Camelot Prepping New Title
Maker of Mario Power Tennis hints that it may have a new console game at this year's E3 show.
By Matt Casamassina

January 20, 2005 - In a recent interview with the French videogame publication Best4Gamers, Camelot Software Planning president Hiroyuki Takahashi hinted that the developer could show a new console title.

Takahashi was asked if Camelot was in the works with any DS software yet. "For the moment, we don't have any projects in development for DS as we are working intensely on the Game Boy Advance version of Mario Tennis," he said. "But we are not devoid of ideas for utilizing the touch screen on the DS."

For several years rumors have persisted that Camelot is in development with a GameCube version of Golden Sun, its hit Game Boy Advance role-playing game. Quizzed on the subject, Takashi remained vague, but did not deny the possibility.

"We love RPGs a lot and we profoundly adore the universe we created with the Golden Sun series on GBA," he replied when asked if the rumors were true. "At the moment, though, it is impossible for us to share information on this subject with you and so our answer is neither yes nor no. It is true that we have projects underway, and if we are far enough along with our work, maybe we will present some things before the next consoles."

When the French games site asked if Camelot might show said software at the next E3, which kicks off this May in Los Angeles, Takahashi laughed and said: "Yes. I expect that we will be able to show some new things at E3."

It remains uncertain at this point whether or not Takahashi is referring to the possible console version of Golden Sun, which was thought cancelled a long time ago, or a brand new project. The game could also appear on Nintendo's Revolution platform, slated to debut at the E3 show this May, as opposed to GameCube. Regardless, though, this is good news for Camelot fans who have followed the developers projects over the years.

Excellent. With their last game announced years ago getting closer to release, it's about time they spill the beans.

By denying the NDS question, they've as much as admitted that it won't be another of their core Mario Sports titles (Golf or Tennis.)

Golden Sun?

Golden Sun GC or revolution plz. Judging by his response, I'd say they're definitely working on one.

I wonder what takes Camelot so long to make the handheld versions of their sports games... They're usually better than the console versions, but they seem to take an inordinate amount of time to develop.

I suspected it was a marketing reason, designed so people would buy both the console & handheld one, but these comments suggest otherwise!

I would love it if Camelot could find a way to service Nintendo's sports needs AND put out a few original titles. I somehow don't see that coming, and all this is likely to do is put "Nintendo/Camelot - RPG" entries on every fucking ListWarz Back to the Future console edition Revolution list.

p.s. I love the WhatWasThatgame.com banner. Too bad I can't click through the ad to the site. Mmmm hmmm!!!

Amen to neo's words.

Don't know about the rest, but I thought the simplicity in Golden Sun was a great change from some of the other complex RPGs out lately.

The battle system was a bastard though. Who in their right mind doesn't do auto-selecting if an enemy you selected is dead :(

I thought that added a nice bit of strategy to the battles. You couldn't get through fights by just hitting attack, attack, attack--the game made you pay attention to how damaged each enemy was, and assign characters to each target in a way that wouldn't waste any of their attacks. I liked it, personally.

I think Shining anything is out of the question, if DS gets a SF3 port/remake it'll be coming from Amusement Vision. I'd say a Golden Sun sequel for DS or GC is pretty likely though.
