumes the tried and true strategy of "Using a barely known character leads to great success" works out.

This kind of movie might have market, but i dont think its big, and could be justified to be greenlit. As the movie characters are not that popular for mass

I don’t know who at Sony keeps suckering them into spending hundreds of millions on these movies but that person must be a god.

Avi Arad. Remember his name.

He has needed to go arguably 15 years ago, but somehow he keeps getting away with this.

Its all about clinging to that spidey deal. They MUST generate content in order to keep it, and probably a certain level of $$$ expenditure, so they really have no choice. Spidey main films and Venom keep the lights on, these films are basically shovelware.

"White Black Panther".....huh? I wonder if that's more a statement of his power set versus him coming from a secret high-tech society isolated from the surrounding lands that struggles with their culpability in allowing their fellow humans to suffer while they prosper in hiding. If the action is at least compently framed, choreographed, and shot there is a modicum of value in that I guess.

What are Black Panthers actual powers? He's just fast and strong, right? All the rest comes from the suit I think. Maybe in the comics he has more stuff like super panther senses or whatnot.

I always thought Kraven was just a Punisher-type well-trained human with a boner for spider-man, only rarely given powers through super serum stuff or whatnot. Was he always a super?

In the movie, judging from the clips, he has super strength, speed and reflexes... Like BP.

Well, AND virtually every other super. Just drinking some concoction to get powers is basically how Steve Rogers, Bucky, new Captain America guy (I think?), Spiderman, and a whole bunch of other folks got juiced up, with some slight variations they all have strength and reflexes. Didn't Morbius get bit by a bat or something? Though I guess there are more ties to Africa to make the connection more direct? He's seen it so obviously something is there that he noticed. Given Sonys attempts to create a spidey villain "shared universe" I guess they gotta really flesh these guys out.

The superhero (and SW) assembly lined mish mash of media continues. I guess there's only so many Spiderman and Avenger movies they can make.

As for you guys talking superpowers, almost all superheroes have the same basic set of powers.... super strong, fast, good at fighting, it seems every character can do giant jumps. Same stuff different uniform. From there, it branches off: some can fly, some can regenrate health, some can shoot accurate like Hawkeye etc...

It's not all Avi Arad's fault. It's also the head of Sony Pictures trying to torpedo the genre so they don't have to make superhero movies anymore. His name is Tom Rothman and he's ALWAYS hated the genre. He thinks it's beneath whatever studio he's running to make comic book movies.

He was running Fox in 2000 when Bryan Singer was filming X-Men. Rothman tried to sabotage the movie by slashing the budget and pushing up the release date. He had hoped it'd destroy the movie, cause it to bomb, and then Fox could move on from comic book movies. He failed. That was just the start of a LONG history of him trying to destroy the genre before he moved to Sony:

He succeeded with their shit Spider-Man movies. Made movies so bad they don't have to make them anymore.

was gonna watch this, but was really let down with the 3rd Venom movie, and while flawed, liked the first two for the popcorn. (even the 2nd one, but that was like borderline)
