Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

Well I had 2300 Wii points. Gave in to get Star Soldier R. Now I dunno whether I should just snag Lost Winds now and wait for Dr. Mario RX, or just get Dr. Mario RX when it his this Monday, and get Lost Winds later...

Damn...decisions.

Defend Your Castle tidbit. I was looking at the credits today and noticed SMB3W4. I wondered if this was a person's online handle or a weird reference to Super Mario Bros. 3 World 4. It seems to be the latter. Putting SMB3W4 into Google I get very few results, but most of them are about this YouTube video. It's an easter egg where things are giant, as in SMB3 world 4. Anyone know how to make this happen?

Localization has nothing to do with it. :(

Hopefully it's available in a few hours!

Not surprising when GS gave LostWinds a 5.5.

Speaking of Toki Tori, I have 4 levels left, if anybody actually managed to beat them, hints please :(

Levels are
Bubble Barrage Hard 1, 2, 5 and 6.

Seriously, holy shit. Best.
Yes!

Everyone should buy it. Best value for money I have had since a long time.

I recently beat the normal levels and just began to proceed through hard. The first world hard levels were rather easy, but I feel the difficulty ramping up pretty well now (in the sewers atm). I'll check the ones you mentioned out later.

Btw, I thought it was a neat idea
that it was revealed TT is searching for the eggs not to free his friends but to make the biggest omelette in the world
. Kind of a cruel joke but I liked it.

So, do we know what we're getting on WiiWare today? Please tell me it's Dr. Mario so I don't have to freak out this week too..

LostWinds crashed yesterday when I way playing... had to shut down and restart my Wii. I also went ahead and downloaded Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and played a bit, it looks pretty interesting...

World 3, level 10 (normal levels). How are you supposed to do that? I always have the two snail like creatures at the bottom of the level with just 1 vacuum.. And trapping one of them with bridges before he falls leaves me with not enough bridges.

actually to be fair critter roundup is supposed to be a unique and enjoyable puzzle game. Not going to say one is better over the other being as I haven't played CC($10 feels a bit steep in this case), but it definitely interests me enough that I've considered it a few times.

And I hate to beat a dead horse, but some of what would get me to pull the trigger a little quicker on these WiiWare games is the space issue. Now with WiiWare in full effect and with more Wii games including their own channels.. Right now on my Wii I basically have Mario Kart Channel, WiiFit channel, my initial wiiware purchases EXCEPT for Pop which I deleted for the WiiFit channel, and like a few NES, TG-16 and Genny games.

Well, at the moment it still works since most wiiware games are single player. So once you're done I basically just delete them and get my space back. Lost winds is not a game I'd ever replay.

For the Aussie Launch I got all the titles besides Star Soldier R.

Some impressions.

Lost Winds is beautiful, the concept is creative and intriguing, although I have decided to save the game for a future drought to complete. Three Hours is short, and will be perfect for a cold wintry day when i am warm inside.

My Life As A King is exactly the type of game I like. Part strategy, part RPG, its a fantastic addition to WiiWare and has my full support (downloaded all the extra stuff besides the costumes) I will say that the king controls a little bit too loosely for my liking, he could have felt a bit heavier. I can see this title being addictive as hell the more I get into it and the more I try to micromanage.

TV Show King, what a great family game, simple to use and quite fun. The questions are harder in some cases then I expected, but it makes a great simple and immersing title to play with friends and family with drinks for fun.

Dr Mario, A game, that along with Tetris when it hits WiiWare that will not leave my Wii's dashboard, need I say more.

Toki Tori, Wow, what a surprise this game was, it is absolutely fantastic. The puzzles are clever, the design and execution of the title from the interface to the character is flawless. It looks great and is loads of fun and fantastic value.

-----

So besides all that, the Wii is full, I purchased a 2gig SD Card for $30
(would Nintendo adding a 2g or 4g capacity drive from the beginning really have cost much more)
and have downloaded all the unused VC games I have to it, took a fair while, but doesn't seem to take as long to put the game back onto the Wii. I kind of wish that, even if they don't come up with another storage solution, they can at least speed that time up, and perhaps make it so the Wii Menu can continue to display the games channel image from the SD card. I could handle a up to 2 minute load time, at least it would be a bit more streamlined.

Anyways, only two more Star Spirits to finish Paper Mario 64, and then I can free up another 300 blocks for Fridays WiiWare onslaught.

