Brain Training in Hospitals

Next-Gen

An Associated Press report today states that hospitals are renting out DS units to patients. Atsuko Uchida, an administrator at Kyoto's Uchida Hospital said, "We've made ten Nintendo DS's available and they're almost always rented out."

The hospital runs a special clinic for patients suffering dementia. Doctors there have suggested that elderly people purchase the game in order to keep their minds busy. They say it also helps as a form of self-diagnosis.

Dr. Takeshi Kihara, a neuro-psychiatrist at the clinic said, "The game won't cure dementia. But it's a good form of stimulation, especially for old people living alone."

Isamu Shishido, a 67-year-old retiree said, "I don't want to end up some crazy old man. I want to play a little everyday before going to bed."

what next huh?

wow!

the reach nintendo's marketing is staggering!

i do think the way nintendo is opening up videogames to all these new audiences is a truly great thing :)

edit - on a side note, has anyone who's played the brain training games noticed any improvement in brain functions?

I thought the same thing so I checked the old story and he donated to the Kyoto University Hospital, not this one.

The Brain Training franchise is amazing, Hospitals? :lol

What's next, school exams taken on the DS?

So now doctors are telling patients to play their DS? I have a very bad feeling about this. Phase 2 of the DS mind control project is already in full effect. It won't be long now.

Nice to see an article promoting games as good for people, a refreshing change of pace in contrast to all the GTA and the crusade against violent games.

What a waste of time. The last thing I would want to do as a 67 year old is waste my time playing non games.
You're right, old people at a hospital should just stare at a wall. It's cheaper that way.

Haha yes god forbid you spend the years where it is practically impossible for you to accomplish anything of worth, doing nothing.

I mean that is what the prime of your life is for, amirite!?

Not to mention all the little girls who wouldn't know how to cook without Cooking Mama's intense training sessions...
