Building my 4th MAME cabinet...

If all the power and effort some people put into facilitating the playing of video games could somehow be channeled into scientific research, or harnessed somehow, the world could finally cast aside its shackles of oppression and break free of its dependence on chemical fuels and empirical rule by corporate monopolies.

I weep for the present.

Ermmm....

You heard me, bub. "Ermmm" what? Feeling guilty for contributing to the downfall of society now? Wouldn't you feel a much greater sense of accomplishment if you were chasing down an elusive set of numbers in a new quantum physics model, or creating a new kind of imaging device for documenting micro-plankton who make their home in the Great North Atlantic Rift?

Noooooo, you'd rather sit around on your ass and play video games all day, every day. Chasing non-existent blocks on a TV screen.

Feeling a little twang of sorrow yet for your wasted life?

How's the Suzo? I've been wanting to try one of these.

You ordered one of everything from Ultimarc didn't you? They don't carry the better Sanwas, I don't think.

Maybe he is just a mirror ... casting our weak-willed relfections back at us and shaming us all into a productive life.

He's just an a-hole

Speaking of Suzo, did you realize they merged with Happs? Was kind of shocked the other day when I went to their website and saw the announcement on the front page.

ravingloon

As for Baron, so I'm assuming you don't read non-fiction, or watch tv, or go to the movies, or listen to music... oh, wait. You've just wasted time posting this, so you've just disqualified yourself as someone who has no outside interests and is focused solely on the betterment of mankind... whatever the hell that means.

Actually Ultimarc doesn't actually manufacture any of their sticks. Even the Ultimarc T-Stick Plus (My sticks) is just a slightly modified stick from one of the Euro manufacturs (Forget who. It might actually be Suzo)

As for which one to use, I vote you extensively test both before settling on one. This'll even satisfy Baron since you'll be doing something productive during that time.

Looks nice. What is your Xbox cabinet going to be like? It almost seems like it would be more cost effective to put a modded Xbox and run emulators off of that than refurbishing a PC.

hey boyo,

how do you wire the arcade controls up? do you have any good guides or websites because id love to start making a cab, your cabs look great.

I was so planning on building a cab, until I started looking around at local vendors/amusement places and realized that I could get something together much quicker, cheaper and with less hassle by refurbing a beat up existing cab. Of course this depends on how "full featured" you require your cab to be, i.e. spinner, trackball, lightguns, 4-players, etc.

If you have the woodworking skills, tools and time, building one would be a great project.

About 3 weeks of work (evenings only), under $500 (including CPU parts, mobo/CPU/Ram/videocard/keyboard encoder/new sticks/buttons).

Was a JAMMA cab, and now a pure MAME cab, with MameWAH frontend, console emus (Genesis/SNES), etc. I've literally spent more time tweaking the software to make is as perfect as possible than fussing with the cabinet itself.

Was one of my favorite "home improvement" projects yet :)

And http://ArcadeControls.com is one of the best reference sites out there, and my inspiration.

Hi Chaps,

Arcadecontrols is also my inspiration and why I created my site www.digitalarcade.co.uk

I am hoping to grow my site into a UK based repository of information on all things arcade cabinet related. The site is very young and I would really appreciate it if you do have some knowledge of arcade cabinet building, please share it in the forum.

I had one of my cabinets raffled at the Retrovision 5 show in February. A picture of it appeared in last months Retro Gamer.

I am going to build a mini cocktail cabinet during the CGEUK show in London in August which will be cool. I have been talking to Ultimarc, the supplier of the infamous I-PAC keyboard encoder and they are going to sponsor me.

If any of u guys has anything you would like to contribute to my site, then please get in touch...

I will be building an upright cabinet shortly...

My site has the start of a guide on how to build a mini-cocktail cabinet.. I am completing this over a the next few weeks hopefully.

After i build the upright, I will add plans for that on my site as well as loads of piccies.

I will first build one using the mini-cocktail as a cabinet for it. I will then build an upright one for a chap who has ordered one from me. My XBOX is chipped so would be ideal for the basis of a cabinet. Ultimarc now sell an XBOX adaptor that plugs into the I-pac so u can use real arcade controls whilst playing XBOX games like Streetfighter, Midway Classics and MAME :D

Wow!
Piracy and plugging!
TEH BANNED!

Nice work, they look great. Are you a joiner/carpenter?

:lol :lol :lol I can't believe people actually took this seriously...even if it was said like four months ago.

BTW, how much would it cost to buy one of these Mame cabinets? Cause there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of me building one. I came across a Mame cabinet a few months ago (either a SF2 or Neo Geo cabinet), and was just blown away by how cool it was.

here is a picture of my rangi ass cabinet. I bought an old SFII cab and put the PC and mame in it, then purchased new controls from happ and wired those up myself. I'm pretty happy with it just because I have never built anything before. As long as I don't stand it next to anything boyo built, everyone that sees it thinks its flash!

And mine has that grimy nostalgia of misspent youth in a dingy back room!

Your avatar... I have an image of William Shatner lecturing me in my head now.

I myself would really like to gut my old PC and make my awesome Astro City cabinet into the mother of all Mame boxes. I'd want something that booted DIRECTLY into MAME though -- seeing a Windows 2000 desktop on the monitor would destroy the illusion. ;)

The only problem is the monitor is currently switched to medium res, so swapping it back and forth to play my Model 2 games is going to be der uber pain in the assen.

The bump/plug/piracy/selling shit shame of Boyo.
This is my new favourite thread and you Boyo, are the star!
*tips hat*
:lol

I guess it's easier doing this than an actual MAME cabinet?

It's just odd, because that's not like the Xbox controller setup. How do you, for instance, switch games in any of the console emulators? They pretty much all require you to click the right thumbstick to go back to the emulator menu.

I'm just wondering, as it doesn't seem very practical.
