California is burning

It has been 4-5 days since we started getting lighting storms (without rain) that started fires in dry areas of California. The fires have not been contained and are now destroying cities and wildlife.

It is hard to breathe in the Bay Area with the four fires creating a perimeter of smoke surrounding it.

Yeah, this shit has gotten to be over the top ridiculous. I personally know dozens of people that have lost their homes over the last few years due to these fires. I've had to evacuate previously but seem to be ok for now. Dealing with this stuff every year has become exhausting

The air quality is atrocious. Even if I don’t need to evacuate, I have to put up with breathing ash. This thing is completely shattering my perception of the future in California. It’s not even about costs anymore, nature wants me out.

I'm fortunate in that where I'm located is likely going to be one of the last places to burn, so if it does come here, it's too late to run, the rest of the state is already cinders. But the air quality has taken a nosedive and there is ash everywhere.

It also makes it harder and more expensive to get homeowners insurance. I don't deal directly in that space, but I refer my financial planing clients to them, and its getting insane if you live somewhere that is prone to brushfires.

Yeah it's insane. I know someone in the North Bay that owns a small insurance company. He was telling me that he has about 60% less clients compared to 2010 but makes significantly more now due to the fires.

Oof. I was planning to move near Santa Cruz in the area that just got torched. I wasn’t even thinking of the insurance. :/

It looks like it is getting worse every year, but I want to believe it is also just a temporary struggle.

As I understand the issue, fires are expected to get worse over time due to forest mismanagement, and some of the more rural communities are in danger of becoming uninsurable. If that happens you basically can't sell your house for whatever the market rate would have been cause you won't get a loan from a bank without insurance.

Real class act.

Take it easy there killer, don’t pick up on sarcasm much huh. I was referring to the policies that everyone always say that are burning down California, now it’s burning for real, again. I’m obviously not talking about the regular people keep voting those same people in. No way, no sir I am not. Not one bit.

Be safe, stay cool.

Why did various places stop cleaning up all the dead underbrush or whatever it's called (the build of of fallen leaves, branches, etc.)? These fires have gotten much worse since that change in tact. It's not just California that made the change to forest maintenance either, now forest fires are way worse. Was there a logical reason to stop? Do any regions have plans to go back to that system, because the current way of doing things certainly doesn't seem to be working.

As I understand it they want what they think is a more natural ecosystem. I forget what they are called but there is an influential group of environmentalists in our government that basically think you shouldn't even go out into nature, that the farther people are away from it at all times the better. They basically think any kind of logging or use of the forest that happens is basically raping the earth. They want whatever they think is the most natural, and the most natural thing in their opinion is you touching or interacting with it as little as possible.
