Buying the losing console

Who did they think I was shilling for?
Have you ever bet on the wrong horse? I certainly have, multiple times.

I had a Neo Geo Pocket black and white, and later the colour one. I sold my PS1 to get it lol.

I had a Dreamcast, and refused to buy Sony because I believed Sony killed the DC (spoiler: Sega killed the DC)

I had an original Xbox and 360 (these were not bad consoles. They sold less, but the games were great)

What about you guys?

Several times,

Even though it lost, Master system was still a winner to me and a great console. So many amazing games.

Jumping on the Atari ST before getting an Amiga. What was I thinking.

Going all in on the 32X. The best versions of NBA Jam, WWF Arcade, MK, Primal Rage for a long period of time. I got my monies worth and enjoyment. I was more than happy with it Star Wars, Vf and some other titles. Jaguar, let's not talk about that one.

N64 I played and bought more on that than PS1. But eventuallty I just bought everything.

But I did really like cartridges over CD-ROMS for the longest time.

I bought an N64, still was great to own even though third party support was bad. Had an xbox one from launch till 2015, that one was just a waste of money though.

I had great times with my Megadrive, N64, OG Xbox, 360, and PS3 despite them losing the sales war.

Certainly. Specifically the Sony portables.

The games are the factor though. I gravitate towards the genre of the games on the console.

While there are objectively great games on the DS and 3DS, it never clicked for me aside from a few exceptions like MH and a handful of SRPG games as well as some sequels that jumped from Sony to Nintendo like Valkyrie Profile.

I bought the xbox one ... coming from the xbox 360 seemed like a sure thing ... welp.. good thing I sold as soon as I smelled the downfall... learned my lesson there. No series X for me.

Aside from that .. the Vita ? ...

I also bought the Switch and barely used it ... just outgrew nintendo and didnt realized... one kids game is nice once and a while, a whole console based on that dosent worth it anymore for me .. my kids loves it though

Edit: ah yes.. the WiiU almost forgot about this useless crap

I've done that a couple of times. Got the n64, dreamcast, og Xbox, Xbox one and series s. The first three were still worth it, the latter two were a waste of money.

Edit: Also got the GameCube, another "failed" console, but also worth it.

I never cared about the sales. Every console i ever bought had more games people with a real life could play so it doesn't matter. The winning or losing thing is for console warriors.

We had a CD-i. I think that's the only time you can really tell it was the wrong horse.

Also have a Vita, which technically speaking flopped. I had a lot of fun with it, though. Especially WipeOut.

I have a Wii u. Mario maker almost made it worth, but not quite. I have a series S. Forza horizon 5 made it worth.

I remember friends of mine laughing how bad my gameboy color looked and how much better the neogeopocket color looked because one of them owned one.. little did they know about this game called pokemon silver and gold that suddenly everybody was playing in the school.

I ragesold my wiiu when nintendo told me the next gen console would launch with the same zelda as the wii u would get.

Sega Saturn

Sony were a newcomer I never thought would be successful and N64 was delayed until March 97 in the UK.

I made a thread about Sega’s 1996 games and thought I’d made the right choice.

E3 1997 changed things though, the lineup was threadbare with barely anything from third parties, meanwhile PlayStation was getting big titles like Final Fantasy 7 and Tomb Raider 2, while N64 was showing off Ocarina.

Saturn just had Panzer Dragoon Saga and little else in terms of great games coming from that point. And then Bernie “poop mouth” Stoler pooped out of his mouth and said “Saturn isn’t our future”.

Still, one of my fave consoles of all time and 1996 was a great year to be a Sega fan in the UK.

Vita. Still pains me to this day. Not because the product was bad, it was amazing.
It even got some very good games (mostly ports) but it should have been so much more.

I guess I could say the PS3 as well, but in the end, that one kinda won didn't it.

Loved my 3DO, Saturn, and Dreamcast.

Also, the 360 may have come in 3rd unit wise, but it was a hell of a console!

If you're content with the platform that you bought, does it really matter?

In the end, that's all that matters and the rest is just background noise.

I think we have to differentiate between "losing consoles" (N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, etc...) and total disaster consoles like Jaguar, Amiga CD32...when I was playing Metroid Prime, Resident Evil Remake, Star Wars Rogue Leader, FZero GX, etc...on my GameCube I didn't care much about what I was selling.

I have bought every console, except the NeoGeo and 3DO. I actually prefer the games on those systems and still play on my Dreamcast, N64, GameCube, and especially my Series X. I buy the games where I can play them, but I prefer the controllers for these consoles which is why I still use them.

I had the N64, Wii U, Gamecube, and Xbox One. Honestly, I only regret the Xbone. The Wii U was fantastic and despite buying a X360 later, I never regretted it. The Xbox One was a disaster and I fully moved to Sony/Nintendo after that.

True. The Gamecube had great games. I envied the GC as an Xbox owner. At the time I could only afford one console and I was blown away by JSRF and DoA3. I bought an Xbox in UK at full price and a month later MS discounted it and I got an extra controller and Halo for free. I was in love with Xbox but I was secretly envious of RE4 and Wind Waker.

Dreamcast and OG Xbox were my jam. I loved the Dreamcast and Xbox OG was kind of like Dreamcast 1.5 game wise.

I also appreciate Saturn’s library a lot more now days, especially if you include games that never came over to the West.

Hmm

Dreamcast had no competition for its first year.

PS3 wasn’t the losing console that generation, in terms of sales 360 was (though there wasn’t much between them).
Ps3 was being beaten year over year during the majority of the gen. It wasn't until at the very end and overlap with the next gen that it pull out in front .

Including 360 is an insult to the GOAT.

I buy whatever console has the games I want to play on it, and I end up purchasing every console ever pretty much to date besides the PS5.

Units sold is such a pointless metric if you’re having fun or not, we’ll all be consoleless in another 20 years regardless anyway.

You guys are right, I should not have included the 360. The 360 got most of the third party games the PS3 had, and some amazing exclusives.

It was only toward the very end of the generation when I felt that the games were somehow drying up. PS3 was getting Persona 5 and other JRPGs that the 360 didn't get, which sucked.

Actually, it wasn’t. It sold better than 360 throughout its life, year-over-year it sold more. That’s the very reason it caught up in the first place.

Yes, it was slow going those first few years (06/07), but after that, it was regularly catching up despite the year deficit (among other things) working against it.

Buy the console that has the games you want to play. You play the games, not the fucking console, after all.

I bought the fucking Wii U because I wanted to play Xenoblade X, Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World. Never regretted it. I bought a fucking Vita because of P4 Golden, Gravity Rush and Wipeout 2048.
