Bungie is laying off 220 employees (~17% of its workforce)

Seems sensible to re-focus on 2 big projects. Looks like they attempted to stave this off as best as they could.
And seems like Sony doesn't want to lose talent hence the employee transfering scheme and reshuffling.

It is also obvious that Bungie fumbled the dream-like freedom and relaxed KPIs from Sony and this is all on them, in all honesty. Current descision sounds like the best compromise possible, for Bungie at least.

I'm still not sure what to think of this acquisition at the end of the day.

Honestly it's been a train wreck

I'd preferred Jimbo had put that money towards… Remedy.

I think the studio would've folded outright without the purchase. I think a full integration with SIE is inevitable. The sooner the better so boobs like Pete Parsons can be shown the fucking door.

Man, live service blows. Can we just please go back to the good ol' days of Bungie making incredible single player games that can also be played in co-op with a multiplayer component?

Together with the ones moving into SIE, thats like more than a quarter of the company gone.

Jim Ryan is an idiot. The only good thing the guy did for Sony was not buying into the gamepass craze like 4years ago and realizing it doesnt make sense/it's not profitable. Thats it, the rest like gaas focus (Concord lol, or Deviation game) and Bungie are disasters.

While it is sad to see people lose their jobs, cant say I'm not pleased that GAAS is suffering.

More people to add to the dead ass job market.

Hopefully they find something soon, cause it's rough out there.

220 people have just lost their jobs. Now is not the time for cringe console warring. Be better.

On an unrelated note, fuck Xbox.
lmao where was this sentiment when the other lay-offs were happening across the industry.

lol and "fuck xbox"? - sony's as equally as shitty as company as the next one.

Sucks for everyone affected, but people need to realize this is also a result of an industry (tech), that exploded during the pandemic. Lay-offs like this were always expected when things started to stabilize. Hope everyone finds a way out, but this shouldn't be surprising.

Its only natural in this industry. Games have lifecycle and lifecycles have to end. And destiny knew Great highs. Its time to move on. And you cant stay healthy and keep all of your programmers when you dont have the game to support. Maybe when marathon is a succes, they Will need people again.

Expansion sold great i think, but the player retention is lower than ever due to the new seasons being being exactly the same shit as before but repackaged.

Still decent ish numbers but they are in a worse position now than at any time in the franchise imo. The main story is done, can't see anything topping TFS and they are still bleeding players.

I think people as just about done with Destiny. I know I am.

Have not heard this arguments when MS was letting people go.

Reading these I always half-feel like american companies are kindergartens and not places of business. Like, what the hell are "breakout sessions" ?

When I got laid off (first and last time in my life, just after Covid started) I just got invited to HR office, got told company decided to save money and by the rule "last in, first out" let some people, including me, go.
I shrugged, was pissed for a day and got another job. Business is business.

Neil Druckmann must be laughing like Joakim Phoenix right now. This was long overdue.
Considering the lack of a new Naughty Dog game since 2020 and the new, more strict oversight from the Japanese mothership I don't think Druckmann has room to laugh until his studio ships a new game.

Bungie is a mess, this stronger integration into Sony is needed. PlayStation takeover to fix.

That the acquisition deal let them stay autonomous was crazy.

I think the only way to increase retention at this point is to move on from 2 and make a new entry. Player retention is tough when the seasonal model is fatigued AND players have nothing to chase. The new loot is pretty good, but players already have every great piece of loot they could need.

I suspect some of this will be positions that were likely redundant as they merge more with Sony. Support positions, testers, admin, etc. not that those folks are not important. Just I suspect that they merged the ones to cover the work that was needed (like finance folks) and the others were let go sadly.

I hope they can get on the straight and narrow again. The Final Shape has been great. Loads of content and fun stuff.

I think you're right, the games just too bloated at this point and most of the best weapons, or preferred weapons, are old ones i use on a consistent bases. The new ones are good too, but i still fall back on old ones.

I think the only weapons in the past year that have found a way into my primary rotation are the rocket sidearm from last year and the new healing auto rifle. I don't need anymore fusion rifles, cause I already have like 12 bonkers ones. Same with rockets and machine guns and stuff.

Absolutely I've been a player since the D1 Alpha, but I'm just about done with the game now. Had a great time over the years though. Time for a big reset and a big engine upgrade, game is starting to show its age.

Rare to see a studio just shit on their own work like Bungie with Lightfall.
New sony studio for a new Bungie ip. Thats some hype for ps6 gen.

It's almost impossible to tell the difference between layoffs because the company failed and layoffs to appease shareholders.

It's like there's practically no information at all anyone could ever use to make an informed take.

We'll just have to assume all companies are equally bad and exactly alike. There's literally no other option

I was clamoring for a new entry back in 2020 when they announced they had to cut a lot of content out. That never should have been an option on the table IMO.

Urgh, fuck Bungie and fuck Sony. Hopefully the affected people land back on their feet quickly. Losing a job sucks, and this industry is so shitty that it keeps it happening

Hope all those who were affected land on their feet, as I've said this before I'll say it again it's very tough out there to find jobs especially in the tech sector.

Dude, it's only been four years since The Last Of Us Part II, you're really giving Druckmann shit for not having released an original singleplayer game since? If so, then 99% of AAA studios in the world should be put under the same level of scrutiny, as pretty much only Insomniac out of all teams that have released games in the last five years has been able to come up with a new title or more by now - and that's largely been by having nowhere near the levels of attention to detail and polish of an original Naughty Dog game.

I played through the entirety of TFS with Breakneck, Recluse and Play of the Game lol.

The fact that Naughty Dog's multiplayer title was advised BY BUNGIE to not move forward is just something i'll never forget.

Imagine saying no to your premium studio that has created Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharter and TLOU, literally the mascots of all your generations and taking the opinion of Bungie. I bet their monetization wasn't even that bad...it simply wasn't as predatory as Destiny...which since then has been failing.

That said...sounds like the CEO is not in a good place:

Not the CEO going private on X right after showing off his brand new cars to the people working for him.

Holy shit...imagine being like this.
