Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

I don't know about consensus, but I thought it was well worth 500 points. It definitely gets repetitive after a few plays, but even a single play through can take you hours, as each round goes longer than the one before it.
Some people hated it, I thought it was ok and worth the $5. Hop-in hop-out co-op is the best feature. Honestly if you watch a video you know what the game is, it doesn't deviate in gameplay at all.

I bought Magnetica today and I love it. The main mode was okay, but then I discovered the challenge mode and discovered nirvana. The controls are pretty easy, rarely will the controller hiccup and the ball will get fired in a direction you didnt like, but I really do recommend it if you like puzzle games.

The embargo is up on Strong Bad ... but no sites have it posted? :/

See below, thanks to Shiggy!

Our Australian friends put up a review:

Well actually, it’s a pretty standard adventure game, but it still has some charm that fans of Homestar Runner, and newcomers, will enjoy.

The worlds are colourful and vibrant, the characters look amazing and express emotion as you would expect them to, and the strong and fluid framerate makes it something really worthy of the WiiWare service. It's almost exactly the same as watching the cartoon itself on the internet, albeit much more interactive.

So, how does Homestar Ruiner actually play? The easiest way to explain it is as a point-and-click adventure title, with options to change the dialogue with characters in the world as the player sees fit. Pointing the Wii Remote at an area and pressing a button will move Strong Bad to that area.

Naturally it is important to compliment a character if Strong Bad needs something from them, but it's pretty fun to just choose the negative responses to have a laugh, as the game definitely delivers in the humour department.

However, sometimes players may find themselves wandering around the same areas looking for something different to advance the game. Sometimes it can really mess up the pacing of the game and make it seems like the game is a long one when in fact it isn't. The second and more technical side of the problems with Homestar Ruiner are that it takes up in excess of 300 blocks, which is more than My Life As A King, the previous record holder for WiiWare titles.

Graphics 8
Gameplay 8
Sound 8
Value 7
Tilt 9

Whats Tilt?

Tilt is like Fun Factor/Difficulty :/

More info...
We're ditching it with our new site and actually calling it that. So the higher it is the more fun we had with it - lower and it was less enjoyable no matter how the graphics and sound are etc.

Is there any comprehensive listing or chart of the blocks needed for each game? One can always look up every single game and find out, but a nice regularly updated resource-at-a-glance might be preferable.

I actually like the old name - it is not only descriptive, but evocative of pinball machines - but I can see why it might be more reasonable to rename it to avoid confusion.

Can't wait for My Aquarium. Anyone get it yet? How is it?

Going to get it for my other wii (the one that's NOT in the same room with a real aquarium), will let you know. Sounds fun and with some decent features & unlockables though. I guess you have to like aquariums to like this.

Only played it for like 15 minutes (That's pretty much all you can play it for every time you start it up anyway) but it seems pretty cool. Lots of customization for the aquarium, and the fish look extremely nice for a WiiWare game (Better than Endless Ocean's!).

Thanks. How many points does the game cost BTW?

oh, fuck, the aquarium.. *abandons work, runs to wii*

.. caramba, wrong region.

Just a quick update about the aquarium game.. It's good!

Graphically it's above par, colors are vibrant and faithful to the depicted fishes, animations are very, very good. Better than many Wii retail games. If I have to complain about something, there's lots of jaggies on some of the objects (not on fishes though).

There's a nice variety of fishes and jelly fishes (no frogs, newts or snails so far.. bah!), I think you're looking at 50 species, most of them have to be unlocked.

You can have up to 6 fishtanks each with a nice amount of decorations / backgrounds. You have an indicator that lets you see how much stuff you can still fit in (you can't setup a fishmonger's shop) which is nice.

No custom sound support, the score is made of many classical music pieces. Actually the only genre represented is classical music (I guess it's for licensing reasons). Very easy on the ears.

You can send fishtanks to friends through wiiconnect, play with the fishes (much like tapping on the aquarium), feed them with several distinct foods as not all fishes eat the same food.

If you have the weather channel installed, the current weather will be used for the lighting of your aquarium.

There's a fish database but it's not very informative.

If you like fishes and/or aquariums, it's a steal for 500 points. Otherwise it can be nice for people with kids, or people that need to relax.

You seem to imply that the current de Blob isn't being made by the original creators... Is that true?

As for the game, looks like a fun concept, even if it looks like a flash game...

It was originally done by a team of students in the Netherlands for university. Their product is free and for the PC. THQ bought the rights to the concept and GREATLY expanded it for the retail game.

Sharpen your weapons: “Swords & Soldiers” is coming!

Ronimo Games announces their studio and the first competitive strategy game for Wii Ware: Swords & Soldiers.

UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS – August 15, 2008 – The developers of the original version of “de Blob” announce their new game studio Ronimo Games and their first title: Swords & Soldiers.

Ronimo Games is founded by seven developers in Utrecht, the Netherlands. As students the team was responsible for the original pc game “de Blob”. Being an innovative and fun game, “de Blob” became popular on the internet and was eventually picked up by THQ. The publisher bought the IP and will soon release the new version of “de Blob” for Nintendo Wii.

Fabian Akker, one of the co-founders: “de Blob was the eye opener for us, that we can make cool games and function as a good team. The game definitely gave us the opportunity to start our own company”.

