'WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart, who rehabilitated from a stroke to return to WWE earlier this century, announced via Instagram that he is dealing with another major health issue.

The Hit Man has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and will be undergoing surgery later this week. In addition to his recovery plans, Hart talks about his mission to spread awareness about diagnosis and treatment of a disease that effects 14% of men in their lifetime, according to National Cancer Institute statistics.'

More at the link, including his full statement. This is really sad. Hoping the Hitman beats this!

Aw man :/ I was never a huge Hart fan, but he was a pretty massive part of my child/young adulthood. Hope he gets through okay.

They caught my dad's very early on, had surgery, and he's been cancer-free for 6 years. The odds are in his favor for this type of cancer.

Congrats! That's great news.

My father had very aggressive prostate cancer, had a radical prostectomy. They said there was a 50-50 chance he'd die in a year. It's been 13 years since.

Absolutely one of the "best" cancers you can get, with a tremendous amount of treatment options.

Good luck to Bret - the initial few years after are rough, but recovery absolutely be strong!

Just found out myself. Cancer fucking sucks. Bret hasn't had it easy either. He lost Owen, he got his career ended thanks to Goldberg, seen his family disintegrate, and now cancer. Damn guy just can't catch a break.

FUCK CANCER!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently watched the Owen Hart biography and seeing Bret talk about him was tough. Bret Hart has dealt with a lot of adversity in his career and life. With the good comes a lot of bad for him, and now this is another hurdle. I hope he can win this battle.

He'll beat it. Very high survival rate.

Not going to be fun, but he'll still be with us.

Almost every single one of us will have it before we die, but it won't kill most.

If they found it early (which they normally do) and he's young (which he is in relative terms), then the odds will be massively in his favour.

By massively in his favour I mean like 99%.

My Dad had prostate cancer and it was pretty early (stage 2 [T2b, but only just over T2a]), all of the conversations they were having was about retaining his urinary functions at 100% and stuff like that as it was essentially presumed he would survive due to the fact it's not very threatening (relatively).

He got the all-clear a little while back and has been improving ever since his surgery. The only issue he has now is that he has a foot problem from having his leg in the stirrups for too long during surgery but even that is getting better.

EDIT:

BTW people who have Dads in their 60s+, there's a pretty good chance you'll go through this too, so take it as reassurance.

Prostate Cancer is so different to other cancers that I almost feel it should be called a different "thing", such is its slow pace of spread and survival rate.

God damnit, we've already lost Rickman, Bowie and Wogan in the last thirty days, I don't want to lose the hitman as well. :(

My thoughts are with him.

The part where he describes all the medical stuff he's had to go through because of his wrestling career was deep.

Hope he pulls through.

I don't know how true it is but I just read someone on Something Awful say that it's so slow moving you could do nothing about it and still live to your 80s. I hope that's true.

That is not true at all.

Prostate cancer does have good survival rates but there are so many different factors that to make a blanket statement like that is absurd. It depends on a multitude of factors. Men die from prostate cancer.
