Burning data DVDs

Running off of Custom Firmware
So, I've been burning CDs for years, but my new computer has a DVD ROM burner, and I never really figured out how to use it. I use Win XP to burn CDs (right click a folder or files, send to D: ), but that option doesn't show up for my E: drive (DVD Burner). So, I was wondering:

1.) Should I be using specialized software for burning CDs

and

2.) What do I need to do to burn DVDs?

If there's software out there that'll allow me to do both, even better! Thanks!

Oh poo. Do you think I honestly use the OS Image and applications that Dell ships off computers with? The very first thing I did was reformat and customize my rig's software environment! That's why I was wondering what's considered the greatest app for burning CDs and DVDS. :)

Thank you. That name sounds familiar. Might just have been what my Dell shipped with originally. (I really don't trust Dell, however.) I'll take a look at it now. :)

Yeah, Nero pretty much takes care of anything you want to do burning-wise. I have like 7 different burning programs, but Nero gets 90% of my time.

You could just as easily use Alcohol 120%, RecordNow Max, Discjuggler or some other program and be happy with it, though. Shop around.

Yes Nero is pretty much all you'll need.

Edit: You can download a trial version of Nero 6 Reloaded here . Scroll down and select Package 1. It has more than you sound like you need, so you're good. When you're done installing, just open "Nero Start Smart".

Thanks ghost. I had just started that download before you edited. :)

Is the free trial cripple-ware?

Edit - Does Nero also include tools for ripping music from CDs? In particular, I'd like something decent and recent that can convert music into VBR Lame mp3s. I now use CDex 1.5.1, but this version is like 3 years old...

No prob.

I think the trial is actually fully featured but time limited (30 days I think).

Edit: And to answer your question, yes you can rip cds. From Start Smart, there is a "Convert Audio Cds to Audio Files" option under the music category. There's also a bunch more stuff you can do, so try to read about the program here.

You've been a great help. Thank you. :)

Cool, a few days ago my import of Ys III - The Oath in Felghana arrived, and since then I've been running my Win XP Pro environment on a Japanese regional setting. Amusingly, the Nero installation displayed mostly in Japanese! Coolio!

Edit - Not cool. ALL of Nero is displaying in Japanese now. Ugh.

:lol I think you can change language settings from inside the program. File --> Preferences --> Language. Not sure it will help in your case, though.

That is, if you can navigate through japaneese menus. :p

Hahahah. I can't read Japanese, but I started clicking random icons until I found the settings page that allowed me to change Nero to english, globally. *whew!*

I was warned that changing my regional settings could impact certain international applications. Hahahah.

If you want to drag and drop file to a DVD like you do with you cds open My computer > right click properties > click the recoding tap and cjeck enable cd recording on this drive. Otherwise Nero as previous posts have suggested is an excelent program.

Nothing wrong with Nero, but the versions i've got from previous drives won't work with any other brand of drive, which left me needed a free DVD burning solution. i ended up with CDBurner XP Pro 3, the obnoxiously-named application that burns CDs and DVDs... for free. Works quite well for my uses.
