The A/C Conked Out.... And It's 111 Degrees!

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
So as the title says, my AC bombed out and today is a high of 111 degrees. It's already over 100° in the house.

Just after 11pm last night and I noticed the air conditioner shut off immediately after turning on. I was thinking to myself, "uh oh" and my fear became reality.

My roommate (yes, the trans girl) took a look at it this morning and she noticed a wire was completely burned out. She fixed it but it was only temporary as after a couple hours it failed again.

She says I probably need a new fan and capacitor and she'd be able to install it. My worry is having to call repair people as I have no money for that.

Not having AC, especially in Vegas, really sucks. I have a small separate unit in my room so I can at least sleep somewhat at night. I'm letting my roomie use it right now as her room is a blast furnace and I don't want her slow roasting in there.

All I have to say is I envy people who live in cooler climates, like up in northern America. You have it so good.

Honestly if your roommate can do it let your roommate do it. It's just a few screws, bolts and wires for that stuff. Just be careful to not shock yourself with the capacitor because capacitors that size pack a punch.

Well, at least it isn't humid. I think you can use a "cheap" evaporative cooler in a climate like yours to keep cool until the AC is fixed.

Current temperature in my house at 4:50pm.

My bathtub backed up a few days ago and needed some serious plumbing. My roommate was able to fix it working with a drain snake and some new piping.

She's my fucking hero.

WTF? This was your chance to finally get that dick... share the AC... take off clothes so that maybe the AC doesn't have to work quite as hard... and then you just let what's (un)natural take its course.

And for the love of god lean into some of these plumbing double entendre opportunities.

If the wire is burning up it's probably the contactor and not the capacitor. There's contacts in it like what a light switch has, they probably became dirty or burned up and fused together. Just my $0.02. I'm not a hvac tech but i've changed out both before.

White trash hack is to put foil on all your windows. It'll look like shit but you'll have some relief. Get a few fans too.

What wire burned up?
My downstairs AC went down on the 4th. Took a week to finally figure out what was wrong - changed the capacitor and the defrost control board even though the latter was unlikely to be the problem. Had an AC guy come out and reccomend a new unit for like $8k. I finally figured it out and got it back working. Turned out the water outlet was mainly blocked and the emergency cut-off kept triggering.

My ac completely died last year. Had to wait almost 3 weeks for the insurance company to quit screwing around and finally replace the thing. Since it was summer and in the south, it was fairly miserable.

Your insurance vompany paid to replace the AC? I didn't realize they would pay for that!

Put's on Glasses:
That's pretty cool!

Yeaaaaaaaaaah!

His roomie can replace wires and fix a drain. Of course 'cause it is a dude :P

And if this "it's so hot, we are all sweaty and glistening, my sexy "girl with a dick" roommate has to sleep in my bed because her room is too hot...." isn't the start to a "Hello Penthouse" letter, I dunno what else is.

Probably a home warranty policy, not your usual property insurance. Pretty common add on for a house purchase, like $1000/yr or so. But in my experience getting them to replace, not just band-aid, a major thing like A/C is hard work.

Pretty much. The ac was over 30 years old and they had "fixed" it multiple times before, but last year the thing finally broke beyond repair.

Nice in my place. Right now at 21.5C as my thermo is set to kick in when it hits 22C. Also got a nice big tower fan in my bedroom I put on at night. I literally use a big puffy comforter when I go to bed.

I used to live near Death Valley in California. If I were living there today, I would have many AC units for redundancy. And the AC guy on speed dial.

But it's a dry heat :messenger_winking:

I remember my first trip to Vegas. 114 degrees leaving the airport. It felt like I stepped into an oven. Dry heat or not, hot is f'ing hot.

I feel sometimes like "i can do without A/C" but damn, it shut off for me last night and got fixed the next day, it was very uncomfortable. Might be one of the modern comforts we take most for granted. And modern toilets.

Is Vegas a tranny hotspot or something?

Like San Francisco is a fruitcake hotspot?
Actually that's where my roommate wanted to move to but she realized it wasn't feasible.

Anyways, here is the current temperature at 12am in my house.

Riley (that's my roomate's name) woke up to check on me. It's brutal out here in the living room.

She's going to wake up at around 1am or so and start taking things apart on the AC and then go to a specialty store right after sunrise to get parts to start working on it.

Wish us luck.

Do you...you know...with Riley? does it hurt?

Sounds like hell. It was about 90 degrees American inside here (I can't legally install AC because Europe - more specifically, the social housing association thinks they look ugly so I can only use a mobile unit in house. And no, they won't provide alternatives). The humidity is off the fucking charts at those temperatures here.

What happens in Vegas …
Just buy a new one. If you don't have the money, play at the casino until you're cooled down.
