It takes a certain kind of voice to be hailed as the next Michael Bublé, but it doesnt hurt when you get to perform with the man himself.
A few years back, North Burnaby vocalist Stephen Scaccia sang at the opening of the G&F Financial branch on Hastings and Carleton. He had no idea hed be doing a duet.
(Bublé) was in the branch, taking pictures with people, and I got to speak with him beforehand I was absolutely starstruck, but then I had to go onstage and music comes first, recalled Scaccia. I just remember seeing people start to scream in the crowd, and then out of the corner of my eye, there he is onstage. It was so cool.
Thats right. Bublé joined him onstage not the other way around.
Scaccia had no idea hed perform with Bublé that day, nor did he know hed join the Burnaby crooner just a week later. Bublé invited Scaccia to the filming of his Christmas special, and midway during the show, he spontaneously brought his protégé onstage.
He said, Oh, Im tired of singing Christmas songs lets do something else, and in the middle of that, he called me up Theres a kid here who sings, come up here, said Scaccia. I got to do a full song with this really intimate crowd, with his family there, and it was with his full band, which was so cool. I thought I was just going to be watching his Christmas special.
Scaccia, now 22, has since gone from the stage to the studio, putting together his first EP, titled No Longer Frozen. The seven-track record is a year-and-a-half in the making, put together under the guidance of Grammy Award-winning producer Ian Prince.
He had no idea who I was, but he had heard of me through someone he used to work with and asked me to sing a demo for him, said Scaccia. I sang for him, and then after that, because he noticed that people were kind of buzzing about my voice, he was like, lets work on an EP together.
The album alternates between more classical R&B Bublé-esque tunes to poppy dance tracks a bit of a detour from what hes known for.
I started out as a crooner, and I think thats what a lot of Burnaby knows me as, said Scaccia, whos humbled by the endorsement from Bublé and the comparison.
When we were making this EP, I knew I kind of wanted to venture away from the comparison a little bit and develop my own identity I wanted to have a little bit of that more adult pop content in there, but at the same time, I wanted to embrace the fact that I am only 22 years old and embrace my fun, young side of music.
While putting the album together was a lengthy process, Scaccia is thankful for the opportunity to work with Prince and other talented musicians.
This was actually my first stab at songwriting, and I got to write with such an amazing producer, said Scaccia. I feel like I learned a lot.
At the end of the day, Im just so proud of myself for getting through it and finally doing something Ive always wanted to do. I was just waiting for the resources, and miraculously, it came to me.
No Longer Frozen is now available digitally on iTunes and Amazon. Stay tuned to stephenscaccia.com and facebook.com/stephenscaccia for show announcements.

Stephen Scaccia is a 22-year-old singer and songwriter, born and raised in Burnaby BC. He started singing at the age of 13 by entering many local talent shows within the Lower Mainland to gain exposure and companions. Since then, he has gone on to accomplish some great things in the industry.
Stephen has sung the national anthems and halftime shows for the Vancouver Canucks, BC Lions, Vancouver Giants, and Vancouver Canadians. He has also performed at casinos all over the Lower Mainland, opening for some big Vancouver names like Nearly Neil and Dal Richards. He has performed at many festivals and galas, such as the Michael Cuccione Foundation Gala, and Italian Day on Commercial Drive. Most recently, Stephen performed at the Jack Poole Plaza for Light the Way for Kids, a massive Christmas Tree Lighting organized by Kids Help Phone, one of Stephen's favourite causes.
Stephen has just released his 7-song debut EP album, "No Longer Frozen", to the general public. It is available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and Spotify. The EP has stayed true to Stephen's love for pop music, while still displaying his years of vocal experience.
Youve sang with Michael Buble not once, but twice! Tell us more about this:
"That was an experience I'll never forget! It happened about two years ago, near Thanksgiving. There was a grand opening for a G&F Financial branch in Burnaby, near my neighbourhood. I was asked by someone working the event to sing at it for about half an hour. When I arrived there, he casually told me that Michael Buble was inside the branch, taking photos with people. At first I didn't believe him, but he took me inside and I couldn't believe my eyes! We spoke for a bit, shook hands, and then parted ways because I had to go on stage. Halfway through one of the songs in my set (it was one of his songs), he surprised me in the corner of my eye by joining me on stage, and we sang the whole song together! The crowd went nuts. It was crazy!
After the performance, he asked my mother and I if we'd be interested in watching the filming of his Christmas Special the following weekend at CBC Studio downtown. We definitely didn't pass up the opportunity, and decided to go. During the filming, he decided to take a short break, and started singing some of his regular, non-Christmas tunes with his big band to loosen up a bit. Not even two lines in, he stops all the music and says, "Wait, wait! There's a kid in the audience who sings! You! Yeah you! Come up!!" He was pointing at me, and I'll never forget the nervousness I felt in that moment! So I walked up, and he asked me to tell everybody how we met, and to pick our song. So we sang "Haven't Met You Yet" together, with his whole band. It was unreal. What an experience! It was funny, too, because one week later I was singing the national anthem and halftime show at the BC Lions game. It turned out that he was attending that game, so he watched my whole performance and we got to talk and hangout for a while."
Youre not only a singer, but a songwriter; where do you draw your inspiration from?
"The EP I just released was my first stab at co-writing music! It was an incredible learning experience, and really made me believe in my abilities as a writer. Prior to this album, I never thought I'd be capable of writing music.
I draw inspiration from feelings, whether they're my own feelings (which is usually the case) or the feelings of someone close to me. Music, whether it's writing or performing, is all about feeling. That is my opinion smile emoticon.
"SOS", a song on my EP, was my very first cowrite. During the process, I couldn't stop thinking about the struggles that almost every musician, myself included, has to barrel through in order to achieve their goals. The song is about going through the entire industry alone, even though all you want is a helping hand. By the end of the song, the lyrics talk about staying true to yourself, and freeing yourself regardless of the difficulty of the path ahead of you."
What might folks be surprised to learn about you?
"There are a number of things that might surprise people about me! I'm a soccer player, to name one. I've been playing soccer since I was 6 years old, and I play now for a club called Astro FC. They're some of the best guys to surround myself with! They've been so supportive of my music and my new album ever since I joined the team. I also got my tonsils removed just a few months ago, which people might find surprising! I was singing again just a month later. I'm quite passionate about animal rights."
