BREAKING: ABC - RIP Peter Jennings

when he was diagnosed it must have been some SERIOUSLY bad cancer... I mean, four months from diagnosis til death? Crazy shit. Too bad, too. Only news anchor on TV that I like anymore is Anderson Cooper... and he's still on cable.

Yeah, ever since his hideous display of unprofessionalism during the 9/11 broadcasts, second-guessing every goddamn thing that everyone was doing in response and making a plethora of ridiculously subjective calls, I lost respect for his journalistic integrity. That said, as a kid I liked him a lot. And I still think he was a damn sexy looking human being.

My father died 2 months after his diagnosis. Lung cancer, metastasized to the bones, metastasized to the spine, metastasized to the brain. Once it gets to the bones and spine, it spreads incredibly quickly, and it cannot be effectively slowed down.

Damn.... so it really is that you have to either catch it early or not at all.

You're in the vast minority there. His coverage that day won awards, including a Peabody. Fully desereved. He stayed on the air personally for 25 hours straight.

There's a bit more to it than that. My father was terrified of going to the doctor. My brother had died 3 months before from Leukemia. My father ignored the stabbing pain in th emiddle of his chest for a little more than a month. He only went to the doctor's when he was completely incapacitated. . .I drove him there, without a license.

It would've been caught about a month earlier had he been more receptive of the signals his body was sending to him (aka. STABBING CHEST PAIN).

Cancer's tricky like that. I've had this little cyst deep in my back for a couple years now, that I can feel with my finger on days that I'm dehydrated enough.

I went to see a doctor who only told me "Come back when it's the size of a golf ball. It's too deep to do a biopsy without requiring major surgery"

Can a guy just go out and get an MRI as a checkup to make sure he doesn't have cancer? Being a life and death issue and all, being able to tell the same doctor "I told you so" in ten years while on my deathbed just wouldn't feel that fulfilling.

i'm nearing my 10th anniversary of my smoking habit and now I keep thinking I'm going to die the same way he did even if I stop now. I think I might just in the name of Peter.

While you reflect on these deeply sad and emotional times, enjoy a Hot Pocket.

*tee-hee* Vast minority. I always find that funny, just a personal thing. Saying something is a minority, yet it's vast. Hehe.

Anyway, I was hoping the news breaking in the other thread was just a bit of misinformation. This really depresses me, but I'm happy he went out feeling good about his life. I guess that's the best way you could hope to go when you must.

On a semi-related note, here's a really interesting article on death. If you need login since it's a registration read, go to bugmenot.