The team is developing a new game for Wii Ware: Swords & Soldiers. Swords & Soldiers is a sidescrolling real time strategy game, in which three distinct factions battle for the powers of the gods. The game will feature a single player campaign and a competitive splitscreen multiplayer mode as well as several other game modes. Three screenshots are included with this press release.
Akker: “We always dreamed of designing an RTS and when Wii Ware came out we immediately figured that this was our chance.”

Swords & Soldiers will be the first competitive strategy game on Wii Ware and is scheduled for European, Australian and American release in Q4 2008.

About “de Blob”

Huh? It's being developed for WiiWare only... right? (I looked at the PR and I didn't see PC mentioned anywhere...)

Pretty much, they expanded not only on the production values but also on the gameplay.

The original "de Blob" was pretty much a fun one hour time waster or so.

Ah, thank you. I assumed the developers of the freeware PC game (which I had played a loooong time ago, even before de Blob Wii was announced) and those of the Wii game were the same. The games are so different that I thought they had decided to leave the PC game free for anyone to play.

I agree that de Blob Wii is a lot more appealing than de Blob PC, but I like the character from the PC version better. He looks so stupid :D.

So I was about to complain about how we haven't heard anything about World of Goo, and then I thought "Hey... GC is going right now... maybe I should check 2D Boy's site". And what do you know? They have news on it.

I’m (2D Kyle) going to be at Leipzig next week demoing World of Goo, trying to be the best booth babe I can be. Will any other indie devs be around? Come say hi!

Here’s what’s happening with World of Goo right now. (we should list stuff like this more frequently…)

Translations into 5 languages (english, spanish, french, italian, german) is 91% done. I hope one day we’ll be able to do Japanese too…
Cut-scenes: finishing up the very last end-of-game sequence, and the credits movie
OCD: We’re putting in “OCD Flags” for each level, “Obsessive Completion Distinction”, received if you complete a level under under extremely difficult criteria (ie. extremely high ball count, very fast, etc)
Playtesting: we’re having friends and family play through the whole game, on camera, so we can tune level difficulty, find out if objectives are unclear, confusing, etc. Thanks to the Flashbang guys for kicking this off!

Watching people on camera? Reminds me of Bungie's testing of Halo 3's campaign and all of those videos on wii.com of people playing.

Wiiware World published Ghostfire's press release that Helix is coming out next Monday in NA:

Press Release said:
Austin, TX (August 21st 2008) – Ghostfire Games™ announced today that Helix™, a music rhythm game, will be released this coming Monday August 25th on the WiiWare™ service for the Wii™ console.

Ed Roman, CEO of Ghostfire Games, had the following to say: “We’re extremely excited to release Helix™ to the general public. Its one of the most innovative music rhythm games ever designed. You use the Wii Remote™ controllers to do over 30 upper body moves while listening to fast-paced music. You do all this while the backgrounds (and the Wii Remote™ controllers) pulse to the beat.”

“Helix is not only fun, it’s a great workout. You can really burn some calories playing this game. You tend to lose yourself playing the game and forget that you’re even getting a workout, because the gameplay is compelling.”

“We listened to thousands of songs and narrowed it down to the 26 you find in this game. These 26 tracks are amazing and come from independent musicians that you won’t find elsewhere. It’s the type of music you want to hear over and over again because it’s so good. We’ve included over 26 songs to play, so the replay value is absolutely incredible for 1000 Wii Points™.”

For screenshots and videos of the game, see www.ghostfiregames.com

There are videos (including a long developer's video) on their website, yet I don't know what to think about the game. It is certainly ambitious (two wiimotes!) with a lot of content, yet I am not sure how successful it will be - especially since eurodance/electronica/techno and the like are not that popular in America - I can see the game being more successful in Europe, though.

Is anybody here interested in the game?

I'm tired of waiting for platforming games/adventure games from Nintendo. Why can't they make a 2D Zelda for WiiWare, or even in 8-bit?

Maybe if MM9 is a success they will? A 2D remake of Zelda II would be nice.

World of Goo got delayed and priced for Europe : Q1 2009, for 39.99€ (retail exclusively).
Sigh...At this price there better be some freaking awesome additional content, or I don't think I'll be getting it full price, especially considering that it's probably going to cost at most half that in the America...
Anyway, more details :

- Euro publisher is RTL Games
- Final retail price: 39,99€
- delayed to Q1 2009 for Europe
- NA to see WiiWare release this year
- new chapter added: The Moon
- each chapter has a unique theme (fanboyism, marketing, other tongue-in-cheek themes)
- 50+ levels.
- Online leaderboards: your stats are represented by a cloud on the Tower of Goo.
- Info shown: country with a flag, score, position, height
- one of the devs is provides voices for the game
- no Wiimote speaker use, dev team doesn’t like it
- rumble supported
- TV advertisements being discussed (most likely for retail version)
- Nintendo has been “wonderful” and “Very honest”
- 4 player co-op remains intact

Agreed. I think Wiiware will become one big playground for Nintendo.
It seems kind of odd that we were saying this before it launched and STILL nothing has been announced/released besides Pokemon Ranch and Dr. Mario. Where are the 2D games, Nintendo?

Oh, and I am definitely getting Alien Crush, Space Invaders Get Even, and World of Good. Perhaps Bomberman as well.
