Buying Switch Lite x2 for kids RIGHT NOW (read the damn OP before telling me to buy Switch 2)

So I will be selling my PS5 since I CBA to turn it on, especially with Steam Deck around. That should get me approx. 300€. I also have my ancient PSP-2000 I can probably sell for 50-70€ /w games.

Here's the deal - for those moments where parents are absolutely exhausted and ready to give iPad or make them kids watch TV - why not videogames? I have a 4.5 and 6.5 years old, and I already know from experience buying a single console will be a nightmare - "play for 10 minutes and switch" does not work on kids at this age (tried it with original Switch but I absolutely hate the form factor it had).

I will not be getting Switch 2, at least not for 2-3 years, I have little interest in Nintendo games and I have way more than I can play on my Steam Deck.

So I was thinking - why not get them 2x Switch Lite for 120-130€ a piece? Yes, I need probably to rebuy some games twice for each of their consoles but that will be a few euros max. They are at an age when they don't need the very top hardware (and if they dare to tell me they do...)

Did someone ran through such a scenario already? How did it go?

Buy switch 2, you and the kids can sniff stuff with it

Also. Just FYI, your kids will come to you within 1 to 2 months if you are lucky and tell you daddy look Mario moves on his own.

Good luck sending them to Nintendo and wait a month or 2 to get it back after they fix the drift … for you to repeat the process again in few months after.

You should buy 4x lite. This way you have 2 spare when you send 2 for fixing

Because if you aren't hooking it up to a TV (which no one should be), anything more than a Lite is a waste of money.
Screen in the OLED is miles ahead and it’s easier to fix joyfons in case of drift… but for kids and for the $ Lite isn’t a bad choice.

IMO, I would get one regular Switch and one Lite. That way kids can play Just Dance or Mario Kart on TV while having two Switches still.

That’s what I did and it worked out.

Also, selling PSP for that low just seems a shame. I would keep it, but different strokes for different folks and all that.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I’m just thinking they might start to want the new Mario Kart etc. etc. that may be exclusive to the next system once Nintendo starts advertising it all. But maybe that’s a non-issue.

Why not buy two pre owned Standard Switch Consoles instead?
Because I don't plan to hook it to the TV and the OG Switch form factor is absolutely terrible. Kids at this age will enjoy smaller console.

This.

No.

Can't this be fixed rather easily?

Not hooking it up to the TV. As for PSP - I didn't touch it for 10 years, I don't care for things I don't use, which is why I'm selling the PS5 as well. I understand why people may think differently - my mother is a hoarder that refuses to sell any shit she bought 30-40 years ago. She probably has a few million EUR in the stuff she has.

It's a non-issue, chance are when they will be old enough to care about the newest hardware they will probably ask for the newest iPhone before they ask for a game console.

Nintendo’s the best family system. For me it was Gamecube and GBA SP/DS, but the kids loved them.
We have Family Share with our Switches and it works well.

Ive gone through this phase. They graduated out of it and preferred to play on the tv screen or liked the option to move between the two. Ultimately it was sort of a dumb gap of maybe a year or 2 before my kids got regular Switches and PS4s (now PS5s)

Personally, I would of skipped this step and just went straight for 2 normal switches on my end if i could go back. If that isnt an option like it sounds to be then really there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the Lite. Everyone's use or vision varies.

Not with the Switch specifically but getting a couple of cheap handhelds for kids has been a thing for ages. Only downside I can foresee is the joycons are crap

I'll disagree and say at that age they shouldn't be having that much screen time that sharing a device should be an issue and honestly it's a great lesson to learn now. My sis and I shared stuff as kids a long time ago that led to some really good habits.

The way your post reads is a little confusing (I don't mean like I don't understand what you are saying). You say you are getting these 2 Switch Lites for the kids, but the reason you are giving in justification applies to you, e.g. the reason you cited for not getting a Switch 2 was that you have little interest in Nintendo games. Aren't you getting these for the kids? I think they will be fine if they get Switch Lites or the Switch 2.

Do it. Forget these other people talking about oled lol for your young kids they wouldn't even care or notice. You can prob find a preowned switch lite for like 100 nowadays.

What I meant to say is precisely what you pointed out - these are for my kids, so I don't want to spend and I don't think they care about latest and greatest like some people are recommending with Switch 2 or Switch OLED. Kids don't care, I don't plan to use these at all. That's why I think they will be fine with Lites even so close to Switch 2 release.

Wait and buy Switch 2
See what I meant?

Depends what games your kids play. Are they not interested in anything with split screen multiplayer?

If not then yes, two Lites makes sense.