Guess I gotta post it here too:

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND TWO VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

May 26, 2008

This week's Wii-kly Update pretty much covers the full spectrum. Maybe you'll want to blast away with an arsenal of old-school weapons. But then again, three-day weekends are a good time to relax. So maybe you'll take a wild road trip or settle in for some table tennis. And if you overdo it, we have a physician standing by.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare™

Dr. Mario® Online Rx (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): The doctor is in! Mario™ takes a break from his adventuring ways and once again dons his stethoscope for a new generation of germ-battling mayhem. In addition to the classic mode of using vitamins to exterminate viruses, you'll find two battle modes and an online multiplayer mode where you can hone your skills against players from around the world. Feel like challenging a friend who doesn't have Dr. Mario Online Rx? Then the WiiWare-exclusive Friend Battle Demo is just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you'd like some help taking on those nasty viruses? Try out Virus Buster, where four players can simultaneously move capsules simply by pointing at them with a Wii Remote™ controller. Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy.

Family Table Tennis (Aksys Games, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): It's time for some good old family fun, and what's more fun than table tennis? Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy. There are four table tennis-tastic stages where it doesn't matter if you're an indoors or outdoors table-tennis player. Pick your poison from a gymnasium, a forest park, a beach or even an amusement park. Choose from Single or Versus mode, or select a minigame to play. In Versus mode, you and a friend can play against each other to see who is the better table-tennis player. And if Single and Versus modes aren't enough, select between three minigames, which include Target Table Tennis, Thrilling Table Tennis and Matching Table Tennis. The appealing cell-shaded graphics and endearing music, on top of the super-fun game play, will have you and your family playing from morning till night. Get your paddles ready.

Virtual Console™

City Connection™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, Tobacco Reference, 500 Wii Points): Based on the arcade hit, a young man born in California sets out to tour famous sites and cities around the world. As he drives the highways surrounding these locations, the road is painted white as proof of his visit. Only once all sections of the road have been painted will he move on to the next location in his world tour. Not surprisingly, the local police will chase the driver and do their best to stop him from completing his goal. In addition, cats roam the highways and spikes lie in wait for unsuspecting drivers. To combat these dangers, the driver's customized car can jump, fire cans of oil and collect balloons to warp to a new stage. It's the ultimate road trip.

Metal Slug (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen - Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1996 by SNK, Metal Slug is a side-scrolling military-action game. Players control Marco and Tarma, both members of the special-ops force Team Peregrine Falcon (commonly known as Team PF), and battle their way through stage after stage of intense action. The goal is to try to overthrow General Morden and win back the stolen weapon, the Metal Slug. Players must blast through waves of enemies and machines (while also jumping over any obstacles in the way) to advance through the stages. It's not as hopeless as it might sound, though—weapons such as heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers and flamethrowers, as well as the Metal Slug itself (which appears frequently in the game), will make the battle easier. Take on General Morden with a friend to lighten your load and ramp up the excitement even more.

Any idea what the EU will be getting this week? I really want to try Defend Your Castle, but i'll probably spend of the points of Star Soldier R or Toki Tori if it doesn't come this week.

Japan gets Pay-to-Play Picross this week. Hopefully the non-DLC content is high enough to make it worthwhile, and hopefully it gets localized.

Thanks :) Looks more promosing than I'd expect. And it's only 500 Points, hmm.. maybe I should keep an eye on this.

Dr. Mario is a must buy, Family ping Pong looks like it could be fun, Metal Slug is too big for the space I have left, plus I could probably find a copy of Metal Slug Anthology somewhere cheap....

Regardless of what is coming out you should get Toki Tori if you like puzzle-solving games. Fucking ace!

Nice week for both Wiiware and VC this week :D

Really wasn't expecting that Ping Pong game so soon! That's a nice surprise! Dr Mario is as good as mine and I'll probably pick up Metal Slug as well (Never played a MS game before!)

How's City Connection? Any good? Might pick up the Ping Pong game somewhere down the line but not right now.

Impressions of the table tennis game? How does it control?

Was looking forward to Toki Tori :( Why hasn't it been released (in NA) yet!

I just read this over at Yahoo! Brings up some interesting (albeit already addressed) concerns/points. And the writer obviously has never downloaded much from Wii Shop Channel. Still, this proves that something needs to happen -- and fast -- before Wii owners begin to feel worse about the service and dealing with storage problems...

Or played SMB NES. Orange Mario! He further doesn't understand that each coin represents 1% downloaded. Still, he's right about the storage problem.

Wiiware is probably one of the best things happened to gaming since the PS1. This will bring out so much innovation in not only downloadeble games but retail games as well. I'm sure we will see a retail version of Lostwinds, I could even see a retail version of MLAAK and other succesfull innovating games. Wiiware will be the place where the Wiimote is really used and pushed to its limits. I hope we will see some full fledged RPG's on the service someday as well.

"Having to enter the billing address every time"? Did he do something wrong? I most certainly do not have to do that.

It could be where companies put gameplay ideas to test without much risk.

Like I've said many times, WiiWare is the place where those that think there's so much more potential on the Wii than what's been shown so far are proven right.

Now we' know for certain that are publishers the ones downplaying the Wii.
