"OMFG. This isn't Halo 2....6.8! C-!"
Yeah, after two bad reviews I wasn't so sure. But MOH: Rising Sun feels like a budget FPS made by a modder, and I've played through the PC COD too many times to play through it again, so I snagged Finest Hour at Fry's while it's on sale for $37 (along with PoP2).
Just as the PC COD was the spiritual continuation of the MOH series, the console one feels like the same thing. It keeps the squad presentation and scripted events of the PC version, and they put in some interaction with your squad where you can pick up health packs that can be saved and used later or used to heal members of your squad to keep them alive.
Sure, it's not a revolutionary FPS or Halo 2. It's a WWII FPS where you play as American, British, and Russian troops as you get to kill Nazis. THATS ALL A WWII FPS FAN REALLY WANTS IN THE GENRE. The game shares the epic scale from the PC original and easily features the most impressive score yet in a console WWII FPS.
One thing I really like about the game, which I haven't really seen in a FPS since Goldeneye, is the hit detection on shots. Now, it's not 100% as perfect as in Goldeneye but if I'm looking down the scope of my sniper rifle and I see a Geman taking cover with only his hand exposed, I can shoot his hand and get him to react to move slightly out of cover for a kill shot. That was one of my favorite things in Goldeneye (shooting the gun hand of a guard or a knee shot to stop someone from running towards you), and that's here in Finest Duty and actually makes it more fun to me.
Been playing through the single player (the console one starts with the Russian story), so I haven't had a chance to try the multi yet.
