Bust-a-Move DS--did anyone here pick it up?

Gamerankings only has three reviews up that range between 7 and 8. Still, I'm thinking this might be the game to take with me on my Christmas vacation. Opinions?

It's worth it.

In fact, if you go to Toys R Us to pick it up, you can get Nanostray for only $10 more with it (they're doing a 2 for $30 on select games, and since Bust a Move is technically $19.99 anyway, it's a steal to pick up the Nano).

hmm..good deal.

I was wondering about this game as well. I don't care for the rubberband 'innovation' where you flick the ball with the touch screen. All I want is classic Bust a Move, no exploding bubbles, no indestructable bubbles, no touch screen control scheme. Anyone that has it, can you play Classic (read no funny bubble nonsense) mode with d-pad/non-touch screen controls? I know Classic mode is in, and I think you can do normal controls, but I'd like confirmation the game delivers on the fundamentals. Oh, and is there online play?

I believe "Puzzle Bobble DS" and "Bust-A-Move DS" are actually entirely different games. BAM having the sligshot and PB being the traditional control method... sort of weird that there's 2 different versions of essentially the same game for different regions.

I had no idea this was out either... If anyone has played it I, like others in this thread, would like to see some impressions. Mainly just wanna make sure the game didnt get fucked up and how the rubberband system works. Would like to pick this up on the cheap if it came out decently.

Jarrod was right they are seperate games

Bust A Move DS is by Majesco and features the slingshot control method...

IGN say the new control is cool, but the presentation is a little weak.

IGN said:
Majesco's game captures the classic flavor of the Taito design, and the addition of the cool touch-screen control actually advances the series further with mechanics that speed up the action, making things fun and a tad more frantic. The game's surrounding presentation's a little on the weak side, but the cart's actual gameplay, both single and multiplayer, is totally rock solid.

They also confirm 5 player local wireless, with just one card.

Puzzle Bobble DS is the Taito version ... I believe its only out in Japan at the moment.

In the Bust-a-Move review, they reference whats good/better about Puzzle Bobble DS:

IGN said:
The Japanese version released just a few months prior, seems to have the tighter presentation, and it even had a bunch more features including the ability create and trade several custom puzzle designs.

IGN says that you can choose the classic control too. But they like the slingshot and say it speeds up the game. Has less Modes and stuff than the japanese Version tho.

I didn't even know it was out. Looking at the two (Bust a Move and Puzzle Bobble), I think I'll wait and hope for a North American release of Puzzle Bobble.

Well, it wasn't easy, but I scored a copy of this at 10:00 last night at Toys R Us. (TRU is the only place I know of that has it for $20--everybody else, at least online, is charging $30, and they don't have it on shelves anyway). Is it worth $30? I'm not sure. Is it worth $20? Definitely.

There's a choice between the slingshot control and classic control scheme (you can use the D-pad or the L and R buttons--the graphic is still a slingshot, however, not the classic aiming device). However, the slingshot control is so far and away superior to the controls of any prior version of Bust-A-Move that the button controls are pretty much unneccessary, except as a sop to purists. Most importantly, there's no more need to rock back and forth on the D-pad to fine tune your shot--it's totally instinctive now.

There's a puzzle mode that has 250 puzzles (five stages x five levels per stage x ten puzzles per level), with an unlockable "dark world" that has 250 more: I don't know if those are mirror images of the normal puzzles or what. There's an endless mode that's basically like Snood (yes, I know Snood came later than Bust-a-Move). There's multiplayer, but I haven't tried it.

The presentation stinks. The only way I know of to see a high score list is to let the game idle at the start screen, and it doesn't keep track of all the stats I'd like--just the time to beat levels in puzzle mode, and a single best score in Endless Mode.

So, yeah, it's worth $20, but good luck finding it.

is this version with the 'rubber band' aiming system? if so, does it work well?

Yes, I can confirm that I'm lovin the rubberband controls. It's bettter/easier than I thought they were going to be.

O, and this game has 5 player 1 cart multiplayer.

thanks.

it sounds great i think i'll pick it up.

If I might bring this back from the dead for a moment, I'd like to ask anybody who has this: is there a way to play classic control Endless mode on the US version?

The SNES version of Puzzle Bobble was always my favorite, because I loved the endless mode. Up until the DS version, I don't think a following version ever came out that included Endless. I had planned to get the Japanese version instead of the Majesco version, but then this thread says that the US vesion also has Endless mode. However, I'm not sure if you can play it with the classic control set-up, or just the rubber band thing.

Basically, if I don't care about the rubber band control, and want the game 80% for Endless, and 20% for some occasional multi-player, which version would be better to pick up?

Just got the game, quite awesome.

The version comic via 505 IS the US version, not the Japanese, according to those images. You can also turn off the slingshot mode and just use the d-pad and buttons. Buttons are also ENTIRELY customizable, too.

The only thing I can't figure out is how the SAVING works. I mean, when does it save? When I complete a set of puzzles from puzzle mode? Because it didn't seem to save my best times before. Can you select specific puzzles after beating them?

Is Endless Mode in the game?

Ive had this game for a while, its quite fun, i love bust a move games. And if I recall it does have an endless mode.. I havent played it in a few weeks. cant recall.

There are 3 modes basically, "Puzzle", which is basically "Get rid of everything on the screen, taking out the 'mines'", "Endless", your basic Bust a Move endless [Which you can turn off a lot of stuff, like Rainbow, Star and Metal bubbles, turn off Chaining, and choose how many bubble you colours you want [6-8 colours], and "CPU Vs", which is the Multiplayer mode versus CPU players.

No story mode at all, which is what the whole "lack of presentation" is about.

The music is actually really nice, too. Sounds very ambient, like some great Kirby tracks :)

Well then, I'll just have to go out and pick this up for myself tomorrow. Thanks for that. As long as it has Endless Mode, and I can choose between old and new control style, I could care less about the lack of a story mode or whatnot.

Okay, a warning for anybody thinking about picking up this game... even when you switch the control to classic control, it DOES NOT look or play like that screen near the top listed under Puzzle Bobble DS. So for anybody (like me) who thought maybe turning the rubber band control off would make the game more like the Japanese version, that is absolutely not the case.

I switched the control to standard, went into Endless mode, and expected to see the "one screen the game / one screen the stats" style. Instead, it still has the rubber band method of gameplay, you just don't use the stylus for it. So that means that when playing endless, your pointer and bubble and just below the top of the bottom screen, and everything you are aiming at is on the top screen. Wow... IT SUCKS. (At least to me.)

So, I'm now out $20, and am now back to looking at picking up the import version.

I bought a copy at Fry's for Demi. He proceeded to pimp the game like there was tomorrow, yet he was only willing to pay $18 for it. :/
