I didn't realize there was such ire for not listing prices. When I don't list a price it's because market values are all over the place for certain kinds of items, and because I'm open to so many different kinds of game or partial game partial payment trades that it's easier to work something out with the individual. 95% of the time someone contacts me about a game I find a way to get them the game for around what they hoped to pay for it. That also helpfully accounts to a degree for people wanting to negotiate. Maybe it's just because I really like negotiating (as a seller or buyer) that this hasn't been an issue for me as far as I know, though now I'm wondering how many potential buyers haven't reached out for this reason. FWIW, I always have (gladly!) sold every item below the lowest sold or listed price on any online retailer.

I know for sure that if you pay with a credit or debit card on file you will be charged a fee even for F&F. Paying with your paypal balance should be free.

The best way to find out market value for a product is to list a price. If you get 10 PM's in 5 minutes with offers above your asking, your list price is low. If you get 0 PM's despite you reposting it 10 times, then your list price is too high.

I appreciate the idea, thank you. The issue in my experience with listing market rate is, often the market ranges for the items I sell (usually Nintendo games) are way all over the place, or it's like a semi-rare game not sold often. So if one eBay listing was for $10 and most are for $30 and some on Amazon are $25 plus tax and some are complete and some not, it's just more complicated to work out a price and if I add various parameters about how I arrived at the price it ends up making the listing confusing. If I list a reasonable range, people will sometimes feel they're getting a bad deal if I don't sell it below the lowest listed price. But, I will take your advice gladly and try utilizing the pricing method you suggested next time. Thanks again.

Honestly I've never had any real issue with this method except now maybe seeing more people would be interested in an item and not PM me, so I'm hoping with your method I can sell things a bit more quickly at least since theoretically it would mean a faster sale with more interested parties contacting me. Generally the only items I've had trouble with here are getting WTBs fulfilled, not WTS sold unless it was a very undesirable item (but sales being made more quickly is always welcome). With those WTBs it's usually just nobody here has it for sale. That's where GTZ comes in handy to be honest.

I tend to ignore posts/items without a price because to me it doesn't read as "oh hey an opportunity to negotiate," but instead I interpret it as "this person wants some ridiculous amount and I'm not even going to bother." On rare occasions I do reach out though, but 99% of the time it's to ask them how much they are looking to get, not to make an offer.

Also, just because someone posts a price doesn't meant you can't negotiate. Sometimes someone has a price that's more than I'm willing to pay, but I at least have a baseline of what they are looking to get and I counter-offer appropriately, and usually we work something out.

I figured not listing a price would just make someone see the item and offer what they felt was a fair price, especially since as I mentioned I often end up doing trades and I always want to see people's available lists if they're up for considering a trade (another reason I like GTZ). Anyway, as I said to AJ above I will say here as well, I really appreciate the advice and I will try it out with my next sale item.

99% of the time I don't contact want to buy posts that don't have a price either, even if I am actively trying to sell said item. about the only time I do contact a WTB post is when the item in question is of so little value to me that I just give it to them for free so I don't have to keep track of it anymore.

I personally would love it if everyone listed at least base prices for buying and selling, that being said I am also personally against requiring it. The percent of sellers/buyers that don't list prices isn't so high that it is troublesome to just skip those posts. And in general I don't feel like forcing buyers or sellers to list prices really helps the community overall. I mean obviously those people still get business even with people skipping the posts otherwise they would list prices, and if they didn't get business ideally they would eventually start listing prices on their own. meanwhile if we require prices it will just be another thing that clogs up this thread with people complaining about them not following rules, and we already have way to many rule violations. and quite frankly seeing more of the posts about them (even if warranted most of the time) would be more annoying than skipping the posts without prices.

But in general the reason I skip is because I don't like doing back and forth via PMs. Anyone that has done business with me knows that I very quickly respond, and if I can't be quick I typically explain when the next window I can respond is as I hate having transactions in limbo. I've even sent steam codes plenty of times just knowing they are interested before recieving payment as the community here is good about being honest. that being said I do not expect the same from others, it's just my own personal goal to try to be as fast as possible with stuff.

Either way if we are going to continue seriously discussing stuff about the structure of this thread I would prefer if we got permission to open up another thread so we could discuss openly about stuff (directing people to that thread for a while perhaps by a thread title change and taking our time to discuss, maybe even weeks), before bringing the end result of that discussion back here to be voted on. As for people that just want to come here to buy and sell things this extended discussion is becoming highly annoying in this thread. But this last bit is just my random thought on how to discuss these things, as I have way more to be said than I have been saying, as I haven't been responding to a lot of things I want to in this thread as I didn't want to clog it up more. But I wanted to touch on this subject because this response shouldn't actively cause a fight like some of my other recent thoughts could potentially do.

I don't think most people would. The few times I have paid over asking price it was after we agreed to sell it and I just threw in extra money because they were below market price by enough that I wanted to give them extra. Heck I have PMed people before with "I will buy that for X but before I do you should know that is worth X+$20" ect. I really am a terrible buyer/seller at times as I often talk myself out of buying something or selling something by doing stuff like that and telling people that another seller is selling it for cheaper and you should talk to them before buying from me

For what it's worth, I'm well aware that some people would like a price requirement added to the OP. However, every time the issue has come up, there have been an equal amount of people say that they don't want to have the rule.

While I do have an opinion on the matter, I try to stay as neutral as possible when it comes to stuff like this. If a majority of users asks that the rule be added, then that's exactly what I will do. If not, the rules will stay as they are.

Reading the responses, I'd probably be against such a rule now. It's fine if the B/S/T is more like craigslist than eBay.

Especially with WTB, I think people generally know what an item is worth. They just don't list the wtb price because they don't want to pay market price. I've seen posters who do "wtb market rate minus $X" and that's great. Everyone wins and doesn't waste their time.

I just prefer speed and efficiency in negotiations. I've always considered every post with a price negotiable. But with listed prices, I just have a better idea of what the poster thinks an item is worth and I can respond accordingly. If they want $1500 for a preordered iPhone, I'm not wasting my time. If they just put "pm me for price," I'll avoid them because I know they're looking to rip someone off. But in the case they aren't, that's a missed sale for them and a missed buy for me. Everyone loses.
