Bye Bye Big Team Battle (Halo 2 matchmaking update)

Bungie.net:

"Brian and Jeremiah (Ninja on Fire) are working hard to prepare the new matchmaking playlist updates. Some old deadwood is being burned, and fresh saplings planted in the fertile forest of Matchmaking. Brian explains:

Last week we caused quite a ruckus at the mention of two playlists being removed in our next matchmaking update. In fact, one could even say that in the past week the number of people posting their sentiments about Big Team Battle actually exceeded the number of people who play it. We're still in the middle of the test pass and it's quite possible that some things will change before the final release but to alleviate some concerns I'd like to provide some more information on what we're planning.

The good news is that we will have an unranked 16 player playlist that will feature a variety of objective game types with a little more weight given to Team Slayer. Guests will be allowed and all sorts of large scale shenanigans will ensue. This isn't "Big Team Slayer" but it will be close and should offer some good times for people looking for large scale mayhem. Hopefully the ability to bring in guests will invigorate the larger scale playlist and create some more interest and make it easier to get into games. The existing Big Team Battle will be morphing into its new unranked twin brother.

To fill the gap of larger team-based rank playlists, we're adding a new 6 vs. 6 Team Battle. This is the spiritual successor to Big Team Battle and will be fairly similar in offerings albeit with a few less players (the games will start with either 5v5 or 6v6). We're doing this because ultimately we feel that the 16 player ranked experience is hit-or-miss for most people with the majority of players experiencing an unreliable gameplay session. The old BTB wasn't all that popular (and continued to decline) and based on feedback it was mostly due to "laggy" games and longer wait times to accumulate enough players to start along with the general sense of chaos that many people didn't care for. 6v6 is considered the "sweet spot" by the Bungie team for many of our maps and it will be a bit easier to digest for people who have spotty connections. This new twelve person variety will start with a fresh ranking for everyone and will hopefully prove to be a more enjoyable experience for the masses.

We realize that there will be people out there who are upset by this change. We're sorry to upset the diehard BTB fanatics but ultimately you do have the same ability to jump into 16 player games and now you've got a more refined 12 player option as well.

I'll leave a few of the other details for next week's update - keep in mind we're still a few weeks out on the new playlist itself. As always, please stop by the OptiMatch forum on Bungie.net and vote in our polls and share your opinions as we work on plans for future updates! If you want something to ponder for the upcoming week, I give you the name of two of Ninja on Fire's new Gametypes that will appear in one of the new novelty playlists, "Brutality" and "Combo Training." People really play anything but Big Team Battle?

Im teh newb.

They mention this in the update, but I'll just reiterate that it is hard to get a good BTB game going. You'll either have too much lag for comfort, or you'll have an idiot. Usually you have both lag and idiots in spades.

Big team battle usually Features some boring ass mode like neutral bomb, where no one ever scores, the game lasts longer than 10 minutes, and to top it off the game is always laggy as fuck. Im happy to see the 6v6 option come into play.

I was a huge fan of BTB, it sucks big time that it's being removed.

How about adding something most people that I come across on live agree with...Big Team Slayer?

Did you read the paragraphs above?

Sounds like a good balance. I haven't played in quite some time, but BTB was always either total hit or miss; it's be a fantastic game, or it'd suck ass, usually the latter. This makes me wish I still had the game actually, sounds interesting.

Yes, I did. And like they said it's not Big Team Slayer. Also, having played none ranked games the amount of droppers just kills the fun in them, so no thanks.

Oh wow, I wish we had 6vs6 a year ago. So many times I've gone in with 5 or 6 people in my party and then got stuck with 2 or 3 losers in BTB. Still, I've got a 20 or 21 level rank in BTB. Too bad that's going to disappear.

I know I'm in the minority, but BTB was the only playlist I played. So basically, Bungie is telling me to get the eff off of Halo 2 (or play some new unranked consolation). Alright, I'll stop playing. Need more time to get to this backlog of games anyway.

You know, there's not much difference in 6v6 and 8v8, except now you'll probably get a good game without lag much more often. I know I certainly hoped the screen would flash to "Configuring game" whenever it hit 12 people in the pregame lobby, but I might have been the only one.

