Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a digital camera. Nothing too fancy, I'd prefer $150 or less so I can get a nice memory card and rechargable batteries for not too much over $200. Having a 1280x960 max resolution would be fine with me, I'm not looking to make posters or anything. Expensive cameras are funny anyway, I see these pocket-sized things with 8 megapixels and I wonder how the tiny little lens is supposed to take a sharp enough image to really utilize that sort of resolution.

Also while we're at it, if you're adamant about non-digital cameras you could share why. And I'm kind of wondering what the best disposable cameras are; I mostly see stuff from Fujifilm, Kodak and Polaroid but never know what's a good idea for fairly qualitiy pictures.

$7,999. Maybe a little over your budget.

1. Save $200 for the camera.

2. Don't worry about the price of flash memory. It's cheap and dropping all the time. You can get a 256MB card for $20 which is enough for at least 100 pictures on any digicam in the ~$200 range.

3. Take Matlock's advice.

With everyone going digital, you can get some amazing deals on some classic 35mm SLR cameras. I don't know a lot about photography, but what better way is there to learn? I got an awesome deal on an Olympus OM1, and Olympus OM2N on eBay, and I'm planning on using them for astrophotography because they have manual settings and a few other nifty features. So far I've just taken scenery photos with the OM1 out in the desert, and it works great.

Btw, is there a general way to get a good long-exposure photo during the day? I wanted to get a cool shot of the doorway to my little office with everyone who walks back and forth just outside all blurred but it was all white when I looked at it.

Can you set your camera to shutter priority (Tv) mode? If so, set it to that, 1/10 shutter, using a longer shutter to increase the blur effect. Keep in mind that you'll need to keep the camera steady with a slow shutter. Depending on how you're shooting, steady it on a table, some books, your knee, etc. You can also set a higher ISO at the tradeoff of adding more noise, but that's only if your shot's underexposed.

Well, that's what I did (maybe even a slower shutter time), and the picture came out really white.

IE, the only time I've been able to get the cool blurry effect is when there's only lamp light or something.

Is your ISO on auto? If it is, it should expose the shot properly. If it is on auto, i supposed you could set it the lowest ISO and see how the shot comes out. If your camera's got exposure compensation, you can knock it back a couple of steps.

Thanks guys, the Canon Powershot a510 looks like a good deal. Though, I might want something a little smaller and the a420 looks great for that. If I was loaded I'd probably get the Fuji E900 coming out soon.

Don't get a Sony digital camera in that range if you are concerned with pic quality. I had two Sony digicams before I started to use my parent's Canon A95 and there is just no comparison. My Sony cam is definitely smaller and probably cooler looking, but I the next cam I get will definitely be a Canon after using the A95.

Hey, cool. Thanks for the recommendations. Just bought a Canon Powershot A520 for $180 from Amazon. Better not suck, or I will be quite disappointed in GAF.