Last summer I was going to buy Switch Lite to my 10 years boy (his first console), but before buying we had the conversation:

- Hey, what game do you want? Zelda? Mario?
- GTA 5.
- It's not available on Switch.
- Ok, then Roblox?
- It's not available either.
- Call of Duty?
- No.
- Fortnite?
- Yeah... The worst version though...

I was confused and asked myself: isn't Series S a much better choice for him?
I bought Series S.

I think its a great idea, and having 2 of them will keep conflicts from happening (hell I had to buy 2 switch OLED's to keep my wife from taking mine!).

A few things I'll point out to make sure you are aware:

1. With the Switch 2 coming out, we'll probably see a $25 or more price drop on the OG and Switch lite. I doubt money is a big issue here, but just pointing it out.
2. The Switch lights analog sticks break VERY easy, and aren't the easiest things to repair.
3. The Switch lights LCD screen sucks, a lot, but maybe your kids don't care about that given their age. Just pointing it out so you aren't surprised by how bad of quality it is.
4. Get the kids Animal Crossing. They'll be hooked for months.

Their friends will have Roblox online and they won’t. They’ll want to play on the TV (sitting further away reduces their chances of myopia too).

Switch 2 might have an exclusive or a gimmick they or their friends notice.

The social element is soo important for kids. Playing in handheld by themselves isn’t optimal in my view but at the same time, if you’re comfortable with it, it will be fine.

Go with your gut

You can game share on Switch OP. Works just like Xbox and PS.
Wait, what? Is there a list of games I can do this with? So like - I buy one copy and they both can play?

The screen quality is of no importance, yesterday they were glued to my PSP which is 3.5" and absolutely ancient.

Its not ideal and I don't think will work well for your children.

I wouldn't buy Lites. The normal switch is more expensive but you can by pads/other joycons (mine never drifted but the internet claims it happens to all) and it allows them to play it on the tv which they are going to want to do if it's supposed to last them a couple of years.

I have 4 switches in house for this exact reason.
Now my son starts playing on my PS5 so i probably have to buy a second one

I bought more Switches for family then for myself lol (but that is generally the case with each generation)

My cousins in Haiti, Canada and France love that shit lol
Why not buy two pre owned Standard Switch Consoles instead?
not going to lie, my cousins in France wanted one and I dead just bought the cheapest used one that was working, most of them where the standard launch ones. Work perfectly fine and at the time I bought them they were cheaper used then those Switch Lites so....I went with what made sense.

I don’t think kids should have screens.
I agree, this is for those rare moments when we are really too exhausted from work and taking care of the small one that we really can't spend time with them. It's either that, iPad or leaving them fighting (which is hilarious, but still).

I'm not against the whole non-screen thing for kids, but gaming imho is a bit difference.

To be clear, the issue folks have with the screen time that kids have is more so based on the internet, social media and lots of outside influences etc

Gaming? So long as its offline, I don't see it being a big issue and the right games can build great critical thinking.

As to why I research everything someone claims on NeoGaF vs just mindlessly believing anything, some of ya'll believed you could unlock Goku in Super Smash Brother Melee and we can tell lol

It isn’t anyone thing. It is children exposed to screens. The research is very damming. I’ve experienced nephews addicted to screens and gaming.

Thankfully their parents recently got rid of all screens and it has improved the relationship quite a bit. I have another that gets a screen only while eating but has a melt down any time he doesn’t get it while at the table.

Kids get hooked on these things quickly.

I can't believe we got people in here talking about oled, fps and switch 2 for pretty much a 5 and 7 year old. If you have old tablets laying around that works too. There's alot of games avail they can start with that are simple and also educational at the same time and then they can graduate to something like roblox afterwards.

This is what I did. Even games like Genshin Impact were great for my son he loved it. He's 7 now and plays on the PS5 mostly. If I'm using the PS5 he settles for the Ipad.

oohhh ok, I understand you better. You mean in general, that makes sense. I get it for phones, tablets etc as I don't have kids, but when I do I don't want them to be always on their phones, so maybe I'll do what them Silicon Valley parents be doing and have no screen times or something like this.

My kids love gaming on switch, and it gets them off youtube. The earlier they start the earlier will they discover the magic of Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and later on wont enjoy crap like Roblox and Fortnite nearly as much.

Agreed. I will try to delay giving them smartphones as much as possible, even if it causes tensions with their friends. I remeber the time without social media and I find very little utility to what was before and way more negatives.

I am planning to get my kid a anbernic/miyoo emulator device. Load it up with all the SNES/genesis/GBA classics. No interner, no mtx. Just good old games.