It was my fav too :( I hate just plain old slayer games, they are for the simpletons. It was however taking a fair while to get BTB games going recently, so maybe 6 vs. 6 Team Battle will help in that regard.

What happens to clan games then? No more 8vs8 games there either?

Excellent, big team battle was one huge, laggy, disorganized, snorefest. Hopefully 6v6 will use more than the same 4/5 maps you were forced to have on big team battle.

Actually, what am I even saying, I donÂ’t even play this piece of crap anymore, and I never will until thereÂ’s regional matchmaking settings so I donÂ’t have to play on laggy non-european servers (which there never will be)

Put a f***ing server list!!!!!!!!

Sometimes is more fun to play with my brother in xlink just because the server list.

I just started to recently enjoy BTB over the past few months-- mostly because I've been playing with some really kickass people. There are some idiots here and there, true. And some games do get unreasonably laggy, yes... But it was still fun. :/

Oh well, 6v6 is coo'.

Seriously, the Big Team Battle playlist was a place where people went to team kill, act like idiots, and lag. I'm not sad to see it go. After about the first month of playing Halo 2 on Live, I didn't play Big Team Battle anyway.

I hope they add new maps to the playlist now that it's 6v6. Gemini I think would work well.

The problem with BTB was the maps IMO. Relic, Headlong, Terminal, and Zanzibar were great for BTB. But Coagulation, Containment, and Waterworks are a waste of time since no one ever scores on those three maps.

I'd rather they remove Head to Head (does anyone actually play that?) then BTB, but if this is done right it could be for the better.

I'm still loving Multi Team.
When we don't have to back out due to guests breaking up the teams it is intense and we do very well in that gametype. I love getting a triple kill and knowing I just wiped ouit a whole team.

I stopped playing BTB for the reasons listed: Too laggy and too long a start time.
6v6 sounds great to me.

I only played BTB. I enjoyed driving the enite team, who jumped on top of the warhog, down a pit. :(

Yeah, I just played BTB as well. That's fine what they're doing. I trust they know what they're doing. Sucks they are resetting the stats though.

I like BTB and I agree there are problems with it but its what I always wanted to be able to do in Halo multiplayer. after playing Halo for so long I was ready for some big matches and for me most of the time BTB works. there are games with terrible lag and all but I like the mayhem of it. the only time I really dont like it is when people try to blame a loss on their teammates. sometimes the other team is just better. cheating is cheating and I never found it to be that bad in BTB. I think some of you just have bad luck in matchmaking.

I have nothing to add to this other than, I spend about 80% of my games in BTB. I'll likely split it between it and the 6 v 6 now.

Yeah, thats one of the reasons I liked BTB is that you got cheated a lot less than other modes but I guess that could be because of less players. Either way gld to see its staying, but I daresay with 6vs6 it'll get even fewer numbers.

"Playlist work is continuing and we're almost finished with the test pass. Tweaks are being made as necessary but for the most part everything is coming together nicely. We are still targeting this release for early December.

This past week was rather exciting with the huge outpouring of support for Big Team Battle (which we've since reported as remaining mostly unchanged for this next update). However, we have been talking about the removal of other playlists and it seems like a good time to go ahead and get that out of the way. So here goes - in our next update, Head to Head and Major Clan Match are both being removed from Halo 2 Matchmaking. If you recall Frankie's "By the Numbers" story a few weeks ago, you'll remember that Head to Head and Major Clan were clearly the least played of all playlists. H2H averaged about 2% of all matchmaking activity and Major Clan was too low to even rank (less than 1%). We have a finite amount of playlists we can accommodate and the decision has been made to remove some of the dead weight. This is a process that will continue as the game matures and the online population begins to shrink and we will keep making these adjustments as necessary.

There will still be one Clan option available - Minor Clanmatch will remain but we're going to rename it to "Clanmatch" and we're increasing the player count to allow up to 5 per team. We will not be adding any new version of a 1 on 1 playlist. However, Ninja on Fire is working on two new "flavor" playlists which will hopefully be fun, unranked novelty playlists that will mix it up a bit for players. More on these next time but for now I'll leave you with this : "Team ActionSack"

In the meantime, please continue to stop by the Optimatch forum and share your opinions and suggestions for future updates."
